More reports today out of Indy that discuss just how impossible the
Colts will have enough money to pay both Manning and A. Luck in 2012
and beyond.
The cap hit the Colts would take if Manning was to play next year is
around 19 million.
That is a lot of $$ for a 36 yr old QB, coming off a serious neck injury.
Face the facts: From a financial standpoint, the Colts are better off spending that amount of money somewhere else and letting the rookie QB with all the hype take his lumps on the field.
Gone are the days when a #1 QB pick sits the bench for several years
before getting an opportunity.

Re: NFL 2011 Thread
The Colts would have enough money to sign Luck and keep Manning because of the rookie cap. Based on last year, Luck is probably looking at 4 yrs at around 25 million. All of it guaranteed. For the sake of argument call his cap hit 6 mil per year. Manning's is 19. That's still a shit ton of money locked up in the QB position, and they won't be able to keep their free agents like Mathis, Garçon and Wayne, but they could still do it. You'd have Manning starting for a shitty team with 6 million dollars sitting on the bench though. It wouldn't be the smartest move, but even if they keep Manning and trade down, they're still looking at roughly the same cap problem. Von Miller got almost the same money as Cam Newton. The difference would be tying that money up in a player that helps them now while they're shelling out 20% of their cap to their QB. Looking at the numbers, the Colts are going to have a very different roster next year no matter what.Machado wrote:More reports today out of Indy that discuss just how impossible the

The new era in that town begins next season when the team drafts Luck.

In Indy, the motto next season should be, "out with the old, in with the new".
Manning would be making so much money, how could the Colts afford to
pay that man for another season when he is coming off a serious neck injury.
Common sense says the Colts could spend that money on players who can help the team and be a much lower risk.

How are unknown commodoties a lower risk? Luck could turn out to be Ryan Leaf for all we know. If Manning can play, it's well established what he's capable of.Machado wrote:LAglamrocker wrote:hope Mannig goes to the Chiefs, Orton seems to hurt his finger!

Re: NFL 2011 Thread
I just don't see it (Luck and Manning on the same roster). If Manning does come back, he isn't going to make any promises about when he'll retire, and he could easily stay in the league another three or four years like Farve, Marino, Montana, Elway etc. There's no fucking way Andrew Luck is joining a team to sit on the bench for possibly his entire rookie contract.
Not to mention the money they'd have tied up in the QB position while trying to piece together a team for a "last hurrah" run with Manning.
They are going to cut him, or trade him before his new contract comes into effect (if they can).

I say Luck is the lower risk and you disagree. No problem.
Who's to say Manning can return to being an all-pro again?
Who can predict how many more years Manning feels entitled to remain a Colt?
Also, with the #1 pick in the draft, how can the Colts pass on Luck?

The Colts could easily accept some kind of kickass trade deal (a few #1s or somet shit) for that #1 pick to some team desperate and stupid enough to do it (yes, we all know I'm thinking the Washington Redskins).Machado wrote:Also, with the #1 pick in the draft, how can the Colts pass on Luck?
I could see the Colts trading. If Manning is coming back, they certainly could have another 2 or 3 year window in which to win another Super Bowl and it might make sense to give it a shot. As others have said, Luck could be a bust, it happens a ll the time, and Manning is one of the best QBs to ever play.

Re: NFL 2011 Thread
The solution for the Colts is to use the out clause in Manning's contract and either bring him back for less money or part ways with him. I don't see how even a healthy Manning makes them competitive next year with all the free agents they need to sign and all the holes in their lineups.
It's a bad strategy tying up 20% of a teams salary cap in one position. And it simply doesn't make sense to bring Manning back knowing they are looking at a rebuild. If they decide to hold their pick and take Luck then they are looking at bringing in a lower priced veteran for a year or so who can play in the style of an offense that is being geared up Luck while they rebuild around him. I think Colts fans are most likely looking at another couple of lousy seasons while they overhaul the roster.

Re: NFL 2011 Thread
I don't know that they will. They could. If they think Manning is good to go for another 3 or 4 years, they can probably get substantial value for the Luck pick. This year, unlike a lot of years past, teams will be willing to trade up. They could go get highly touted players to replace Mathis, Wayne and Saturday for example. It's hard to say with that team. Without Manning, they've got to start EVERYTHING from scratch including their scheme. Their entire system is built around that guy. Luck very well may be a fantastic QB, but I highly doubt he's a Peyton Manning.Machado wrote: Also, with the #1 pick in the draft, how can the Colts pass on Luck?

I do like the guy and found this comment from him to be hilarious, regarding Ole Miss wanting him to be head coach:
"I've gotten about 20 or 25 e-mails from people in that regard," said the elder Manning, who was in town Monday night to speak to the Touchdown Club of Memphis. "I passed that on to Peyton. He said, 'Just tell them that I'm 0-10 as an assistant for Indianapolis.'"

I don't think it's possible for them to have the "last hurrah" with Manning if they take Luck, unless he's willing to flush that contract or something. They just won't have the cap room to fill the rest of the holes. That said, Manning has managed to send an awful lot of pretty average players to Hawaii over the years.Crazy Levi wrote:I just don't see it (Luck and Manning on the same roster). Indy has an out clause they can use. Manning's value will be low coming off multiple surgeries. They can probably get him relatively cheap, maybe for half of what they would have paid him. Then it might make sense to bring him back.bane wrote:I don't think it's possible for them to have the "last hurrah" with Manning if they take Luck, unless he's willing to flush that contract or something. That is one option.
The flip side is having someone like Luck, the #1 pick breathing down your neck on a daily basis.
Not to mention the media hounding both of those players and the Colts coaches regarding who deserves to be the #1 QB.
Highly unlikely that Manning can return to Pro Bowl level at his age and the nature of his latest injury.

Half of what they would have paid him plus Luck's salary is still around 20 Million. Does that leave them room for the rest of their free agents? It really doesn't make much sense to keep him if they have to go young.SkyDog112046 wrote:Indy has an out clause they can use. Manning's value will be low coming off multiple surgeries. It makes absolutely no sense for the Redskins to bring in Peyton Manning, as the team is STILL lacking talent in many key positions (including line and WR) and are not in position to contend even with Manning.bane wrote:The Redskins would definitely be interested. Re: NFL 2011 Thread
The Manning on Manning bowl twice a year? Yowza. I've been thinking about it a bit, and you have to take Manning's motivation into account. What's his priority? Money? Another ring? Loyalty? I'd guess another ring and getting as much dough in the bank as he can in the short time he's got left would both be the primary factors. With that in mind, I think Jacksonville might make a lot of sense. That team is a lot closer than people think. Great defense. Great running back. Both of their lines are pretty solid. They'll be picking high enough to get a really great reciever if they want and they have a new owner who may want to make a splash. A guy like Manning could really make a difference there. That and he'd get to stick it to Polian twice a year. Thoughts?Tommy wrote:Peyton in the NFC East? That's gonna hurt.
