How Erik Walden Duped Colts into Overpaying for His Services
By
Marques Eversoll
(Featured Columnist) on March 19, 2013

The early wave of NFL free agency never fails to deliver a couple head-scratching moves, and Erik Walden's four-year, $16 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts is certainly among the most puzzling.

Walden, 27, started 24 games for the Packers in the past two seasons. After signing with the Packers Oct. 31, 2010, Walden played a key role in punching Green Bay's ticket to the postseason. In their must-win Week 17 game matchup the Chicago Bears, Walden sacked Jay Cutler three times.

The Packers made the playoffs and went on to win Super Bowl XLV.

Walden entered the 2011 as the starting outside linebacker opposite Clay Matthews. He started 15 games, recorded three sacks and entered unrestricted free agency.

There wasn't much of a market for Walden on the free-agent front, so the Packers were able to bring him back on a one-year contract worth $700,000 with no guaranteed money, according to ESPN Wisconsin. And after another three-sack season in 2012, Walden received a pay raise of over $15 million from the Colts.

Did the Colts overpay for Walden?
Yes, $16 million for Walden is ridiculous. No, Walden will be worth it for the Colts. Submit Vote vote to see results

The terms of Walden's deal were jaw-dropping. Reggie Bush, who has accounted for 2,072 rushing yards, 78 catches and 15 touchdowns in the past two seasons, signed a similar four-year, $16 million contract March 13 with the Detroit Lions.

Appearing in 31 games dating back to 2011, Walden generated all of six sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble. But financially, Walden and Bush are on an equal level.

According to Pro Football Focus, Walden was the NFL's worst 3-4 outside linebacker during 2011 and 2012. He wasn't one of the worst; he was the worst.

In 2012, Walden's PFF season grade of minus-25.5 as a pass rusher ranked dead-last in the league, and in 2011, his minus-17.6 grade in run defense ranked 28th among 28 players at the position.

But which game yielded the best individual performance of Walden's five-year career? Week 5 of this past season against his new team, the Indianapolis Colts.

Walden's name doesn't stand out on the box score for that game, as he was responsible for just 2.5 tackles and two pass deflections. But looking deeper into his performance that day, it's easy to see how the Colts' coaching staff could have been impressed by No. 93 in white.

Outside linebackers in a 3-4 and defensive ends in a 4-3, right or wrong, are often judged by sacks. And while Walden failed to come up with a sack against Indianapolis, PFF credited him with three hurries and two hits on quarterback Andrew Luck.

After signing Walden, Colts general manager Ryan Grigson was effusive in his praise, per ESPN's Paul Kuharsky.

"We played against Walden," Grigson said. "We watched the film. We go through a process with all the pro scouts and then the coaches remember who they couldn’t block. It’s an entire process."

The Colts' front office and scouting department surely did their homework on Walden before offering him $16 million; they didn't offer him a four-year contract based solely on one game. But it's hard to find another logical reason in giving a mediocre-at-best player that kind of money.

Colts Free Agent Signings Raise Eyebrows Around NFL, Fail To Address Key Needs

The knock against general manager Ryan Grigson and owner Jim Irsay during this free agent spending spree is that they wasted valuable cap space on glorified back-ups.

The Indianapolis Colts entered the new league year with an estimated $41 million in cap space and looking to jump into the free agent market to improve their young, but flawed roster. Heading into the start of free agency, we targeted pass rusher as the No. 1 priority for a Colts team that was allowing its all-time sack leader, Dwight Freeney, to walk away. With pass rushers like Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, Connor Barwin, and Paul Kruger hitting the open market, it seemed likely that the Colts would use some of their cap space to find an adequate replacement for Freeney.

That's not what happened.

Instead, Colts general manager Ryan Grigson overpaid on decent, but generally marginal talents such as linebacker Erik Walden, defensive end Lawrence Sidbury, and defensive end Ricky Jean-Francois. The Sidbury and Walden signings were the ones that had more than a few people around the NFL raising their eyebrows. I spoke with one scout for an NFC North team, and he expressed surprise that Walden got the contract the Colts offered him.

I like the signing of Hasselbeck. It gives us a nice insurance policy, which we will hopefully never have to use, but nonetheless is nice to have. Also, Hasselbeck has a wealth of experience and knowledge that he'll be able to share with Luck, which will pay dividends for us.

Yep. The whole "experience and tutor" thing is ridiculously overblown hot air. In the modern NFL this just doesn't happen.

These guys aren't hanging around to tutor anybody. They are looking for money. And, the last thing Andrew Leaf wants to hear is the advice of some old man who was never that great in the first place - especially not after an entire season of everyone in corn country telling him how fabulous he is. Besides, do the Colts really need to pay a guy $8 million to tell Andrew Leaf that interceptions and fumbles are bad?

Years of having Peyton Manning and even Kerry Collins around didn't do shit for the development of Curtis Painter, did it?

Hasselbeck is just another expensive backup being paid starter money for the doddering 2013 Colts. Why these guys are blowing this kind of money on glorified (or actual) backups, as if it's a "dream team" and win now scenario is befuddling.

The Colts are not going to be very good this season.

WRONG.

More ignorant drivel from someone who knows nothing about football. Having a backup who understands the game and can assist with watching film and scouting defenses is huge. Hasselbeck will fill that role. The Colts will also be transitioning to a variation of the west coast offense this year. Hasselbeck is a veteran of the west coast system and will pass his vast knowledge on to Luck. His contributions will be invaluable.

Meanwhile, it's back to the basement of the NFL for the Redskins next year.

Blahblahblah...we hear this shit all the time. It's bullshit. They are just trying to be nice and give reporters something to work with. RG3 was actually saying the same stuff about REX FUCKING GROSSMAN. These guys aren't learning anything from these washups, and they aren't being asked to. Indy signed Hasslebeck because they think he's an upgrade to their current bench-warmer, and that's the ONLY reason. And par for the course in 2013, they overpaid for a guy who isn't gonna help the team.
Meanwhile, it's back to the basement of the NFL for the Redskins next year.

Levy, how long will you support the Redskins this year? Because last year you jumped ship around week 8, only to come back aboard after the Skins became the latest flavor of the month. How long until you start bashing the team again and stop watching? I'm guessing it will be around week 5 or 6, because I'd be surprised if the Skins win any games up to that point.

So a punter who has been on the same team with a guy he has probably never even met for literally 7 minutes has some kind of bold insight on how this will affect the development of his team's turnover prone QB?

Bottom line? He enjoys trolling too much...

After his little meltdown and threatening of legal action he realized he couldn't bully the mod into biting into his threats and chose to wear the sig..
In typical Greg fashion he immediately created his annual Poison Headlining Tour thread.. Not so much to try to take some attention away from his empty threats that he was leaving and never posting here again, but because he had no intention of leaving with his dignity and integrity in tact and fully planned to keep trolling every chance he gets with his asinine Colts cheer leading and Poison/Bert schtick....
Is this true?

Interesting theory.

I hate to Captain Kirk vs. Nomad you here...but you realize, that if I know nothing about football, than logic dictates that you must know even LESS.

After all, you ain't wearing those humiliating sigs till September because you know more about football than me, right?

Also, remember when you threatened to sue the mods, promised you were leaving for good, and melted down completely? Only to come crawling back within 6 hours with your tail between your legs, folding like a cheap card table and immediately posting the sig you swore NEVER to display?

That was funny.

So they gave big money to a washed up QB that makes Greg Oden look like The Man of Steel and a man who sucks at his primary job; sacking QB's. Naturally, Greg thinks this is a great idea.
