Marlins fire Fredi Gonzalez, bench coach Carlos Tosca, and hitting coach Jim Presley. Fuck Presley, glad he's gone. Bummed about Fredi and Carlos though. I kinda saw it coming though, the Fish have been way too inconsistent this year. I just say nuke the bullpen...problem solved. Edwin Rodriguez, coach for the AAA New Orleans club, has been named interim manager.

The way things are going this year, we're gonna be sellers instead of buyers. :?

Well the Braves just got their next manager. Thanks Florida.

Whatever, that franchise stirred up a ton of bad karma with the way they treated Girardi when he was there.

Bad news for the Red Sox.
So far the outfield injuries have been mostly blessings in disguise as a scrappy group of backups have all hit very well.

But I do not see how the Sox can possibly come out on top this time.
Bill Hall (one of the scrappy backup outfielders) is supposedly gonna replace Pedroia at 2nd base.

Really too bad, the team was really tearing it up until these last couple games, and Dustin Pedroia's injury comes the night after his 3 home run game in Colorado :?

Red Sox placed 2B Dustin Pedroia on the 15-day disabled list with non-displaced fracture in his left foot.
The Red Sox are still reviewing Pedroia's CT scan and won't have a timetable for his return until maybe Sunday morning. The scrappy second baseman was injured during Friday night's game and showed up to the ballpark on Saturday with crutches at his side. He could be out for over a month.

Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that Dustin Pedroia has a fracture, presumably in his left foot, and is headed for the disabled list.
Pedroia showed up to San Francisco's AT&T Park on Saturday with crutches after injuring his left foot during Friday's game. The Red Sox haven't revealed much information at the moment, but a broken foot or ankle would obviously put him out for an extended period of time.

Jeremy Hermida
Junichi Tazawa

Pedroia being out is going to hurt them. Buchholz could really hurt them, especially if the leg injury causes him to change his delivery. Nobody else on that list will effect them in the short term. When was the last time that JD Drew wasn't hurt?

It's shit like this that makes it hard to feel sorry, or in many cases even respect professional athletes. In the real world, not the safe bubble of pro athletes, this fucker would be fired, no severance package and would likely find it hard to get rehired anywhere else. In this case, he will get to act like an asshole, keep $45 million and get another job elsewhere because he is able to pitch mildly successfully in the major leagues. Gotta love unions. Fuck him.

Goddammit. My Fish are in a clusterfuck right now. Swept by the Padres (not much bats, but Christ do they have a 'pen and a D, I'm so gelus!) and Lemmy only knows what's going on with the manager situation. 1st base coach Dave Collins resigned the other day, in protest to Fredi's dismissal. Who knows what's going on with the Valentine deal, I've heard reports that he's out of the running, and from what he's said, "That's news to him." Right now, Edwin Rodriguez is coaching the team on their trip to Puerto Rico vs. the Mets. Most of the guys are playing like shit (I've noticed Uggla's working his ass off, as is Cody Ross.) But the team is just...blah...on the whole. The Pen needs to die. It's a very sad time to be a Marlins fan now.

Well, the guy has a great baseball mind. And he has been successful...took the Mess to the 99 NLCS, and in the WS in 2000. And he was also successful in Japan. BUT. He wants things done HIS way, he wants control. And I dunno if Loria is willing to let go of that power. And what are the Marlins willing to pay him, and how long? Will he bring in his own coaches? What if Bobby and Loria bumped heads? Loria is fire-happy, ask GI Joe. Everything is a mess right now.
I really wouldn't mind if Buck Showalter got a shot. Why not?

Article in the Palm Beach Post about Fredi's firing. Note what Bobby Cox has to say.

Joe Simpson has been around the Atlanta Braves for nearly two decades. The former big-league outfielder and current broadcaster witnessed the respect players had for Fredi Gonzalez during Gonzalez's four years as a third-base coach. He has heard those players speak of the former Marlins manager admirably.

He has come to one conclusion:

"I don't expect Fredi to be out of a job for long. He is too good."

Gonzalez's dismissal from the Marlins - where he became the organization's winningest manager in 3 1⁄2 seasons - was met with surprise around the baseball world, especially in Atlanta.

Gonzalez has been praised nationally for the job he did under the financial constraints that come with working for Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria. And Gonzalez gained respect for the way he handled Hanley Ramirez's outburst when the superstar shortstop loafed on the field and criticized his manager and teammates.

Now, those in baseball are coming to Gonzalez's defense, an indication that Simpson is right: Gonzalez will be back on the bench, in some capacity, and soon.

The most popular belief is Gonzalez will slide into the seat occupied by Braves manager Bobby Cox, who is retiring in October after 30 years as a manager. Gonzalez and Cox are close, as are their families. The two talk frequently - Cox was one of the first to speak with Gonzalez after Gonzalez was fired. Each time the Marlins played the Braves during Gonzalez's years in Florida, the two visited. When the Braves were in South Florida last month, Gonzalez's son, Alex, spent as much time in the Braves' dugout chatting with Cox as he did in the Marlins' dugout.

It was as if Gonzalez, who last coached in Atlanta in 2006, was still a part of the family.

And Cox did not hold back when defending his protégé.

"Everything he's done for (Loria), are you (kidding) me?" Cox told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"They've gone down to the end every year, playing their (rear ends) off. (Loria) doesn't appreciate anything. He's one of those guys that thinks you change (just for the sake of change). He's always wanting to fire the coaches. Always. That's his history. He lost a good one there."

While Braves current hitting coach Terry Pendleton has been mentioned as a serious candidate, some believe Gonzalez jumped to the top of the list. And executive Frank Wren's history shows he may be more willing to make the move to somebody who has been away from the organization than the man Wren replaced, John Schuerholz. Pendleton won the 1991 MVP while with the Braves and has been on Cox's staff for nine seasons.

Wren did not let sentimentality get in the way when allowing iconic pitchers Tom Glavine and John Smoltz to leave.

"I think culture shock is the last thing you need when you're talking about bringing in a new manager, a new regime," Braves leader Chipper Jones told the Journal-Constitution. "Right down to the little things of how you run spring training, how the everyday atmosphere around the clubhouse is - all those things are very important.

"I think everybody in here would love to have Fredi back."

Gonzalez, who lives in Marietta, Ga., was gracious while departing, even though he did not speak to Loria the morning he was fired. The timing may have surprised him but he knew the clock started ticking before the start of the season, or when Loria declared the Marlins playoff material.

Gonzalez told me weeks ago that he was not overly concerned about his future if he were fired, saying he would return to coaching third base if necessary. Which means he does not have to be the manager to rejoin the Braves, or work for any other organization.

But if Manny Acta can resurface in Cleveland after winning 38 percent of his games in Washington, then Gonzalez must look like, well, Bobby Cox, with a .497 winning percentage under Loria. And Gonzalez's name is hot and Atlanta, with one media member even saying the Braves should hire him as a consultant now just so another team does not scoop him up.

"I would say he's on the short list," Simpson said. "He worked for the team and knows the organization. I thought he did a marvelous job given the financial restraints and so does everybody else I've talked to in baseball."

Interleague play needs to stop. It was originally positioned as a way to see the other teams' stars but then they decided they needed to have rivalry games every year so the teams don't rotate that much anyway. The matchups aren't really compelling, and AL pitchers not used to batting are getting hurt at the plate. It's time to end it.

Great comeback by the Yankees last night in l.a.
Torre has a rep for "burning out" pitchers and last night he over-extended that guy broxton.

Anybody else watch the game?

Broxton threw 48 pitches. This is after he threw 19 the previous evening.

Once the Yankees tied the game, common knowledge the manager takes out the closer.
Not Torre. He left him in there to intentionally walk Jeter and then face
1 more hitter.
WOW!!!
The guy might need 2 days off before he can even pick up a ball.

Can came through in the 10th with the go-ahead homer off sherill.
Mo pitched the final 2 innings. The way he pitched, 2 dodgers were kicked out of the game by the home plater umpire for arguing strikes,

Yup.

It is mostly BS,
because of the DH/no DH, the whole setup heavily favors the NL.
Yet, they still seem to lose these games.

I don't agree. I think it favors the home team. AL teams that play against an NL team that's probably going to use a utility infielder as a DH while the AL team has a 30-run HR bat in that spot makes it a win for the AL.

In NL parks the pitcher has to bat for the AL which is basically a sure out. Not to say NL pitchers are terrific hitters but they at least get a few at-bats every 5 days.

I'd rather them either adopt NL rules at AL parks and vice versa to really make things fresh and give the fans something new to watch.

Either that or make the NL teams have a DH already and end this bullshit with the pitchers batting.

And I watched the Yankees/Dodgers last night... vintage Torre. Broxton was toast, but you have to give credit to those two nobodies the Yankees had in the outfield that had great at bats there to drive up his pitch count.

The media is ripping Torre for bringing in broxton with a 4 run lead.
Torre should take the blame.
Did he want to win the series so badly that he decided to run his closer out there, even though he threw the day before.

The Yankees hitters that inning made him work. His pitch count might have been reduced by 6 or 7 if Torre removed him after the game was tied.
Most managers would have gone with the closer until the game was tied. After that, you take the guy out and save him from over-use.
Torre wants to ruin another pitcher and add that name to his resume

Tanyon Sturtz, Paul Quantill, Scott Proctor :o

Torre's notoriously AWFUL with bullpens. He trusts 1-2 guys and burns them out. Rarely ever allows young guys in tight spots.

Had he managed the Yankees last year I don't think Phil Hughes would have emerged as a bullpen ace which gave him the confidence to fulfill his potential as a starter this year.

Victor Martinez joins the long list of Red Sox on the Disabled List.

No way Varitek can match his offensive numbers.
Although he is hitting decently during his limited playing time so far this year, in the past it was almost like having an automatic out in the lineup.
