You didn't reply about how he used to to overspend at where it got him.
Or that your team owns his newspaper and tv station.
You also didn't say why exactly is the arena a scam? Is it not a POS? Do you remember pre-lockout how bad of shape the Pens are in? Part of it was their arena, or was it Mario's fault?
And you ignored my point about trying to get Erhoff. Actually, you ignored my whole post. it's pretty easy to see why you ignored it, you have no counter-points. You just throw out shit and see what sticks to the wall. You haved live in NY long enough that Isles fan are educated about their team no matter how bad the team may be.
Once again, he's nowhere near the worst owner in sports.
like I said, if this vore goes through on Monday, and the kids continue to mature, we will see who is right or wrong and laughing.

How is asking how is he cheap if ten years ago he overspemding an excuse?
Those are called points, not excuses. A point. Something you have yet to make in your last two posts. I guess that's why you decided to post other's opinions.

Jim Dolan sucks. Sucks bad. He thinks he knows the NHL and NBA and is clearly enamored with names like Sather and Isiah Thomas. This is to the detriment of Rangers and Knicks fans. Slats should have been canned loooong ago, but that is another topic. So, I am with you on Jim Dolan and Cablevision, etc...
Wang "overspending" back in that day was him thinking he could hang with Dolan in the ticket sales dept. Rangers can have the suckiest of suck and still be at 95% capacity.
Ehrhoff didn't sign because no one knows the date of that franchise staying or leaving LI. I honestly don't blame him, and he got WAY overpaid by Buffalo, that is going to bite them in the ass in less than 4 years, trust me. Probably a FANTASTIC thing that the Isles didn't sign that contract.
However, proposing a new arena and having Nassau County taxpayers pay for it (one of the highest taxed counties in America) is bullshit.
http://www.forbes.com/2009/01/22/taxes- ... table.html
I don't think Isles fans are uneducated on their team at all and I think the Isles are on the upswing. More in part to Matt Moulson than Taveres, but we'll see. But this is a plus for Garth Snow, not Charles Wang.
And as for Pitt: Had they not won the Sidney Crosby sweepstakes they would be in KC right now, you and every person on this thread knows that.
Yes the Rangers, while "historic" pretty much suck as an organization, I admit that. But we have a fail safe the Islanders do not have: We play in Manhattan.
I could go on about the team, but it's been discussed ad nauseum.
Conclusion: Wang, while not the worst, still is a shit owner. Remember that you root for the logo/laundry not the corporate jackass that owns the team. I realized that a while ago and have learned to live with it.

Re: The official NHL thread
Tommy, Wang tried to buy the land the Coli is on and they turned him down. Would you pay millions of dollars for a building that you don't own the land is on? Would you rather he lie about footing the whole bill like Greedbrenner and Jerry Jones, then trick the tazpaeysr out of money still? Why should only Wang build his own stadium? Nobody else does that.
And who is paying the billion dollar tab for the MSG renovations.
And do you find it strange that Matt Moulson became a 30 goal scorer as soon as he was paired wiuth JT? Moulson better than JT, lol. And I love Matty, but you're nuts.

Yeah, NYC residents are taxed to death, I'm sure they're paying for the MSG renovation in some part. But we're not talking about MSG.
I didn't say Moulson was better.
How can I explain this? OK, I would rather have Ryan Callahan on my team than Marion Gaborik. Does that make sense?

Re: The official NHL thread
I'm no expert on the local politics that surround the new arena vote in Nassau County, but veteran Montreal Gazette hockey reporter, and native Long Islander, Pat Hickey, wrote this interesting piece in Saturday's Gazette.
From www.montrealgazette.com :
I’m sad to say that the current New York Islanders are not my father’s New York Islanders.
The once-proud franchise, winners of four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983, is a mismanaged operation playing in the worst arena in the National Hockey League.
Team owner Charles Wang would like to change that – the worst arena part of it at least – and he’s asking the taxpayers of Nassau County to go deeper into debt to pay for his dream of a new $350 million arena.
If my father were alive today, I expect he would vote yes in Monday’s referendum to approve a $400 million bond issue to finance the arena and a minor-league ballpark. He had a passionate love of the game and he was an Islanders’ season-ticket holder from Day One. But his support would come from the heart and not the head.
I’ve long been opposed to the use of public money to fund arenas and stadiums and the Long Island proposal is one of the most egregious examples of corporate welfare for a billionaire owner.
On the surface, there is an argument to be made for the funding. The construction will create a short-term boost for the construction industry which is why most of the 3,000 supporters at a rally earlier this week were union members and not hockey fans. And Wang has promised to provide the county with $14 million a year or 11.5 per cent of the gross revenue over a 30-year term. That brings $420 million back into the coffers which sounds good until you figure that the interest costs of the bonds will top $750 million.
The Islanders have tried to make the picture rosier by projecting $229 million in annual revenue for the new building which would produce a $26.3 million return to the county. The only problem is that the chances of the arena producing that much revenue are slim and none.
Consider these numbers: If the Islanders, who had the lowest attendance in the league last season at 11,059 a game, sell out all 41 games in a 17,500-seat arena with an average ticket price of $65 which would be among the highest in the NHL and every fan spent another $50 a game on beer, hot dogs and souvenirs, the total revenue would be a mere $82 million. It would take a lot of concerts and other events to make up the difference in the Islanders’ projections.
The other argument against the arena proposal is a matter of dollars and cents. The property taxes in Nassau County are among the highest in the U.S. and they’re still not enough to meet the budget. The county, which has been laying off workers, is running an annual deficit of $176 million and has an accumulated debt of $1.65 billion.
Things are so bad that a concerned state government took over the country’s finances last year and the state may save the taxpayers from themselves if they do vote yes on Monday. Any major expenditures have to be approved by the Nassau Interim Finance Authority and that group has already done the math and said things don’t add up.

Re: The official NHL thread
Did the Thrashers ever have 11,000 people at a game? And their attendence was much better after November.
That article fails to mention that Wang tried to fund his own stadium with the Lighthouse project but got voted down, as did the arena vote today. Maybe they can play in Brooklyn. Long island will have nothing to do pretty soon.

Bite this:
Later in the morning Hockey Hall of Famer Curator Phil Pritchard was on hand to present Bergeron with a gold watch from the International Ice Hockey Federation recognizing his membership in the Triple Gold Club -- he is the 25th player in the history of hockey to win a gold medal at the World Championships, an Olympic gold medal and the Stanley Cup. The watch cannot be bought, only won, and just 24 others players have accomplished the feat.

RIP former Canuck, and current Jet, tough-guy Rick Rypien.
Reports vary from him dying of natural causes to him taking his own life.
No matter which it is, Rypien apparently battled depression, and perhaps other demons, and it's time that the NHL looks at the "tough-guy" role and it's substance abuse and other programs.
Probert, Boogard, and now Rypien. I don't like where this is headed one bit.

I'm thinking suicide. No way in hell was this natural. The guy was out of the lineup for personal issues, and the Canucks were very guarded about the situation leaving fans out of the loop. I'm sure things will come out soon, but this was by all accounts a very troubled individual.WOLF wrote:RIP former Canuck, and current Jet, tough-guy Rick Rypien.

I'm fortunate to have seen some of his fights in person and he was undoubtedly a tough son of a bitch going up against guys much larger than him, and fairing quite well in the process.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli told the Boston Globe on Monday that Marc Savard -- still suffering the effects of post-concussion syndrome -- will not play in 2011-12 and that the career of the center is very much in jeopardy.
“Marc Savard won’t play this year,” Chiarelli told the Globe. “Nothing has changed in our monitoring. He’ll be examined and he’ll be declared unfit to play.”
Savard missed the rest of the 2010-11 season after suffering his second concussion in 10 months on January 22. Savrad's first concussion was a result of an elbow to Savard's head by Matt Cooke in March 2010. Earlier in August, Savard told TSN that he was still "suffering with a lot of daily issues" of post-concussion syndrome.
“Based on what I see, what I hear, what I read, and what I’m told, it’s very unlikely Marc will play again,” said Chiarelli. “Now, knowing the uncertainty of this injury, there’s always a chance. But based on what I’m told, it’s very unlikely he’ll play. As an employer, I support him and hope he gets back to living a healthy life.”

These guys come up in junior as pretty good players. Then, they realize pretty quickly that if they're going to make it as a pro they're going to basically have to get punched in the head by a 200 pound man every night. A lot of them use booze, pain pills, and worse to numb the pain. Then, at 35 or so, their careers are over and they have to figure out what to do with the rest of their lives, all while dealing with their addictions. That CAN be pretty sad and depressing and the NHL needs to look at it closely. The culture is part of the problem.

Don't forget that they usually leave home at 12 to get serious about their hockey careers. For most of these guys they have had no parents since then. The team is the only family they have ever known. When they retire it must be like being disowned . Shit people get depressed over a job loss. I can't imagine how hard losing your friends, job and surrogate family in one shot would be. Concussions and depression put together are a sad ,sad thing.WOLF wrote:RIP. Boogaard, Rypien, now Belak. If Garth has any sense he'll go get Cory Stillman...and overpay if he has to. A guy like that would do wonders for your team on a 1 or 2 year deal. Re: The official NHL thread
They traded for Bryan Rolston for their veteran leadership, and Garth said no more forwards will be added. There really is no room, and Nino Neiderreiter (sp) may not even make the team. Lots of depth at forward on Long Island. I want them to trade for a top 4 d-man.
