Some decent goaltending would go a long way . Perhaps moving Ladd helps them land a goalie for the future?pieceofme wrote:5 years. Winnipeg did alright in this deal. Expecting Ladd to be dealt.Kid-Wicked wrote:long term in the peg?

Leaf fans always wondered which team would be stupid enough to take Dion Phaneuf off their hands. Now we know.

As a flames fan, I know losing Dion is addition by subtraction. He's a goof and a horseshit defenceman. Most overrated player in the NHL today.Gibsonite wrote:Leaf fans always wondered which team would be stupid enough to take Dion Phaneuf off their hands. Now we know.

Brilliant trade by Toronto. They get out from under that contract, retain no salary, receive a decent stay at home D-man in Cowan, and more importantly free up cap space to make a run at Stamkos in the off season.
Phaneuf will probably fare better in Ottawa, without a C and the spotlight of Toronto, and not having to play first pairing minutes. 7 million/year is a lot to pay for a second pairing D man though...

The Flames sat Bouma,Monahan and Gaudreau for the Leafs game for being late to practice!?!?! Thats some tough love there. Good on the Flames for not having separate rules for their star players.

I kind of hope they do sign him, because he will be overpaid, and hopefully it will cripple their rebuild!

Stamkos is saying the right things. But then all players and GMs do before a player is traded!Kid-Wicked wrote:anyone that thinks stamkos is leaving tampa for toronto is on crack.

The big issue for Tampa is that they have some other really good players coming up for a payraise. Hedman being the obvious one. And he seems more important to their success than Stamkos. For forwards, Kucherov has been arguably been their best forward the last two seasons. Then there is the rest of the triplets line.
And Stamkos in the playoffs has not impressed. Hence Yzerman has been reluctant to sign him to a monster contract.
So him wanting $10m might seem like the right price considering his goal scoring capabilities. But his overall play merits nowhere near that amount.

Re: The official NHL thread
if stevie y wants to trade him all he's getting from toronto are first round picks. they have nothing to offer from the roster.
i doubt stamkos wants to go from a second place team to last in the league.
he'll end up with the rangers.

Re: The official NHL thread
Bob MacKenzie said on Montreal radio yesterday that if Stamkos wants to go home he'll be able to do so. Leafs WILL make him an offer, perhaps a ridiculous one, if he goes to free agency.
BUT
He also said Stamkos may not want to lose for 2-3 years before winning again and Stanley Cup contenders are preparing to make substantive offers to him.
Tampa will for sure make a good effort too.

Re: The official NHL thread
A Toronto boy leading the Leafs to the Cup? They'd erect a fucking statue of him in front of city hall lol.
I think he knows that having the former Detroit guys in charge will lead to the Leafs being very good in about 3 years. The moves they've made so far have been a step in the right direction. Toronto has gone from a team with no prospects to one with at least a half-dozen,probably more, very promising players coming up through the system. Add some veteran leadership to the mix and it could all come together at the right time.
The formula worked in Detroit before and now its working well for Florida. Even in last place,I feel better about this team now than I have since the Gilmour years when they were one blown call away from the Cup.

Toews on pace for 57 points this season. Hopefully will shut people up saying he is the best player in the world. Never was, never will be. Very good player, but never the best player in the game.
Awaits for people to come back with intangibles, leadership, clutch etc.

They have a good prospect pool. Will probably improve when they trade Ladd this window.

Caps vs Stars sounds better.........But it's the Rangers year....
Does anyone else hate the fuck out of the new NHL.com website?
What clusterfucking eye sore. Jesus I almost hate going to that site and I don't pay enough attention to the NHL as it is.
Around this time each year is when I start catching up and watching more games and I'm stuck watching them on NHL.com with a pass key.
I need another outlet.

TSN isn't much better.
Florida going for it a bit by bringing in Hudler, Purcell and um Kindl. Just cost draft picks. And then they sign Dryden Hunt to offset losing a second round pick.
Chicago are really going crazy as well. But they are built for a longer run than the Panthers.
