Abraham, Freeney and Reed were there the same day. Abraham was the one that was rumored to be signed before he left but that didn't happen either.

Urlacher no longer a Bear
Team and player could not reach an agreement.
Appears both sides were far off.
I blame the owner and the player.
Here we have a special case of a future HOF player that will probably get a statue near the football field who is at the end of his career, but obviously wants to remain a Bear.
Why not have the Owner and player work this contract out.
Leave the agents at home, leave the lawyers waiting in the lobby and get it done.
Originally Urlacher asked for 2 yrs/11M, that is crazy. No chance he will get a 2 yr deal.
Team countered with 1 yr/2M. Probably low, but c'mon, work that shit out and get back on the field for the sake of his legacy, the town, etc...

There's nothing even remotely special about this situation.Machado wrote: Here we have a special case of a future HOF player that will probably get a statue near the football field who is at the end of his career, but obviously wants to remain a Bear.
Emmit Smith. Art Monk. Jerry Rice. Joe Namath. Joe Montana. Johnny Unitas. Even Franco Fuckin' Harris (I bet you didn't know about this one). All great players who are identified with one team, but got cut or traded.
Happens all the fucking time. Players get old and expensive, their original teams want to move on. And it's about more than money....for a guy like Ulracher, to be told by his team that he's essentially worthless...well he won't want to hang around. The pride is too much. He'll end up taking the same shitty offer the Bears gave him to go fuck up his knees more and embarrass himself elsewhere for another season or two.
And then in two years he can sign one of those stupid "one day contracts" to retire a Bear, if he isn't still pissed off about it.

With the latest events, it's very possible Urlacher will dislike the entire organization and remove himself from the team/field for years or decades.
Which means the fans pay the ultimate price.
All of that could have been avoided by both parties messed up and haven't learned a damn thing from previous situations like his.

Re: NFL Thread, Bitches!!!!
The Bears did him a favor with that offer. Urlacher is washed up. They could have just said, "sorry man, we're moving on". Sonebody may take him in, but it wont be more than a one year deal for about the same money. He needs to swallow a little pride, understand its a business and stop talking shit. He'll never have to pay for a drink it a meal in Chicago again.

Re: NFL Thread, Bitches!!!!
He feels like the Bears insulted him. Well Brian, you asked for over 10 million FIRST. He's lucky they countered with the veteran minimum and incentives. His knees aren't even worth that. I hope he signs with the Vikings. It'd be nice to be the team running right over his ass twice a year for a change.Machado wrote:

Next to Bill George he's the best MLB they've had. Yes better than Butkus who never suited up for a playoff game and the intensely overated Singletary. He was that good and that fast for that long. He's done.
And the Bears compensated him very well for it. Now go away.
He's like the Liberace of bass & pot.

I don't think Reed ever made it to New England. No way was Belichick going to sign him for 3 years and $15M, no matter how much he worshiped Reed in his great days. Patriots just don't overpay. They went for Wilson -- better long-term move, may be a Rodney Harrison kind of impact guy -- maybe ....Facedown wrote:They did, sort of I guess.AliceManson wrote:I am surprised Belichick didn't make a run for him.Facedown wrote:Ed Reed signs with the Texans.

Not sure what the hang up is with Abraham and Freeney - though Abraham was for sure going to Patriots and Freeney to Broncos -- Dumervil debacle probably threw in a wrench in everyone's plans.

Re: NFL Thread, Bitches!!!!
Reed only got 5 mil of that guaranteed. It was a pretty cap friendly signing for the Texans. All things considered, as long as he can still deliver one decent year, it's a reasonable deal. Of course if he gets hurt or underperforms next season all bets are off.veritas wrote: I don't think Reed ever made it to New England. Re: NFL Thread, Bitches!!!!
I'm not criticizing the Texans' deal - I think Reed can still deliver one more good year or so. I think Belichick figured that getting Adrian Wilson for 3 years at $5M total was a better value than Reed at 1 year @ $5M. Can't say I disagree with that, although it would have been great to see Reed play with Belichick.bane wrote:Reed only got 5 mil of that guaranteed. Can't believe they haven't signed Sanders from Pittsburgh. He would only cost them a 3rd round pick.

Re: NFL Thread, Bitches!!!!
Agreed. The Patriots secondary is laughably bad, and I don't think they have done a ton to address it. Sure, signing Talib to a one-year deal was a good move, provided he stays healthy, but the other corners or either unproven or not very good, and Wilson is not really a Rodney Harrison caliber player at this point, I suspect.Facedown wrote:Yeah, you may be right. With such a flooded market of quality corners out there, I am pretty surprised at their lack of aggression in that particular area.

They still might, they are probably waiting to see what the Steelers' cap space will look like (even though it really won't change, the Steelers rarely sign any free agents), see what the Pats' looks like then scoop him up and really make the Steeler fans hate them even more.Facedown wrote:Yeah, you may be right. Re: NFL Thread, Bitches!!!!
Jesus, if the Flacco deal wasn't bad enough, bad meaning laughable, the Cowboys may have it beat as they have extended Tony Romo 6yrs/108mil.
$55 million in guarantees and a $25 million signing bonus.
Romo will earn $11.5 million this season, essentially giving him a seven-year contract worth $119.5 million.
The deal makes Romo the highest-paid player in franchise history and tops the $52 million in guarantees that Joe Flacco earned from the Baltimore Ravens as part of his six-year, $120.6 million pact.

Dallas already has cap problems, and they are doing the restructure thing which is only going to make it worse. They are going to be stuck with these players (who aren't getting any younger) and stuck in mediocrity for a long time.

Time will tell.sin wrote:Wow, it's going to be a slow but entertaining meltdown to watch in Dallas the next 7 years.
Cowboys have a lot to prove and the games are not played on paper.
I hope this is the season where the team turns things around for better.
I would rather have Romo versus a lot of starting NFL QB's. I would also rather than Romo than a rookie QB out of college.
QB's make the big bucks.
Flacco just go paid after winning a SB. Maybe Romo can justify the contract by winning a SB before the deal expires.

JJ has fucked this team up good and I love it, fuck the Cowboys.

Re: NFL Thread, Bitches!!!!
I don't have anything against the Cowboys, it's just that he is close to being at the same level of decline as Palmer, Hasselbeck and Vick. It's a tough situation for Dallas.
I think in a couple years or so they are going to find themselves continuously in the bottom 5 of the draft. They will end up with Romo as a very expensive backup QB no other team wants to pay that kind of money for.

I'm not 100% sure on this but couldn't the Cowboys in a few years just payoff what they still owe on the guaranteed money part of the contract and just move on.
I do know that in the NFL whatever guaranteed money that's in a players contract is the only for sure deal the player can count on.
