It was a smart move. The game has passed Sr. by and Jr. is inept. The Colts will be better for this unfortunately.
Manning says as of today he could "pass the team physical," whatever that means.

I'm sure a new GM coming in would love to trade Manning for some draft picks to help build a team around Luck.

I don't think they can trade Manning. That 28 mil is due before the start of business next season. They'd have to pay him first and then try and trade him. I don't see that happening. If he leaves, they're gonna have to cut him I think.

This was IMO a TERRIBLE Move!!! WHY Mr.irsay, WHY?!!

Bill built this team. Since 1998 he's been running the show, and might I say it's been a great 13 years! One bad year and you throw out everything that's happened over 13 years?! These are the kind of knee-jerk reactions that can bury a franchise for the long haul. What about continuity? What about loyalty? Who can possibly be brought in who could replicate the kind of success that the Polians have had over the past 13 years?!

And those who say I always agree with everything the Colts do can suck on that. I feel this is a decision that Irsay is going to regret in short order.

No doubt. This season showed how inept they are. One injury shouldn't ruin a team's season that badly. When Brady went down, NE went 11-5. When Big Ben was suspended, the Steelers were 3-1. Those are top flight organizations prepared to deal with injuries. The Colts obviously were not. This organization needs a complete overhaul.

It is nice to see you in Meltdown mode for the first time this entire season - I mean, how the fuck did you hold it together going 0-13...and NOW you've seen enough?

But I have a feeling within about a week you'll have completely changed your tune. Ala "FUCK THE CLASSLESS SAINTS!!!" and "I was wrong, they weren't running up the score."

You are such a mindless nutswinger that you can't be mad too long. When they announce their new GM and coach in a week or so you'll be right back on board.

Bane- i Know about Manning's huge contract, and the bonus due, and all that shit, but it really doesn't mean anything. These things can be worked out, contracts can be renegotiated. Manning wants to play obviously, and to me it looks more and more like he's finished in Indy. Luck is gonna be too tempting for a new GM who wants to create "His" team to pass up, and we all know Manning/Luck ain't gonna work. The only one who said it would was Polian...and well...you know.

Might seem like a bad example - cause McNabb ain't no Manning - but the Skins signed him to some ridiculous contract extension last year right before the Skins got assraped by the Eagles. In the end, his contract was renegoatiated so that the trade to the Vikings could be made. This stuff happens.

Nope. I'll forever be against this decision. I'm grateful for what the Polians have done. I think it's the wrong move. I don't know what Irsay is planning now. Hopefully we'll learn more at 5PM.

And while this blows everything wide open and no one knows what's going to happen, the growing sense is that one reason for the split is that the Polians wanted to part ways with Manning, while Irsay was insisting against that. No proof on that, just a sense that those around the organization have. Irsay is very close and fiercely loyal to Peyton, as he should be.

I guess they might be able to work that out if Manning's willing. I don't see them getting value on the investment though. McNabb wasn't coming off a major neck injury, due 28 million dollars plus the rest of his contract.

Not everything is about money. Manning might be willing to take a hit to ensure he goes where he wants to. Again, I don't know specifics, but McNabb WAS due some ridiculous bonus, and all that went away to arrange a sign-and-trade to the Vikings.

Though no official statement on Caldwell, I can't imagine he sticks around.

Early names I'm hearing are Jeff Fisher and Reggie McKenzie.

Still can't believe this shit. I knew change was coming today, but this is totally unexpected. Completely shocking.

I guess that's possible. How much do you see teams giving up via trade? What did the Vikes give up? Personally, I think it's more likely that Manning is back with the Colts next year. One year with a recovered Manning to showcase, and Luck on the bench is probably workable. They can always look to trade next offseason when his stock is presumably higher.

Polian fired. Goodbye weasel. And a big fuck you for helping to pussify the NFL. But at least he's finally gone.

Colts, Jets, Raiders and Cowboys miss the playoffs. Polian gets the ax. This year is off to a great start.

Stupid fuck. The Polians aren't going away. If they want to return, teams will be lining up to sign them.

If the Colts are bringing in a new GM and coaching staff this is the time for a rebuild. An average roster turns over 18 players a year, and it's closer to 30 with a coaching change.

I would say Manning goes elsewhere next year. Teams with good defenses and reasonable sound offenses that are a QB and a couple of playmakers away from being a legitimate contender, especially one that looks like they have a short window of opportunity. They bring in Manning and pick up a couple of receivers and try to win the whole thing over the next 2-3 seasons. Baltimore & San Fran are solid all around teams with excellent defenses and running games that currently have sub-par QBs. Those teams with Manning at just 80% of what he was in his prime would be immediate favorites.

Polian doesn't have a lot of friends left in the NFL. At last check several stadiums banned him from their premises. I don't think there will be teams lining up to bring them in, especially since it appears the game is passing him by. His track record isn't all that great in terms of championships either. Maybe a team that perennially sucks might take a chance on him, but that's it.

You really believe that?

The Polians' resume is the 2011 Colts, and it ain't pretty.

Their biggest "accomplishment" is drafting Peyton Manning. My grandmother could have done that.

I absolutely believe it. Don't be shortsighted and ignorant. Bill is a 5X executive of the year and a hall of fame executive. He's turned two different franchises into perennial contenders. His record speaks for itself.

The Colts are free to NOT exercise the $28M bonus "option" - after which they'd owe Manning ZERO - and he'd then become an "unrestricted free agent."

They would then be free to try to sign him to new contract terms - along with anyone ELSE who chose to bid for his services (of course) - if they so desired.

I'm aware of that. The discussion was about the possibility of trading him so the Colts could get value out of it.

very surprising move...i just dont get why Caldwell aint fired, he sucks so bad

Polian wasnt the problem...they had enough talent to win some games...the problem was the coach

Freeney, Mathis, Bethea, Angerer, Wayne, Clark, Collie, Garcon, Saturday, Tamme, all pretty decent players

I understand this. But the Colts might want to try to work something where they can get draft pick compensation for Manning, which obviously doesn't happen if they just cut him loose.

Nice to have you back in the NFL thread. Any thoughts on Tebow? You've been kinda silent on that subject the last few weeks.

2-14, and a team that suddenly looks old and undertalented.

So my beloved Cowboys missed the playoffs after having the lead in the divison, as well as the 4th quarter, for much of the year.

People are so quick to blame Tony Romo, and some of it rests on him, but especially during their win streak he had his head on straight. Romo played with a ton of passion this season, but nobody else around him did. The talent on this team is deep, but they simply lack the drive to be successful. Talent can't make up passion.

Rob Ryan should be fired and some say probably will be. His defense was a disaster for much of the season, allowing the Giants to walk into the end zone in both games. The secondary is a joke and the offensive line needs major help.

Mark my words, Jerry Jones has seen the error in his ways at long last. This is a loss he's going to remember for a long, long time. There are many changes in the immediate future for the Cowboys and a new team with a new attitude will be taking the field this September.

I think you are wrong. There is always a bit of change season to season, but the Cowboys team that takes the field in 2012 is going to look a lot like the one that choked last night.

Yep. The Cowboys won't really be back until JJ either sells the team or gets wise to the fact that he has no business playing GM.

Speaking on NBC SportsTalk Monday, Peter King supported this notion.

He’s heard that Irsay views Manning’s future as a “family decision” and not a “football decision.”

So what does that mean?

“It means to me that Jimmy Irsay is going to give Peyton Manning his $28 million bonus unless one of two things happen: Manning absolutely can’t play football or Manning wants out,” King said. “So I think Irsay has essentially put the onus on himself to make that huge decision.”

It sets up an interesting scenario for the direction of the Colts franchise. Will Irsay only hire a general manager or coach that want to work with Manning? Then again, will many coaches and general managers not want to work with a healthy Manning if Irsay is playing the bill?

Manning’s health has been lost in all the speculation. We truly have no idea if he’ll ever play pro football again.

If Manning does play again, Irsay’s “family” approach to the business makes it more likely Manning will remain in Indianapolis.
