In some ways yes, but at the same time I think overall the NFL is way to fire happy. No coaches are given a five year window to develop a five year plan. It's win in two - three seasons or you're out. Yet, history proves that if you allow any coach to stick around long enough, he'll eventually get to the playoffs. Look at Marvin Lewis and Gary Kubiack. They're not great coaches by any means, but at least their owners allowed them time to build teams.eddie lee roth wrote:That's what I was thinkin yesterday was really a black monday and it should have been even more!

Can't argue with you there that's a excellent point.
My favorite team is the Steelers and they've had 3 head coaches in my lifetime that's unheard of in the NFL.

Being a Browns fan, my fella Browns fan hate it when I point that Pittsburgh has had THIRTY FOUR non-losing seasons since 1972. Rather than "hate" Pittsburgh, the Cleveland Browns need to EMULATE the Pittsburgh formula.eddie lee roth wrote:Can't argue with you there that's a excellent point.

In some cities, 8-8 and -7-9 is acceptable and you move on. In Pittsburgh, it means heads will roll, but not the head coaches. You let the head coach be the HMFIC and fire assistants and cut players, but you keep the friggin' coach.

Re: NFL 2012 Thread, Bitches!!!!
The problem in Cleveland was first ownership, and then upper management. The roster isn't great from top to bottom, but there are some decent players that can be built around. They need a GM that can get more value out of their picks. For a team that consistently has top 10 picks they just don't have the amount of playmakers or depth that you would expect. And they still need a QB. McCoy or Weeden aren't the answer. Maybe Weeden can be developed, but McCoy is a career backup at best.Tymaster wrote:Being a Browns fan, my fella Browns fan hate it when I point that Pittsburgh has had THIRTY FOUR non-losing seasons since 1972. Cleveland needs to bring in a good GM and then step back and let him run the team. Let him pick his coach and give him 2-3 drafts to upgrade the roster. They've got the 6th pick in the draft this year and have to get a playmaker, regardless of position. Instead of reaching for need, they need to take the best available player. Instead of reaching for another QB, as I don't think there will be anyone potentially great at #6, they should grab a pass rusher. DE Damontre Moore out of Texas A&M should be available. If not, ILB Manti Te'o of Notre Dame is a solid pick as well. The Brown's D is already solid, adding another playmaker will make it very good and take pressure off the offense. I'd like to see them bring in a veteran QB, someone like Hasselbeck to push/mentor Weeden and see what he has. If Weeden isn't the answer then the solution is to move up in 2014 and get one of the top QB's available. Someone to watch for in '14 is Tulsa QB Cody Greene - 6'4", 250 lb, cannon for an arm, runs a 4.6 40, and is developing into a good pocket QB with the ability to use his athleticism to extend plays.

I actually thought the Browns were on the right track with Holmgren. In my opinion he's one of the top coaches/GMs ever. He put together/coached two teams that went to the Super Bowl, and is one of very very few coaches to pull that off. In fact I was hoping the Redskins would go after him instead of Shanahan.
But hey it didn't work out for them. This year's draft seemed like a disaster to me. Running backs grow on trees, and Weeden sucks. Real waste of 2 1st rounders and they are gonna be paying for that for a while.
Seems like being a Browns fan has been one indignity after another since they watched the original Browns leave town and win a Super Bowl in Baltimore.

Holmgren is letting it be known that he will listen to any team that is willing to talk to him about a head coaching position.
I think he had the Browns slowly heading in the right direction, with their draft position I'd take a position player that fits their needs and not go for the "best player available" the rookie wage scale can help them out in that regards.
Seeing as to where I lived I got to watch all of Weeden's college career and I wouldn't write him off just yet give the guy at least another year and build around him and see what you got.

It wasn't Holmgren that did that, it was Heckert. Heckert was not going to take Weeden at #22 but Holmgren used his authority to make it happen. Stupid move. Weeden is a bum. Browns already had a QB on their roster worthy of starting; needed added pieces, which came in recent draft.eddie lee roth wrote:Holmgren is letting it be known that he will listen to any team that is willing to talk to him about a head coaching position.

Don't forget, Bill Belichick was the last coach of the original Brownies, watching him turn into a SB machine has been another kick in the gut.Crazy Levi wrote:I actually thought the Browns were on the right track with Holmgren. We'll never know if Holmgren and Heckert were going to have a winner, but a lot of the time it seemed like Holmgren was just getting a pay check and creating a good ol' boys club. You had guys like Ray Rhodes in the pay roll but no one EVER saw him in Berea or in the damned stadium. What was he doing, calling Shurmur from his couch as he watched the games? In some ways, the Browns were making strides but there were still major problems and Shurmur just doesn't seem like NFL Head Coach material.bigbuttskinner wrote:It wasn't Holmgren that did that, it was Heckert. Andrew Luck: Colts QB Is Clear Choice for Offensive Rookie of the Year
By
Nicholas Goss
(Featured Columnist) on December 30, 2012
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is the clear choice for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year because he has been responsible for more of his team's success than other top candidates such as Washington Redskins star Robert Griffin III and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.
Griffin and Wilson have been helped by the league's No. 1 and No. 2 rushing attack, respectively, while the Colts running game ranks 22nd.
Luck has not been able to benefit from the play-action pass much this season and doesn't have a 1,000-yard running back to prevent opposing defenses from primarily focusing on stopping the passing game.
The lack of a strong running game has forced Luck to attempt 599 passes through 15 games, which is the most among all rookie quarterbacks.
The Colts have asked Luck to be responsible for most of the team's success on offense, and he has responded with one of the finest seasons by a rookie quarterback in NFL history.

Not only has he set the NFL record for passing yards by a rookie, but Luck has also helped the Colts secure a playoff spot in the AFC just one year after the franchise finished 2-14 without Peyton Manning.
Nobody expected the Colts to make the playoffs, or even win 10 games. Without Luck, the Colts are probably one of the teams hoping to get the No. 1 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
The defense has played well at times, but Indianapolis ranks 19th in pass defense and 30th in run defense. Luck hasn't had the luxury of an elite defense, while Wilson has a great defense and Griffin has a top-run defense.
Statistically speaking, Luck is deserving of this award. He leads all rookies in passing yards (seventh in NFL) and is second in touchdowns with 21. He has also rushed for 254 yards with five touchdowns.
Who should win Offensive Rookie of the Year?
Russell Wilson

Andrew Luck

Luck's challenge of bringing the Colts to the playoffs this season was much more difficult than Griffin or Wilson leading their teams to the postseason.
Without a top defense or a star running back, Luck has been under so much pressure this season to perform at a high level. If he doesn't play well, it's incredibly tough for the Colts to win games.
If Wilson or Griffin struggle, the Seahawks and Redskins can still win by running the football effectively and playing great defense. The Colts aren't going to beat teams consistently if they have to rely on their running game and defense.
Luck has played a larger role in his team's success than Griffin and Wilson have, and when you combine that with a strong statistical season, the Colts quarterback becomes the clear choice for the 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

He's been pretty mediocre since 1996 and I think his tenure in Cleveland really hurt his professional reputation. The Browns made ZERO improvements with respect to their record from the time of Holmgren's arrival in Cleveland until his departure. And that falls solely on him, because Lerner let him do EVERYTHING.NeverSurrender wrote:Meathead, Holmgren sucked as a gm. He got relieved of his duties in Seattle. I'm not knockin Rex as a good defensive coach but everybody wants to kiss his ass like he was a genius when it came to defense.
When the Ravens won the Super Bowl it was Marvin Lewis who ran the defense Rex was just a position coach not the guru everybody makes him out to be.

One of my favorite Browns game of all those I attended at the old stadium was Vinny "Ceptaverde" lighting up vaunted 46 defense to the tune of 32 points. Zero was the amount of point the Cards scored that day. An aging Jim McMahon was pulled for Jay Schroeder while the Browns rolled.eddie lee roth wrote:His son is no different than his Dad when handed the reins of a team, full of bluster and hot air about what your going to do but in the end they were nowhere as good as when they were just an asst.coach.Crazy Levi wrote:"You've got a winner in town!"

Buddy was actually kind of scary and had a real malevolent streak. He loved dirty players and was big into bounties. And it was great watching him lose, time and time again.NeverSurrender wrote:REx is alot like Buddy. Big mouth, has good defenses, but don't even seem to care about the offense.
I was at his last game for the Eagles - an upset playoff loss to the Redskins in Philly. This was coming off the "body bag" game, and Buddy had made a big deal about announcing the team's hotel plans in San Fransisco for the next week and all that shit. The Skins destroyed his offense which was all hype with Randall Cunningham, who actually got pulled for Jim McMahon for a three and out late in the game (God did Buddy love dragging his cronies from team to team with him- I had totally forgot McMahon followed him to Arizona as well). He got fired the next day after losing 20-6. Still one of Joe Gibbs' greatest coaching jobs.
Rex talks shit but he doesn't have that same "this guy is a real fucking cocksucker" aura about him. I don't enjoy watching him lose.

I followed Rob Ryan from week-to-week while he was the DC in Cleveland. Initially, he was amusing and he had a relatively weak defense over achieving. Eventually though, his whole "Ryan Shtick" got long in the tooth and I didn't mind seeing him shown the door along with Mangina. Watching his defense collapse in Dallas has been a joy because the word in Berea while he was running the Browns defense was that his next job would be as a head coach. I don't know if that will ever come to fruition now.Crazy Levi wrote:Buddy was actually kind of scary and had a real malevolent streak. He loved dirty players and was big into bounties. Agreed on all fronts. I think one thing he has going for his popularity is that he now has worked under two head coaches that the fanbases in each respective city loathed. Of course Clevelanders liked him, compared to Eric Mangina. In Dallas, everyone hates Garret so Rob comes out as the "likeable" coach there too.Crazy Levi wrote:Rob is an asshole and sore loser in the true Buddy Ryan tradition.
