And a big hearty LOL to Tony LaRussa for hiring Mark McCreatine to be the Card's hitting coach. After the embarrassment of the congressional hearings, I'm surprised that big red douche is showing his face in MLB again. I hope the reporters hound him every fucking day about steroids.

I saw the writing on the wall for Hermida a long time ago. Too bad it didn't work out, the team had such high hopes for him. Later, Hermie.
Fuck sigs.

So they're replacing Rocco Baldeli with essentially the same player, but with less injury concerns.

That or their setting up a platoon only fallback if they're unable to re-sign Bay, or sign Holliday.

I had a bunch of stats looking into what Hermida Could bring at Fenway. Dead pull hitter ( think Sheffroid, Cecil Fielder, Dave Kingman, etc ) who could tailor his swing to the Fens. Or I also ran across comparisons to pre-breakout season ( or PED testing ) Ortiz and Hermida with age 25 years. The problem with that is for everyone that puts it together, there are 50 who don't.

Basically Theo traded two nickels for a dime. He only got a dime, but at least it's not two nickels. :?

Red Sox exercise option on Victor Martinez, decline option on Varitek (still has player option) and rework Tim Wakefield's contract through 2011.
Phillies do not pick up option on Pedro Feliz.
Rays exercise option on Carl Crawford.

Philly Daily News says Phils are looking at Chone Figgins or Adrian Beltre; if they are going for cost vs. production then Mark DeRosa, Troy Glaus or Placido Polanco are in the mix. I also remember them being a little interested in Garrett Atkins, but he is not mentioned in this article.

They were joking on ESPNews today that Lackey would be the #3 starter and Figgins would be a backup when the Yankees sign them.

good joke. but don't get it twisted.
i'm familiar with just about everybody in the league.
what i don't do is watch every single game on tv anymore.
just not enough time in the day.

which explains why i might not be familiar with teams that play in the N.L. as much as i am familiar with the A.L. teams

Has anybody seen the interview w/Costas and Selig on
MLB Network?
I have my DVR set to record tomorrow. The program is playing all week.
I think this interview was recorded on Oct 30.
I caught a few minutes and this is why I love Costas-
He asked Bud why the World Series game on Sat. was not being played during the day?
Fucking Bud was stumbling over those fish lips of his,

Unfuckingbelieveable. Derek Jeter got another Gold Glove.

This is why that award is useless. He got a Henry Aaron Silver Slugger this year too. That's the power hitter award. Derek GIDP Jeter.....power hitter.

This is a bigger joke than the Umpires.

I bet he gets the fucking Cy Young too.

Jeter led all AL SS in HR. Not to mention BA and OBP. He's probably up there in OPS but I'm not gonna do the math. Either way I think he's deserving of a Silver Slugger.

As far as the Gold Glove... he WAS much improved this year, though I'm not sure why or how. Not to say he deserves the award, but probably more so than he did last year, at any rate.

This sort of thing happens every year. A player receives a Gold Glove, when someone else might have deserved the award.
Most experts agree that this year Jeter was much improved at SS. Was there someone more deserving in the A.L.???

According to ESPN.COM, Jeter tied with izturis from baltimore for least amount of errors, 8.
Jeter had the lowest range factor by a full point, but had the biggest zone rating.
So I guess he is deserving of the Gold Glove

He improved greatly to be LEAGUE AVERAGE. Which is a step up from the worst Shortstop in the league.....as he was his other three "Gold Gloves".

He still lost going by UZR.
Elvis Andrus: 16.0 UZR, 14.8 UZR/150
Izturis: 15.0 UZR, 13.8 UZR/150
Jeter: 8.2 UZR, 8.9 UZR/150

He was around third in the AL. Fourth in the majors. Hardly a case for best SS.

http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?p ... 09&month=0

Amongst AL SS, Jeter was 7th best in defensive games, 7th best in expected outs, 2nd WORST in double play runs, 5th best in range runs, 2nd best in error runs, and 5th best in UZR. The same guys were above him in most every category, specifically Erick Aybar, Adam Everett, Cesar Izturis, and Elvis Andrus.

“I will be absolutely astonished if there is any other shortstop in major league history whose Relative Range Factors are anywhere near as bad as Jeter’s... He is not a Gold Glove quality shortstop. He isn’t an average defensive shortstop.” - Bill James

Like I said, at this rate they'll give him the fucking Cy Young too.

Varitek is ok as a backup catcher at $3M a year. He seems to come out of the gate strong and then fade once he gets 50-60 games into the season. If he plays 35-40 games over the course of the season he shouldn't wear down and go into the tank in after the All-Star break.

There is talk of Lowell being sent to the NL, might be Philly. It would appear they are trying to clear a spot for Adrian Gonzalez from SD and will shift Youk to 3rd.

There is also talk of going after Halliday. I like the move as long as it doesn't mean trading Buchholz as part of the package. Send them Bard, Kelly & Andersen along with another prospect - that should be sufficient for a 1 year rental.

I think Bay is gone, and it doesn't appear they are going to go after Holiday - the asking price is too steep. It will most likely be a 1 year stop gap guy in left.

They have to bring back Alex Gonzalez. He's the best defensive SS they have had in years, and their record this past season with him was far better than without him. Lowrie is probably never going to be right again, and Greene is not good enough to be a starter. Short isn't the place to just plug in a stop gap guy if a team plans on trying to compete for a championship.

I swear to god, if the Red Sox get Adrian Gonzalez I'm gonna beat the ever-loving fuck out of the next chowd I see wearing a Sox hat. Then I'm gonna go postal at Petco stadium.

Gonzalez is the only thing the Padres have going for them. Well, OK, they have Heath Bell. And hey, David Eckstein! Whoopee.
