Lackey was Boston's Burnett. They even got paid the same. I'm sure both franchises would love a mulligan on those, except Burnett was actually useful in the '09 playoffs.

Well, better than being a 3rd place team forced to shell out $150M on Carl Crawford just to compete.
Somewhere in here there's a payroll joke.

Has a manager's kid ever put his job in jeopardy?

Oney Guillen's Tweeting harmful to Sox

Nah. The Chicago FO is notorious for in-fighting. His kid acted like a jackass ( like father/like son ), but it would surprise me if anything came of it.

Hey, maybe they really piss off Jenks where he has a monster year....

It's a nice "problem" to have. But you have to remember the bullpen ( on paper ) in '06 that imploded, or last season's that started out merciless....As long as I don't have to think about Bob Stanley ever again. I'm cool.

See I do still believe that Papelbon should be the closer until he loses the role. He's earned that much. Unfortunately Paps isn't the the most cooked fry in the Happy Meal, so he spouts off some retarded shit to the media, and puts himself in an unlikeable place. Plus let's not forget him "blowing" game 7 against Tampa.

Statistically speaking his numbers trended upwards. Most notably his ERA, his K/9 and BB/9 stayed in the career norms. Maybe he was just unlucky, although with Jenks we can prove that he was victim of circumstance, and resonably expect a "bounce back" season from him.

That said for the BP, it's a nice problem to have.

This is what is setting up Papelbon. Sickening.

Such a big deal is made about closing but the way closers are mostly used they come in for a clean 9th and the game has really been already locked up by the 7th & 8th inning guys. Bard and Jenks will be handling the messy stuff and Papelbon will only need to concentrate on his own inning. That might make him more effective in his role. No 4 out saves, no jams to worry about, just a nice clean 9th for him to come in and get his 3 outs.

The thing that worries me about Pap is that after blowing that game he said he spent last offseaeson dwelling on it and being motivated by it.
He then came out and had one of his worst years statistically.
I hope he doesn't use last season as motivation or he'll have 6 blown saves before May.

It really sucks that a team can draft well and be run the right way and want to compete but is unable to compete because they can't afford to keep the team together. There are certainly teams out there where ownership and the front office doesn't care and just wants to live off revenue sharing, but that doesn't apply to Tampa. This is yet more evidence that either they need to relocate or the league needs a salary cap.

People cry about the fans in Tampa, blah blah blah... I can tell you firsthand if they relocated that stadium a) out of the ghetto and b) off of St. Petersburg that people would show up.

From where I live (only about 45 minutes east of Tampa) it's almost a 2 hour drive to the ballpark. 45 min to Tampa and then up to an hour just to cross the bay and get through downtown St. Pete on 275. It's ridiculous.

People would come if the location wasn't so awful. Move to Tampa proper.

I used to do a lot of business in central FL and spent quite a bit of time in between Orlando and St Pete. I always thought it was a pain going into the St Pete airport and tried to book everything through Orlando even if my business was west of Lakeland. I just took a look at the exact location of Trop - who the hell is the idiot who decided to put it at the southern end of the St Pete peninsula? That park should be sitting right off Route 4 on the east side of Tampa so it could draw from all of central FL.

Bingo... I'm just outside of Lakeland. If they relocated closer to central FL they'd pull from Tampa AND Orlando.

Bill James wrote about how it's more efficient to use your closer when the game is one the line, as opposed to "save" situations. Makes sense, no one listens.

Unfortunately for Papelbon he couldn't even save in the 9th, yet thinks he should be paid like Rivera. Rivera's God, and you won in '07. There's a HUGE difference.

Nope while 2007 wouldn't have happened if he didn't get so hot and practically carry the offense on his back in June. I still hate the motherfucker and always will. As for Jenks, we'll see.

Hello, Scott Podsednik. Sigh. Although I'm glad the Angels didn't pay that much or commit that many years to Beltre, we're basically going into this season with the same wretched offense as last year and hoping Morales can bounce back.
