Tony Gwynn
Tony was the definition of class act. He remained loyal to the Padres when he could have chased more $$. I had met him numerous times during spring training and he was amazing with the fans year after year. Unlike the knuckleheads he played with or against Tony treated all with respect. This sucks big time. Gonna miss him

Re: Tony Gwynn
Best pure hitter of his generation and I agree a class act as well, I only wish his son was half as good since he plays for my fav team now, definitely sad shit, I loved listening to him talk baseball and the art of hitting.

Tony Gwynn in available data is the only person to hit over .300 ( .302 ) in two strike counts. The next closest is Wade Boggs at .262.

Yup - agreed on all the above. This one hurts. I'm not even remotely a Padres fan, but you can't help but have the utmost respect for class act like Gwynn.

Re: Tony Gwynn
will always remember him for his name rhyming with his teammate Marvell Wynne
Harry Caray would always goof on that too.
"Gwynn and Wynne", he would say

Tony was classy. You are right, he treated fans well.
I was about 22 and went to see the Padres play the Astros. I'm was talking to TG and Crimedog.
Benito Santiago walks out and a kid , around 13 , walks up to him and asks for his autograph.
BS says "Why would I sign something, your just gonna lose it".
The kid looks at him and says "You're an asshole".
TG , Crimedog and I bust out laughing. Santiago walks off with his tail between his legs. You could hear his teammates losing it.

Damn I forgot McGriff played for the Padres, that dude got around but I'll always remember him as a Blue Jay and a Brave, great story too. I was robbed of watching Gwynn play thanks to the 94' strike, Me and a couple friends were gonna go watch a phils/padre game while I was visiting Oceanside, fuck was I pissed.Mongo wrote:Bassmaster1984 wrote:Tony was the definition of class act.
