Yeah that Von Erich episode was fantastic. All these years later and that one had stories I had never heard before. Unbelievable.

Here’s a sneak peek of the Benoit story it’s the first hour of the episode. It covers up to Eddie’s death. And just like the Von Erich show this covers stuff we’ve never heard before about how bad his death affected Chris. I won’t give any spoilers.

Watched the first hour just now on Benoit on Vice's You Tube and it's great, can't wait for the 2nd hour Tuesday. Just watched The Bruiser Brody episode from Season 1 again and it was fascinating to hear Abdullah The Butcher and Tony Atlas at odds on what actually happened after the fact. To watch this episode in high def was kind of brutal as these guys especially Abdullah have not aged very well. Spoke with both producers via DM on Twitter about getting them on Inappropriate Earl and they both said Abdullah was constantly grinding them for more money!

Stay safe out there everyone. You know it's a rough time when Dark Side Of The Ring cheers you up.

I watched the Aaron Hernandez mini series on Netflix (worth watching) & at the end they were showing that CTE may have been a factor.
Doesn't change the fact that the guy was a POS.

Seeing clips of guys getting smoked with chairs on tv on a weekly basis was really something. How in the hell did they think that was ever a good idea? Benoit morphed into his idol, Dynamite Kid full on.

Well, Orlando and the PC are being shut down, but thankfully the WrestleMania matches and several shows' worth of Raw, NXT, and Smackdown have already been taped in advance of this. Vince got lucky, I guess...

I guess they're somewhat similar but for one, we don't actually know why Hernandez did it. Maybe he had a motive and maybe there was a stupid beef with those people. More importantly Hernandez steered clear of harming his own family.

Been watching the Dark Side of the Ring series during the Covid hysteria. Good series, especially the ones dealing with the classic stars. The Vin Erich episode was really good.
I also recommend the Jim Cornettes show. I listen via you tube but sure it’s available other ways. Good discussions of old school wrestling stories

I really hope maybe for Season 3 Dark Side Of The Ring does one on racism in wrestling especially during the 80's and early 90's. I mean here is just a brief look at some of the African American Characters
Slick-jive talking pimp
Kamala-an out of control savage who was too dump to speak
JYD-dog collar around his neck barking like a dog
Akeem-a complete mocking of black people
Ko Ko B.Ware-WTF?
Tony Atlas-portrayed to be a total lunkhead, anyone remember when Flair called him boy?
and this is just off the top of my head!

i remember davey boy smith calling bad news allen a jungle bunny in calgary. dynamite called him a spook or a monkey. you could hear the crowd screaming nigger. in hindsight it's probably the most racist shit i've ever seen on tv. bad news was probably the most hated heal ever in stampede.

I mean I know in Kamala's book Andre The Giant was not portrayed very well as he supposedly called Bad News the N word and Kamala as well. Although Tony Atlas wasn't a character per say he was kind of portrayed as a black juice head to coin a phrase from The Jersey Shore of all places. Most of those guys with the exception of JYD are alive and I think it would make for a great episode and I forgot to include Abdullah The Butcher who seemed to like the character but he was essentially portraying a more sadistic version of Kamala! Even going to WCW it's not like they were any better as Norman Smiley and Booker T were always kind of the brunt of the joke and last but certainly not least how could I have left out Virgil who was basically playing a slave!!

No doubt this is all true yet many of the minority wrestlers were the top draws and were baby faces.
JYD was a giant in Houston wresting and the WWF. Possibly the most over talent the Houston area ever had.
Another very popular minority wrestler in the Houston territory was Mil Mascaras and Jose Lethario
Ernie Ladd was a hugely popular wrestler from the 60's through the 80's. He was both face and heel.
I remember Tony Atlas being billed as the black Superman. Of course Vince turned him into Saba Simba later.
Kamala also made it around the territories long before his WWF stint. Not sure how the character was created though.
Seems it only really became noticed once these characters hit the national stage via the WWF explosion of the 80's.

I’ve been watching some early Kamala pre WWF and man that guy was so nimble and agile for a guy his size. I think the moment or soon thereafter he got to WWF they kind of turned him into a cartoonish character almost like a black Akeem WTF?!!! Also did a deep dive into Abdullah The Butcher and almost not agile it was kind of fun to see a younger and less fatter version of him. Scary to see him in Puerto Rico during those days as the crowds were wild and would throw bottles and all kinds of shit in the ring. I saw a JYD match vs I think Kamala actually in Houston and he got a Hulk Hogan like reaction from a huge crowd, never knew he was that popular as like Kamala once he got to the WWF he was turned into a cartoon character.

I mean when I brought it up to him during one of his pods I co hosted with him he seemed pretty embarrassed by it but poor Booker T having to tolerate Vince walking up to hm backstage in a vignette and saying “what up my ni^^a?!” And it’s not like Tito Santana was portrayed much better, I remember one match Jesse Ventura was commentating and he called him a taco vendor, can you imagine someone saying that today?!!

The wrestling industry has always been filed with stereotypes of all kinds.

For all the Kamala, Akeem, or other minority racial stereotypes, remember every decade always has their "White Trash" or "Hillbilly" characters as well.

Hillbilly Jim and Uncle Elmer from the 80's.
The Godwins and Wyatt family after that. I am sure there are many more I am forgetting.

Hell some of the biggest "Heels" in the 50's and 60's were Nazi characters, followed by all the Russians in the 70's and 80's.

Oh for sure, I wasn't just saying it was limited to black characters but to me their portrayals were the worst, I mean to see jYD barking like a dog, who the fuck in creative sat there and said "hey JYD I got this idea.......!"

I remember in the early 2000's XPW which was like a knockoff ECW had a tag team called The West Side Ni**ers and they had merch that kids were wearing that said that! Their ring announcer also wore a Nazi outfit and would goose-step to the ring. I went to the super show they had at The Sports Arena which might have been their biggest show ever with Sabu vs Funk and it was wild. The show I went to at Birmingham High in the valley was even wilder as it was packed and Supreme almost died twice as both ladder stunts they had him do went horrible wrong but that guy wasn't human, might be the best bump taker ever.

Speaking of XPW and insane bumps, check out either on the New Jack, Vic Grimes incidents.
i can't believe New jack is not in jail after all the down right assaults he has perpetuated in the ring.
That guy is a legit psychopath.

I'll never forget the XPW show at Birmingham as it was PACKED and I'm sitting next to this Hispanic girl with a baby(later I would learn it was Supreme's girlfriend/wife?) and she at one point had to be called down to the ring because the first stunt* went horribly wrong. Then proceed to do a second stunt that goes even worse than the first.

*they had 3 sides of the ring with ropes and one was open so they have Supreme climb what had to be a 40 ft ladder and he's so fucking big that the ladder collapses and he falls and hits the open edge of the ring between his ribs and chest and was down for close to 15 minutes. He then gets up and they bring out an even taller ladder setting it up in the middle of the ring and I think the plan was to push him over and out of the ring onto a table with barbed wire, broken lightbulbs..... Well he gets up to the top of the ladder and I think it was Rob Black pushes the ladder and of course Supreme overshoots the table right onto the unpadded concrete and was down for another 10 minutes and his lady is crying but he got up with a smile on his face and just walked to the back. I would guess he probably made no more than $200 for all this.
