It's a good thing the Red Sox don't open at home since we have a possible 6-12 inches of snow coming Thurday night into Friday.

You have the Cubs a little high.

Finally we have some real baseball.

If weather permits, the Yankees 2011 season will begin in just over
an hour.
Showers are expected to fall in The Bronx today.

Yankees win the season opener 6-3.
C.C. goes 6
Joba in the 7th, Soriano in the 8th and Mo in the 9th.

3 run homer by Tex for an early lead.
Granderson gives Yankees the lead with solo homer off coke for the lead in the 7th.

Jermaine Dye retires.
Rays extend Wade Davis 4yrs/12.6mil and could be worth up to 35.1mil.

What a fucking AWESOME night.

JJ flirts with a no-no going into the 7th inning (fuck off Harris, Wright, and Beltran)
John Buck gets a Granny (lands right down the row from me, I'm on teevee)
LoMo goes yard for his late Pops
Bullpen is awesome!
Mikey Lowell and Dave Van Horne are honored during pre game ceremonies, Mike also throws out 1st pitch. Standing O from the crowd, we still love him here. :)
Clarence Clemons did a very beautiful National Anthem

Couple of bad things, though.
Stanton left the game early due to a tight hammy. Day-to-day. :?
And my boy Matt Dominguez (stud prospect) is out 6-8 weeks...got HBP and fractured his elbow. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Attendance was 41,237...and the Marlins fans FAR outnumbered the Mets fans!! :D :D :D
Fuck sigs.

JakeYonkel wrote:Some predictions, since opening day is less than 24 hours away...

I'm not doing records projections, just final standings and some comments along the way:

NL West
Rockies
Giants
Padres
Dodgers
Diamondbacks

Giants still have good pitching obviously but I think they caught a bit of lightning in a bottle with the performances of Huff and Burrell. Rockies are a better team.

NL Central
Reds
Brewers
Cardinals
Cubs
Pirates
Astros

No reason why the Reds shouldn't repeat as division champs, with a little bit of a push from Milwaukee. St. Louis is going to suffer in the pitching department. Cubs will suck again, and the Astros are so bad I'm picking them to finish behind Pittsburgh.

NL East
Phillies
Braves
Mets
Marlins
Nationals

No way that Philly doesn't take the division with that pitching staff, but the offense leaves a lot to be desired. Rollins is trending downwards, they'll miss Utley for months, Ibanez sucks, and Howard is going to get older and slower soon. But pitching will carry them and nobody else in this division is worthwhile. Really if you switched the Mets and Nationals I wouldn't argue with you.

AL West
Athletics
Rangers
Angels
Mariners

Oakland's pitching is really good. I think Texas had their shot last year and the window's closed.

AL Central
Tigers
Twins
White Sox
Royals
Indians

Indians should be putrid this year, you could probably switch any of the top three teams and I wouldn't be surprised, but it's sorta like that every year, isn't it?

AL East
Red Sox
Yankees
Rays
Blue Jays
Orioles

Should be a really competitive division. I think that the Rays' losses are overstated, personally, but it's still hard to pick them over New York or Boston. I could see the Yankees topping Boston - I think they're pretty evenly matched despite the ESPN love affair with the Red Sox. Toronto and Baltimore seem to just spin their wheels despite their moves.
NL West:
Rockies
Giants
Dodgers
Padres
Diamond Backs

I could see it as a toss up with SF and Colorado. San Francisco's pitching is gonna be better this season ( which is scary ), but I'm in agreement with the whole "lightning in a bottle" comment. LA is gonna be tougher too.

NL Central:
Reds

I agree with your predictions here. I think that Cincinatti could be tougher, but there's that whole Dusty Baker problem.

NL East:
Phillies
Braves
Marlins
Nationals
Mets

This one is pretty easy with Philly. I think the Mets are worse than people realize ( which warms my heart ) and Florida is tougher ( which also warms my heart ).

AL West:
Texas
Oakland
Anaheim
Seattle

I see Texas repeating as Division champs. They lost a big piece with Cliff Lee ( obviously ), but that offense is awesome and they can slug their way right to the top. Oakland's pitching is fucking awesome, but I think that they're lacking in other areas.

AL Central:
Twins
White Sox
Tigers
Royals
Indians

Gardenhire always does it. I just can't count out Minnesota.

AL East:
Mighty Red Sox
MFY
Rays
Blue Jays
Orioles

With the signings it's pretty easy to pick Boston to win the Division. If Beckett, Papelbon, Lackey and Dice bounce back? Scary.

I know that Lee spurning the MFY offer ( ha ha ha ), makes them lower in the predictions, but that team is still scary and to think they won't be in the mix is fucking insane.

Honestly, I thought he'd be a little bit better. He'd had issues at Camden but I thought he'd get over them.

I think Kazmir has about two shitty starts left before he gets released.

I couldn't fucking believe when they got Rodney. Even though K Rod hasn't achieved what he did with Anaheim since leaving, talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel with that signing.

I don't think I can remember a time when the bullpen market wasn't barren.

Game one with Walden closing was a success. 1-2-3 ninth. I know there will be some rough spots but it was good to see.

I may be wrong, but it seems like the bullpen is the easiest area to build from within.

Usually that's how team's do it, unless there is a "superstar" availible and they've got the cash. The problem with relievers is they're probably the hardest to get an actual projection for since their usage is so sporadic.

The odds one team's dominant bullpen remains dominate the whole season are pretty slim. The odds they repeat it the next year are even slimmer.
Still with Rodney, they fucking signed that guy?!?! No way.

Being 0-4 every fucking series is BIG.

Seems like a lot of teams are still trying to work out the kinks so to speak. I was impressed with Micheal Pineda yesterday. One bad pitch that hung, Moreland hit for a triple. He was dominant through the first 4IP with all 4 of his pitches working. He's only 22, he's not another King Felix, but Seattle got potentially a pretty good pitcher coming up.

Considering the pounding of Lester, Lackey ( this motherfucker is the #2 ), and Buchh. Beckett wasn't that bad. They didn't score anything behind him. 3ER 5IP with some support he could've gotten a QS. It was like the low 40s there so.....maybe that had something to do with it.

And one of the big 4 ( Hammels ) was pounded yesterday too.....by the fucking Mets nonetheless.

Didn't the O's get off to a hot start last season? I could be wrong about that, but this isn't the first time the O's have played well in April.
I laugh at the "experts" and Sports Talk Radio hosts who are already standing on the edge of a bldg, ready to take a leap.

sf giants fans are the #1 culprit right now.
Appears none of their fans can understand why the team is playing so poorly. The fans are under the assumption their team was not going to lose a single game in 2011.

I'm about as thrilled about Teix's start as I am about Arod finally getting a hit in the post-season.

SF will not win the WS this year. Mark my words. Yonkel I think was spot on in his assesment there. Hot hitting at just the right time. Although I think their pitching will be better.

Im LOVING how well my Reds have started out (4-0 for the first time since 1990, the yr. they won it all). Hernandez hitting that winning blast on opening day was just fucking awesome.

And damn, the Baltimore O's look like they could actually contend this year  Hell, if I heard what I think I heard, the O's record since Showalter took over last season is the best in baseball  What the hell, good for them. Hell, who knows, maybe the abysmal Pittsburgh Pirates can get something halfway decent going w/their new mgr. Doubtful, but you never know. I just don't think their pitching will hold up.

And hey, maybe MLB will juice some more balls; keep up some of these big HRs some players are hitting thus far  I still love that clip of Tim Lincecum requesting a different ball from the ump and you can read his lips "fucking juiced balls bullshit" :D Good stuff.

I ain't reading back through 10,000 pages of posts, so, who are everyones favorite teams? Of course, as I said at the beginning of my post, I'm a Reds fan all the way...

Michael Kay on ESPN NY mentioned this fact today:

No team in baseball history has lost their
first 4 games and gone on to win the WS.
And only 1 team that started 0-4 has gone to the WS.

I guess this means the red sox and the rays have been eliminated

Beginning in 2000, 15 teams have begun the season 0-4 and none of them won 90 games.

WTF, Sox?!

Anyway, John Buck nearly did it again. Hit a 3 run triple, mere inches from a Granny. Chris Coghlan's bat got hot at last...4-5 with 3 doubles. Hanley finally got his first two RBI tonight. Mike Stanton is said to be due back by Saturday.

That said, the ump'ing in this game was horrific, for both teams. At least he was consistent. :?

I don't know what to think about the start yet, trying might give me an anyeurism. It's not that they lost, it's that they've looked horrific doing it. If it was just one run losses, people would probably just chalk it up to a tough break.

I have many theories so far, but it's too soon. Small sample size and all that. Oh, one that I've said since 2009 is that Overatedsby Ellsbury SHOULD NOT BE FUCKING HITTING LEADOFF, when he sucks at getting on base. The evidence is there for that and has been since before he wasn't traded when his stock was high.

Both the 2004 and 2007 Mighty Red Sox had a 4 and 5 game losing streaks ( just not to start the season ). If the MFY started this way I for one wouldn't be in here thinking they'd miss the Playoffs ( though I'd hope ).

All it's done for me is make watching baseball suck right now. King Felix lost today ( 3ER in the 2nd ), which is shocking ( even though the Mariners can't hit LHP for shit ), Dallas Braden ( an enemy of Arod is a friend of mine ) started the season 0-1 ( yeah, shut up  ), Linececum K's 13 and I miss it, the fucking Pirates....PIRATES and Nationals have a better record that the Mighty Red Sox.....

At least there's 157 more.......I think.

Haven't been following much baseball other than the Angels yet. Wow, Kill...wish I could say I feel for ya, but yeah. It's early and I hate the Sox and all. Texas still scares the fuck out of me, it wouldn't surprise me to see them go the rest of the year in front of the division.

I'm going to my first game Saturday night, and Scott fucking Kazmir is starting. Scott fucking Kazmir. Dammit. On the plus side I'll get to see a lot of the bullpen in action.
