The real life drama that mixed martial arts provides to the viewers and fans is uncomparable to the drivel written up by pro wrestling writers.ultraphobic71 wrote:The New WWE CCO Donna Goldsmith stated that MMA isn't much of a threat to WWE because MMA doesn't have real stars or storylines. Big Nog, Mirko Cro Cop, Kazushi sakuraba, Randy Couture, Fedor Emelianenko, Lyoto Machida, Houstan Alexander, Forrest Griffin, Cung Le, Royce Gracie and the shamrock brothers have careers that hollywood wouldnt even be able to dream up. Thats fucking drama
Not some roided up half wit disses another roided up half wit to the cheers of the inbred.
And lets not forget popular Brazilian fighters are extremely popular and on folk hero status, Yoshiro Akiyama is one of the most popular people in korea, GSP in a mega star in Canada and famous in the US as well.
And as the champ Chuck Liddel was more popular then any wrestler in 00's
So yeah that guys point, and I guess yours, is fucking stupid

Quite frankly, if the UFC/WEC were to televise a live fight card once a month, consistently, they'd be a serious threat to completely overtake the WWE across all the demographics. They've already done so with boxing.

Re: The Never Ending MMA thread
Cro-Cop's got Dana's panties in a twist...
COLOGNE, Germany – Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic’s return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship was a short one.
Not long after stopping Mostapha Al-Turk in the first round of UFC 99 on Saturday at Lanxess Arena in his first fight in the UFC since back-to-back losses in 2007, Filipovic informed UFC president Dana White that he had signed a three-fight contract with the Japan-based DREAM.
White had signed Filipovic less than a month ago to a one-fight deal, the first time in more than nine years that he’d done that. He had worked out terms on two additional fights, but said he’d only put pen to paper for Saturday’s bout.
He brought Filipovic back because he knew the Croat is still very popular and Filipovic insisted he wanted to make a run for the title.
That proved not to be the truth. After turning down much tougher opposition, including Cain Velasquez, who defeated Cheick Kongo later on the card, he wound up with the lightly regarded Al-Turk.
But instead of getting a shot at big names like Randy Couture or Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and fighting his way into title contention, Filipovic opted to bolt for Japan.
“Isn’t that a dirty [expletive] thing to do?” White asked rhetorically after being queried about Filipovic’s deal with DREAM. “He [expletived] me. The first time in the history of the company I do one over the phone. He promised me a three-fight deal and he [expletived] me.”
Filipovic looked unsteady and hardly impressive in defeating Al-Turk, who is winless in the UFC. He never landed one of his vaunted kicks and the fight ended not from a punch but when he poked Al-Turk in the eye with his finger.
Referee Dan Miragliotta didn’t see the poke, so it was regarded as a clean blow and Filipovic won by stoppage.
Filipovic was fighting five months to the day after knee surgery, one of several injuries he said kept him from performing at his best in his first stint in the UFC. Before the fight, he called his 1-2 UFC record “the black spot” on his career.
While speaking with reporters on a prefight conference call, Filipovic enthused about his return and said he was gunning for a title shot. All the while, he apparently knew he was in it for a one-fight deal.
He texted White on White’s cellular phone and told him he wanted to return. White said Filipovic declined numerous opponents.
Apparently, Filipovic, who is from Croatia, wanted to fight in Germany and use the UFC bout as a tuneup. He did and is now Dream bound, but he’ll almost certainly never fight in the UFC again.
“He didn’t keep his word,” White said, who said he’d had a two-hour talk with Filipovic on the day Filipovic texted and asked to be able to return. “He talked about honor and all this other [expletive] and he [expletived] me.
“He fed me this bull [expletive] about wanting to take a run for the title, and what I think he did was, he went out and did this. He turned down every other [expletive] fighter I offered him, because I needed him to fight Cain. He didn’t just poke Al-Turk; he poked me, too.”
As is his custom, Filipovic skipped the postfight news conference and could not be reached to comment on the DREAM deal.

Tim Sylvia got knocked the fuck out by Ray Mercer, and it took all of 9 seconds. Pretty funny because it happened to Timmay, but kind of sad for MMA.

But this was the same Ray Mercer who got beat by Kimbo Slice. The only thing that this proves is that Fedor doesn't just beat someone, he also takes their soul, leaving them an empty shell.ultraphobic71 wrote:I hope this proves once and for all, that boxers are the ultimate fighters.Lopes wrote:Tim Sylvia got knocked the fuck out by Ray Mercer, and it took all of 9 seconds. All this proves is that if you get hit flush on the chin by boxer wearing 4oz gloves your gunna go down fast.
and that Tim Sylvia has gone downhill fast

Did anybody else catch the Guida/Sanchez fight tonight? It was fucking awesome. I don't see how Guida survived that head kick, it was brutal. Tough call for the judges, I could have seen it going either way.

That first round and esp. the head kick were hard to watch they were so nasty, haha.

I think that was one of the fastest paced fights that went the full 3 rounds, both those guys have unreal stamina, and Clay Guida's head is made of sand or something.

Everything about that fight was great. The pre-fight intros and the stares, the incredible fast-pace of the first few minutes, Clay getting the fuck kicked out of him and not just getting back up but back into the fight, the endurance of both of them...wow.
Boxing just can't compare to that.

The Sanchez/Guida was the tits because you looked at it and said, "wow this is gunna be a great fight" Then they both do their insane walkouts and you think "wow this is gunna be a great fight" They then do one of the best staredowns in the UFC recently and you think "wow this is gunna be a great fight"
Then the opeing exchanged happens, and well if you could take your eyes off the TV after that, your not much of a fan.
To be honest I had deigo taking every round and getting a 10-8 round, you could give the second to guida, but only by control, deigo did more damage (from the bottom) and had more offence.
Then we had that sick fight from Burns and one of favs Lytle, great fights from dre and ross, and a good grappling fight from Diaz and steveson. great night of fights.
I was really pissed Demark got rolled like that, I was rooting for him

Burns/Lytle would have gotten fight of the night, on any other night.
Dre and Ross was OK, but you could tell they really didn't wanna hurt each other.
Glad to see Diaz get beat, I'd rather see him get his ass handed to him. Never liked his attitude.
The DaMarques Johnson/James Wilks fight really didn't move me at all. I thought both guys were talented, but both were pretty much douche bags on the show.
Edit: Just caught it on MMA weekly, The Lytle fight, the Stevenson fight, and the Sanchez fight all got Fight of the night.

Nah, Sapp's too old, too slow, and I don't think he'll be able to handle someone with real mat skills. I think B.L. will hurt him early, and often. I don't see it going to the third.

Man, there was some horrible reffing at that event. Sapp was tapping out for like 20 seconds before the ref stopped it, and Pedro Rizzo took 3 or 4 completely unnecessary shots before the ref stepped in.

There's real problem with the reffing in MMA. I wouldn't fight without doing my research on the ref, someone's is liable to be seriously injured, unnecessarily, the way things are going. Big John should be doing seminars.BozoMcMetal wrote:Man, there was some horrible reffing at that event. Re: The Never Ending MMA thread
Brock Lesnar Vs. Frank Mir
Lesnar's too big, has gotten better, and should overpower Mir.
Georges St-Pierre Vs. Thiago Alves
GSP. This one shouldn't last long.
Jon Fitch Vs. Paulo Thiago
Fitch. I think Jon might be the second best guy going right now, at 170.
Dan Henderson Vs. Michael Bisping
Hendo's the sentimental favorite, but Bisping's star's on the rise. I look for a late submission, or Bisping by decision.
Yoshihiro Akiyama Vs. Alan Belcher
I have the worst luck picking Asian guys in MMA fights. Belcher.
Mark Coleman Vs. Stephan Bonnar
Bonnar's due for a win.
Mac Danzig Vs. Jim Miller
Danzig's due for a win, but he'll have to improve from is last couple.
Jon Jones Vs. Jake O'Brien
Jones is the hot name at the moment. I'm going to pick O'Brien in a suprise.
Dong Hyun Kim Vs. TJ Grant
Once again, Asian dudes-MMA. Gotta go with Grant.
CB Dollaway Vs. Tom Lawlor
Dollaway has had a huge amount of hype, but hasn't shown me much. Lawlor in what will be called an upset.
Matt Grice Vs. Shannon Gugerty
Don't know either of these two.

Re: The Never Ending MMA thread
I need to do my fantasy UFC picks, which will probably resemble this:
Brock Lesnar Vs. Frank Mir
Lesnar - he's getting the skill to go with his size and I don't think Mir will get him again. Plus, I have some bones on Brock so he'd better come through!
Georges St-Pierre Vs. Thiago Alves
GSP. Dude is on top of his game right now.
Jon Fitch Vs. Paulo Thiago
I think Fitch takes it although it will be close.
Dan Henderson Vs. Michael Bisping
I think Henderson is on the way down for now, Bisping in the second round.
The rest of them I'm not familiar with yet.

Re: The Never Ending MMA thread
Brock Lesnar Vs. Frank Mir
Lesnar's too big, has gotten better, and has something to prove. This is where Brock really shows he's means business. Ref stops fight early with Lesnar GNP, Mir is pissed off.
Georges St-Pierre Vs. Thiago Alves
GSP is superior at everything. GSP wins with strikes.
Jon Fitch Vs. Paulo Thiago
Could go either way. Both are great with submissions, and Fitch can take a real beating. I think Fitch gets the edge as he's fought much better competition that Thiago.
Dan Henderson Vs. Michael Bisping
I am going to go with Henderson. Bisping is the much better striker at this point, but I don't think he can hit anywhere near as hard as Henderson. I think this fight sees Henderson coming forward and Bisping doing his best Machida impression.
Yoshihiro Akiyama Vs. Alan Belcher
I am going to have to go with Sexyama by submission. Sexyama is just so slick, I see him winning in the first.
Mark Coleman Vs. Stephan Bonnar
The Hammer. Ever since I heard this fight was announced, I had the feeling it was set up to give Coleman a win with a name opponent, so that White could get one more big main event out of Coleman, maybe putting him against Lesnar or Couture. Coleman has fought the who's who of the heavyweights over the past decade and looked good against Shogun until he gassed. I see a Coleman with better cardio beating a Bonnar that never was.
Mac Danzig Vs. Jim Miller
I am going to go with Danzig, as I don't know a lot about Miller even though he's the bookies favorite.
Jon Jones Vs. Jake O'Brien
Jones by TKO
Dong Hyun Kim Vs. TJ Grant
Kim by KO
CB Dollaway Vs. Tom Lawlor
Dollaway early submission
Matt Grice Vs. Shannon Gugerty
Gugerty by submission
Lesnar's too big, has gotten better, and has something to prove. This is where Brock really shows he's means business. Ref stops fight early with Lesnar GNP, Mir is pissed off.

Re: The Never Ending MMA thread
Does anybody else here do fantasy UFC? I'm surprised at how good (um, lucky) I am at it. I've only really been into UFC for about a year or so now, and I've done the fantasy picks three times so far. Each time, I've been in the top 125 out of over 25,000 people.
Re: The Never Ending MMA thread
Lesnar could just take Mir down all day and win on points. I think Lesnar will control the fight, but again will do something stupid that allows Mir to take advantage for the win. I'm hoping Brock pulls it off though...
