Re: The official NHL thread
I have no doubt that the Thrashers drew close to the Bruins earlier this decade. The city pretty much boycotted the team and ownership following the Thornton trade and they sucked ass. Also, the Thrashers were new and fans in Georgia were curious to see what ice looked like in person. That's changed quickly every year as the curiousity factor faded with fans. It's also absolute bullshit if you believe that they are still averaging 12K per game now. Fact is, Atlanta is the shittiest pro-sports town in the United States. $100 million isn't enough for players to want to stay there. That should tell you something about the perception of the team:Fucktard-Nutswinger wrote:The joke is a Bruins fan laughing at anyone besides themself.chungasrevenge wrote:The 3K fans of the Thrashers must be pissed. What a joke.
From the 2000-2001 season through the 2008-2009 season, the Bruins average attendance has exceeded the Thrashers by 578 people per game. Think about that: an "ORIGINAL SIX" team that had a 75-year head start has only drawn an extra 578 people per game over the previous 8 seasons.
Not to mention, during the past 8 seasons, the Bruins have made the playoffs 4 times, and the Thrashers have only made the playoffs once. During the 4 playoff appearances for the Bruins, you have been the number 1 seed once, and the number 2 seed once...the Thrashers have never even won a single playoff game...yet you've only exceeded our attendance by 578 people per game over that time span. If you give the Thrashers an extra 75 years (or even just 3 more playoff appearances over the next 8 seasons), do you honestly not believe that we will be able to draw an extra 578 people per game? During the past 8 seasons, you've made the playoffs 50% of the time, and we've made it 12.5% of the time (and still haven't won a postseason game), and you've exceeded our attendance by a whopping 578 people per game (less than 4%). Congratulations...I'm glad to see that your extra 75 years of building a true hockey market has really paid these impressive dividends.
It's also worth mentioning that, during the previous 8 seasons, the Thrashers actually had 2 seasons with a higher average attendance than the Bruins: the 2006-2007 season and the 2007-2008 season. Granted, the 2006-2007 season culminated in the Thrashers only playoff appearance, while the Bruins didn't make the postseason; however, the Bruins made the playoffs in the 2007-2008 season, while the Thrashers finished next to last in the conference (yet we outdrew you by 447 people per game).
In the 2000-2001 season, we each finished with 56 points...the Bruins were 22nd in attendance, averaging 15,432 per game, while the Thrashers were 23rd in attendance, averaging 15,262 per game, an average difference of 170 people per game.
In the 2003-2004 season, Boston was the number 2 seed in the East, while the Thrashers finished 10th in the conference...the Bruins were 21st in attendance, averaging 15,133 per game, while the Thrashers were 22nd in attendance, averaging 15,121 per game, an average difference of TWELVE people per game...that's right...the number 2 seed outdrew a non-playoff team in a "non-hockey market" by TWELVE FUCKING PEOPLE per game. Congratulations on making the most of your 75-year head start.
You got any more stones to throw, you glass house livin' motherfucker?
Hell, we've never even been sure who owns the team, and one of the alleged owners...the only one who even likes hockey (Steve Belkin)...is a Bruins season ticket holder! Considering we have the worst GM in the NHL, the ownership situation has been a disaster, the most publicity they got was when Dany Heatley killed Dan Snyder...I would say the support for this perennial clusterfuck of a franchise has been pretty fucking astounding, all things considered....particularly when compared with an ORIGINAL SIX team with such a rich tradition.

Re: The official NHL thread
Uh, all you have to do is watch a Thrashers game and it will be clear that their reported attendance figures are completely bogus. There's no more than 5000 people at most games. I wouldn't cite the figures posted by the NHL as a reputable source, as Gary Betteman will do most anything in his power to make the game seem healthier than it actually is - particularly in the markets he expanded to.Fucktard-Nutswinger wrote:The Thrashers have had better attendance than the Phoenix Coyotes (you know, the old Winnipeg Jets) the following seasons:Royal Dudeness wrote:They should have NEVER had a team to begin with. Honestly, an NHL team in fucking Atlanta Georgia. Give me a break. There's better places in both the states and Canada for NHL teams than Georgia. Rumour has it, the Thrashers might end up in Winnipeg. Here's to hopin the return of the Jets is at hand!
2000-2001
2001-2002
2002-2003
2006-2007
2007-2008
and the Thrashers are leading the Coyotes in attendance thus far in the 2009-2010 season
Furthermore, the Coyotes only outdrew the Thrashers in the 2005-2006 season by 32 people per game.
All this with Wayne Gretzky as part owner, head coach, etc.![]()
Here's an idea...why don't you send the Winnipeg Jets back to Winnipeg
Please see my previous posts for why suggesting the Thrashers be moved, and why Atlanta is a "bad" hockey market, is nothing more than a myth perpetrated by dumb fucking Canadians![]()
![]()
Also, attendance is only part of the story - how much are those people paying for the tickets. Tickets that go for $150 in Montreal get sold for $36 in Nashville. I'd rather have that team in a Canadian market, where people will pay top dollar for the top tickets, and help the league build revenues (while not having to dole out revenue sharing $ to teams who are only supported if the tickets are practically given away to the "fan base"). Basically - the teams in Nashville, Atlanta, Florida, and maybe a couple of other places completely devalue the league.
It's only a matter of time before the Players Association steps up and says "we're partners in league revenues now, put teams in places where we can actually reap some revenue because we're sick of losing part of our salaries to escrow".
Boston and Chicago have had their problems over the years, but only because those markets became accustomed to a high standard in the past and when that standard wasn't lived up to, they voted with their wallets. Good for them. The resurrection in Chicago is a beautiful thing, and Boston was well on their way last year until they hit some bumps this year.
Georgia should stick to watching hicks drive around in a circle.

I'm actually sick of hearing about the cheapness of the owners. That complaint worked with fans before the cap, but Jacobs is spending up to the limit now, so how can you bitch about him being cheap? I do think this season is a lost cause, but we currently have the #3 and #5 pick in this years draft with 9 overrall picks in the first two rounds over the next 2 years. That's huge. We have a good nucleus right now, so I think the future looks pretty damn good.Gibsonite wrote:The B's are in a similar situation as the Hawks were a few years back. They won't go anywhere until their cheapskate owner takes the big dirt nap..SkyDog112046 wrote:Wow, who would have predicted that the Bruins would have trouble scoring goals after they traded their best scoring threat? Guys that score goals want to be paid, and the skin-flint owner can't stomach it. You know what that means - time to blame the goalies for all the 3-2 and 2-1 losses! Fuck Jeremy Jacobs
The Thornton trade was unforgivable and pretty much sunk the franchise for a bit, but Kessel is another story. The coaches and players HATED him. That is why he was shipped. Nobody on the team wanted anything to do with him. I still think Toronto overpayed.
The most important thing for the B's now is to start shedding salaries to make room for the new picks. They're trying to do that now with Ryder at the top of the list.
Also, they're only 3 points out of the playoffs, so there is still a chance. Rask might have to take over from there to keep them from being dropped in the first series, but at least a run would keep the city interested.

An owner can still spend up to the cap and be a cheapskate. Jacob's problem is that he doesn't like to pay large contracts that star players command. And much like the NBA this is a star's league. Jacobs would rather overpay the mid-tier guys than pay a franchise player what they are worth. He doesn't like to see any one guy make over a certain percentage of his profits according to his accounting - based solely on gate and not counting TV, merchandising and concessions(which he owns). He has admitted this time and time again. The problem in the Neely./Bourque years was not wanting to bring in one guy to put them over the top because he wanted an $18M a year profit instead of a $15M profit, and the problem since the cap has been not wanting to pay the top players because it burns him to see a guy cash a check that big. Jacobs is a cheap motherfucker. Through and through. Always has been, always will be.chungasrevenge wrote:I'm actually sick of hearing about the cheapness of the owners. Sorry, your just wrong. I see you reference the Bourque/Neely years and obviously fall into the group of Bruins fans who continually blame the Jacobs every time they lose a game for not spending money. It's just not true anymore. Fact. Here are the top salaries on the team:
Zdeno Chara $7,500,000 $7,500,000
Tim Thomas $6,000,000 $5,000,000
Marc Savard $5,000,000 $5,000,000
Patrice Bergeron $5,000,000 $4,750,000
Michael Ryder $4,000,000 $4,000,000
Dennis Wideman $3,750,000 $3,875,000
David Krejci $3,500,000 $3,750,000
Marco Sturm $3,500,000 $3,500,000
Chicago's top player makes $7.9 per year and they seem to be doing alright. Crosby makes $8.7 million a yar. Ovechkin makes $9 million. Do we have an Ovechkin? Kessel makes $5 million with Toronto. We signed Savard instead to the same amount. Toronto's top player only makes $6.5 million. The Bruins are right in line with every other team per positioning and salary.

Thomas and Savard are overpaid. Ryder too. They don't re-sign the guys who command top dollar and instead overpay mid-tier guys. I'd trade Thomas, Savard & Ryder for Thornton & Kessel any day of the week. A team can still be cheap and be wasting money at the same time. The issue now is paying for stars, and Jacob refuses to cut those checks.chungasrevenge wrote:Sorry, your just wrong. Re: The official NHL thread
Their goaltending is good. Rask and Thomas are a good 1-2(with Rask #1). The defense is decent. And Bergeron is excellent. They just need a couple of snipers. I want them to use those high draft picks to get an Esposito/Neely type that can camp out in front of the net and bang home rebounds. There is a kid out of Switzerland - Nino Niederreiter (LW) - that fits the bill and he should be available somewhere around 10th. I think they are going to target Tyler Sequin (C) with the pick from the Leafs. With the way they are playing now they might slide all the way down to Cam Fowler (D) who should go 3rd/4th. And with 2 high 2nd round pick they ought to be able to add some nice depth.chungasrevenge wrote:A little bit of both, but he was great. My issue with them is that they frequently get into this situation, draft well, and then let the players walk or trade them (ala Thornton) instead of paying them. They need to hang on to the stars and sacrifice a little mid-tier depth to make the cap figures work. But the NHL is still always going to be about the stars, and as long as a team has 2 or 3 top-notch guys and a good goaltender they will be competitive.

Had a feeling the B's would bust out against the Habs. We've been playing well, but with 6 guys up from Hamilton, we were no match for Savard and co. Look for the Bruins to turn the corner now. If they can stay healthy, they have to be a playoff team IMO.

Ahh, the annual "let's blame all the 2-1 and 3-2 losses on our goalie" shit that the Bruins have been pulling since the days of Moog and Lemelin. Now if they really hold true to form they'll start shopping Sturm since he is their leading goal scorer. And then they fire the coach. That's the Jacobs trifecta - Goalie, goal scorer, coach. And then he'll raise ticket prices.chungasrevenge wrote:The team is shopping Thomas now, so it will be interesting to see what return we can get for him.

Gainey bows out:
http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/G ... story.html
MONTREAL – Bob Gainey is no longer the general manager of the Montreal Candiens. Team president Pierre Boivin announced during a press conference Monday afternoon at the Bell Centre that Gainey had resigned his position with the organization.
He will be replaced by assistant general manager Pierre Gauthier, who also becomes executive vice-president of the team. Gainey will remain as a special adviser with the team, Boivin said, adding that Gainey approached him during the Christmas holidays and said he would not be seeking a contract extension come June.
Gainey, 56, was hired in 2003 as the 15th general manager in franchise history.
"After a long and diffucult reflection, I decided to leave my post of general manager of the Canadiens," Gainey said. "I believe that the GM poistion requires a long-term vision and long-term commitment. At this point, I am not willing to make a commitment for 5 of 6 more years."
"I have done my best, now it is time for me to pass the torch."
Montreal is currently 28-26-6 and sits in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.
The Habs have posted a 241-176-46-7 record with four playoff appearances since Gainey's hiring.
In 2007-08, the Canadiens went 47-25-10 and finished first in the Eastern Conference with 104 points. Montreal was then upended by the Philadelphia Flyers in a five-game conference semifinal series.
During his tenure with the club, Gainey also served as head coach for the second half of 2005-06 before handing the job to Guy Carbonneau following the season.
Gainey had a lengthy playing career with the Habs prior to his ascension into the front office, spending 16 years with the team and winning five Stanley Cup championships.
Following his time in the NHL, the 56-year-old became the head coach of the Minnesota North Stars in 1990-91, helping the team get to the Stanley Cup Finals. Serving as the head coach until 1996, when the team was located in Dallas, he was also the franchise's general manager from 1992-2002 and guided the Stars to a 1999 Stanley Cup championship.
More details to come.
-Too bad, here is a man,who as wolf so eloquantly put it last year, has given his blood, sweat, and way too many tears to this organization. I have no doubt the Molsons were wanting to fire him and bring in their own man(TSN's Pierre McGuire is the rumor, but thats another ball of wax),yet were nice enough(?) to let Gainey leave with some dignity.
To be fair,he made a few errors as GM.Trading away Huet and resting the teams PLAYOFF laurels on a kid a few years back, making NO deals at the playoff deadline last year, and despite getting shoved around in the playoffs last year, elects to go even smaller by bringing in the Timbits,Gionta and Gomez this year.(yeah, yeah, they both lit it up against the Penguins Saturday afternoon, don't remind me). Gainey is a smart hockey man, but IMO the death of his daughter affected him more than he will ever let on.He never seemed the same after that, who would?

To be fair,he made a few errors as GM.Trading away Huet and resting the teams PLAYOFF laurels on a kid a few years back, making NO deals at the playoff deadline last year, and despite getting shoved around in the playoffs last year, elects to go even smaller by bringing in the Timbits,Gionta and Gomez this year.(yeah, yeah, they both lit it up against the Penguins Saturday afternoon, don't remind me). Gainey is a smart hockey man, but IMO the death of his daughter affected him more than he will ever let on.He never seemed the same after that, who would?

He just seems worn out. Probably a good move at this point. He should go sit on island somewhere and try to enjoy himself.alecjonsludge wrote:Gainey bows out:

Re: The official NHL thread
Gainey was never the same after he lost his daughter.
People rip on him because the "5-year plan" never paid dividends, but this is a 30 team league now. Things have changed. When he took over the team there was nothing in Montreal and nothing on the farm. At least now there's some good young talent in the organization, Hamilton is the 2nd best team in the AHL (with a bright, young, future NHL coach), and the Habs aren't THAT bad. With less injuries this year they could have finished a strong 5th or 6th in the conference. Let's face it - if you're going to go from rags to riches in the NHL you have to bottom out - like Pittsburgh, Chicago, the Isles, and Washington did. That's not allowed in Montreal and that was a big part of the problem. How different would the team look if he could have drafted Toews/Kane, Ovechkin/Backstrom, or Malkin/Crosby/Staal in successive years?
God speed Bob. You've done your time, now try and enjoy yourself.
Oh - Pierre Gauthier is a terrible choice as replacement GM. He was Director of Pro Scouting and is more responsible for Samsonov, Niinimaa (for Ribeiro!), and the horrible free agent signings on defence this year than anybody knows.

Dude - I could debate you all night long but I haven't the time or inclination. I've forgotten more about hockey, and business, than you'll ever know. Leave the ice sports to us folks from Canada, New England, Minnesota, and the Midwest. Enjoy the Thrashers while you can; they'll be going the way of the Flames within three years. You could probably get on the list for season tickets in Winnipeg or Quebec if you hurry.Fucktard-Nutswinger wrote:Do any of you other "hockey experts" want to explain to me why it's okay for Chicago and Boston to vote with their wallets, but it's not okay for Atlanta to vote with their wallets???
Do any of you douchebags have any ACTUAL NUMBERS to prove your point, or do you all just have IDIOTIC OPINIONS completely unsubstantiated by numbers, kinda like Chunga and that idiotic inbred cunt WOLF?

I'm not trying to make excuses for this picture, but like they stopped giving away free stuff at the games. And I think this was on a Wednesday night or something. And there may have been a wreck on 85 and people couldn't get there or find parking at CNN.

Re: The official NHL thread
The Thrashers are padding their attendance averages. Even P13 could see that. Hockey in Atlanta and Phoenix = bad idea. Too many Canadian cities that would be "jam packed." If those two teams can't get people in the stands, how many people are watching on tv or tuning in on radio. A dozen?

16,743 showed up in Atlanta on Saturday night for the game vs. the Panthers. It was the highest attendance of the year. Or so they say. They were talking about it on NHL Live. I guess they had a ton of walk-up sales. Perhaps Kovalchuk was keeping the fans away?

Re: The official NHL thread
Keeping on the Atlanta theme:
Pierre McGuire, of NBC, TSN, Sports Illustrated, et al does a radio spot every afternoon on Team 990 here in Montreal. He's doing the Montreal/Washington game from the Bell Centre tonight (on TSN) and noted how excited he was. The host, said to him "is there ever a place you go to cover hockey where you're NOT excited" and McGuire answered "Atlanta, that place/buidling is dead".
So there you have it. One of the most well traveled, well informed, hockey minds on the planet - not to mention a hockey zealot - and he says he can't get up for broadcasting games from Atlanta.

Re: The official NHL thread
well, lethonin is gone thank god. we got like nothing for him, what a shock. nothing, like i'm thinking that monkey somebody posted earlier may be a defender on our team now. poor dallas dude! ugggh, we just need to start winning games. if we can win, people will come. My point is, i have season tickets on the glass in the club level. my chances of getting laid will drastically decrease if our team moves to winnipeg

Are the Habs about to break the Capital's streak?
