R.I.P. Phillip Hughes (Australian Cricketer)
Was hit by a ball during a game on Tuesday and has had his life support turned off today (Thursday)
Such a tragic loss

Awful thing to happen on such a routine delivery. I mean, I know facing a short pitched delivery is risky, but you'll see a lot of that in any game. Poor bastard.
Awful for the bowler too. Hard to imagine how he must feel, and how he'll ever fill about pitching it short again.

Absolutely devastating. I really feel for his family/friends and team mates, in particular Sean Abbott - can't even imagine what he is going through right now.
I must say that it disgusts me, however, that the media felt the need to wait outside the hospital to take pics of Phil Hughes' family/friends/ex-team mates etc when they had just heard the terrible news. Not needed at all.

Totally agree. how is there any newsworthiness to such an obvious reaction?life_of_agony wrote:Absolutely devastating. I really feel for his family/friends and team mates, in particular Sean Abbott - can't even imagine what he is going through right now.

There was also some picture of Sean Abbott looking distraught doing the rounds of Facebook with a "'Like' to show your support for Sean" caption. Nice sentiment, but...

R.I.P.
Always so shocking when sports (our escape from life) and life itself intersect like this. Hope his friends and family can find peace and not be treated like pieces of meat for too long.

New Zealand team seem very shaken up. Obviously don't want to be playing. Didn't celebrate any of their wickets in the field.

Such a shame...I'm unfamiliar with Cricket is the ball used as hard as the ball they use in baseball?

Re: R.I.P. Phillip Hughes (Australian Cricketer)
It's a two piece leather ball, a fraction smaller and a fraction heavier than a baseball, with a hardened polished finish (although this does soften as the day goes on).Mazerati wrote:Such a shame...I'm unfamiliar with Cricket is the ball used as hard as the ball they use in baseball?
For the faster bowlers one of the standard deliveries is a 'bouncer' where they aim to get the ball rising up to the batters chest/head area to cramp up their swing (and intimidate them). It's not completely uncommon for a guy to get hit in the head, but nobody at the top level had ever died in my lifetime.
Here's an example of one of the world's fastest bowlers doing it.

Had one of our all time great batting efforts too, with almost zero apparent enthusiasm. Quite surreal.Terrapin wrote:I saw that too, really strange game to watch.demolition23 wrote:New Zealand team seem very shaken up. Obviously don't want to be playing.
