Cubs/Red Sox trotting out their 1918 throwbacks tonight. I'm going go out on a limb and guess that although they're trying to recreate the atmosphere of the '18 WS, none of those games were played under lights.

In order to recreate that atmosphere, the Cubs would have to be a team that doesn't suck. Though I'm glad they do. They're good practice to get the offense rolling.

Prayers going out to Gary Carter, my first childhood baseball hero, who was diagnosed with 4 small tumors in his brain today. Remains to be seen if they're malignant or not.

Sweet irony. Red sox defense was fun bad in the eighth. Amazing how cub bad can be infectious to any opponent on any given day.

Fuck Matt Albers! 5ER, 2BB, 0K........aside from Lowrie and Crawford's defense.......or lack there of.

They DFA Okajima ( who probably won't be picked up off waivers and be back on the team soon, and traded cash or a PTBNL for Franklin Morales. Who Theo thinks has a big upside if he can get his BB under control.

Sox reached 1st place for a couple hours yesterday,
then the train completely derailed and rolled off the tracks for one inning and they are back in 3rd. (1 game back)

Still impressive, for as bad as this team started.
It only took 8 games to reach 1st place (as short lived as it was)

Howie Kendrick probably going on the 15-day DL retroactive to last Thursday. Angels have scored one or fewer runs in four of the last nine games and are currently being shut out in the 4th by Atlanta. Yeesh. Gonna be in last place soon at this pace.

Saying it's still early is kinda arbitrary with a 1/3 of the games already played, but no one has been too dominate. Cleveland started off hotter than anyone has expected, and has the largest lead in baseball ( 7 games ). After that a half game is the lead shared by all other Division leaders.

Right now Anaheim is only .5 back.

The biggest lead in the NL goes to the West and San Francisco who hold a 3.5 over Colorado. I still think Colorado is going to take the West though.

Point taken. As bad as the Angels have been, they're still right around .500 and it's still early in the season. Not many teams are meeting or exceeding expectations so far.

Did anybody see how Buster Posey was "blown up" during a violent
home plate collision last night? Early reports this morning are a broken leg and torn ligaments.
The play was clean.
Giants fans are crying foul at the play. The fans are suggesting that the Giants manager should send a message to the marlins/league by going head-hunting in today's game.

Yeah, that was pretty gruesome, but it was a clean hit. I can understand why Giants fans are upset, but it IS a part of the game. I feel horrible for Posey. :( But to go after the Marlins is just straight up mean spirited and retarded. What's Cousins supposed to do, just stick his hand out and say, "Ok, I'm out!" You do what you have to do.

Buster Posey sustained a broken fibula and severely strained his left ankle ligaments in Wednesday night's home plate collision, putting the Giants star catcher on the shelf for six to eight weeks -- or possibly longer -- according to the team's head trainer Dave Groeschner.

Posey underwent three MRIs Thursday to determine the extent of his injuries. If there is any good news in this situation, it would be that Posey's knee sustained no damage.

"The fracture will be fine," said Groeschner. "The ankle injury is most concerning to us."

To heal his ankle, Posey will have to undergo surgery to repair ligaments on both sides of his ankle. Groeschner said the team is consulting with outside doctors before embarking on a treatment plan. He said one option would be to insert a screw into Posey's ankle to help set the broken bone and secure the ligaments.

The team hopes to get Posey into surgery within a week, and recovery from such a procedure usually takes about two months.

"It's severe," said Groeschner, who repeatedly referred to the injury as "football-type." "We're not going to waste too much time."

Asked what impact this would have on Posey's ability to catch in the future, Groeschner said the team has had other catchers sustain similar injuries and return to play the position.

"He's got age on his side," said Groeschner.

ousins sat out Thursday afternoon's game with a stiff neck and a jammed shoulder from the collision. He said he wouldn't advocate changing the rules of baseball with regards to plays at the plate.

"I understand it was a clean play and that it was the play that needed to be made at that time, but I didn't want anyone to get hurt," he said. "There are definitely risks of being a catcher. That's one of the ugliest plays in baseball.

"If I saw a clean lane to slide, that's the play I'm making. I have speed and like to believe I'm going to beat the ball. But there was no chance on that play. It was a game-changing play in extra innings, and I had to play as hard as I could."

Cousins crawled over to check on Posey immediately after scoring. He was chased away from the catcher by angry Giants manager Bruce Bochy.

"I knew I hit him really hard," Cousins said. "I didn't know his foot was caught underneath. I committed to it. I went in there hard. My instinct was just to check and make sure everyone was OK. I wanted to be a good sportsman about it. It is part of the game, but it's a hard-nosed part of the game. You can't change it, but you certainly don't want anyone to get hurt. I wanted to knock the ball clean out of his glove, but I certainly didn't want him to get hurt."

So clean that Annibal Sanchez shut them out today ( his second in a row )

John Dewan's Stat Of The Week

Who's Hot and Who's Not?

May 26, 2011

Want to know how "hot" or "cold" your favorite players or team are, and to what degree? Well, Bill James came up with a way to translate recent performance into a temperature. It's a cool (or hot, should we say) system that provides added insight into to the notion of hot and cold streaks.

In his own words, James' temperature system "gives you a quick read on how hot or cold a hitter is at the moment. Every hitter starts the season at 'room temperature' (72 degrees) and then tracks upward or downward with each at-bat, depending on what he does."

Here are the five hottest hitters in baseball:

Hottest Hitters- May 26
Player, Team Temperature
Carl Crawford, Bos 109°
Brendan Ryan, Sea 103°
Nolan Reimold, Bal 102°
David Ortiz, Bos 99°
Matt Joyce, TB 99°
After starting the season in a serious slump, Carl Crawford has bounced back, and is now the hottest player in baseball. Crawford is 8-9 with a SLG% of 1.555 last 2 games. The second hottest hitter is Brendan Ryan, who has 7 hits in his last 11 at bats. Ryan has come a long way since May 4th, when he had a temperature of 46°. It has been one great month for the Mariners' infielder. Rounding out the hottest hitters list is Matt Joyce, who is leading the league in batting average (.367)

How about the hot teams?

Hottest Teams- May 26
Team Temperature
Milwaukee Brewers 109°
Boston Red Sox 107°
Arizona Diamondbacks 104°
St. Louis Cardinals 94°
Florida Marlins 93°
The Milwaukee Brewers are currently on a 6-game winning streak and have won 13 of their last 16 games. The Brewers' hot streak began shortly after the return of ace starter Zack Greinke. The Boston Red Sox, after starting the season 2-10, drastically heated up and are 11-2 in their last 13 games. The Arizona Diamondbacks are the third hottest team and are also 9-1 in their last 10.

The coldest teams and hitters aren't yet below the freezing point, but they are getting close.

Coldest Teams- May 26
Team Temperature
Kansas City Royals 38°
Washington Nationals 40°
Colorado Rockies 42°
Minnesota Twins 44°
Los Angeles Dodgers 49°
The Kansas City Royals and the Washington Nationonals are both in the middle of a 5 game losing streak. The Royals have lost 10 of their last 12 games and the Nationals have lost 9 of their last 12. Injuries to Ryan Zimmerman and Stephen Strasburg make it more difficult for the Nationals to heat back up.

And the coldest hitters?

Coldest Hitters- May 26
Player, Team Temperature
Rob Johnson, Sea 38°
Tony Gwynn, LAD 41°
Jonny Gomes, Cin 41°
Dan Uggla, Atl 42°
Peter Bourjos, LAA 44°
Measuring in at 38°, Rob Johnson is the coldest hitter. Johnson has only 3 hits in his last 31 at-bats, dropping his batting average to .176. Dan Uggla is the fourth coldest hitter at 42°, and is the only player in the five coldest players who has more than 200 plate appearances.

Why is Aceves starting for the sox? Don't they have anybody else in the org that is better?

Kill, Is this really necessary

BOSTON -- With the luxury of off days Thursday and Monday, Red Sox manager Terry Francona has been able to rework his starting rotation so that his top three will be facing the Yankees in New York next week.

Jon Lester, who will be pitching on seven days' rest, will open the series next Tuesday night. He will be followed by Clay Buchholz and Josh Beckett, each of whom will be pitching on their normal four days of rest.

Pineda is a new pitcher they're not familiar with, so I didn't expect them to win that.

As for "should've beaten King". Are you kidding me? Unless he gets no run support, Felix dominates NY. Like he does everyone. The only MFY hitter who has a good record against him is Teix. In 48AB he has a .298/.333/.574

Aceves was a really good pickup for Boston. Bullpen, spot starts, etc. . I was always curious why NY let him go, when he had options left to stash him in Scranton. If he's healthy he's a serviceable #5. Doesn't have great command, but his pitches have a lot of movement. His BABIP is likely to regress, but when you're sometimes used as a #5 starter, it's bound to happen.

Machado wrote:Kill, is this really necessary
Yeah, yeah it is. Always try to set your rotation to play your biggest competition. I'm sure Girardi if having the option would do the same.

The Yankees let Aceves go because he was injured. A lingering back problem "scared" the Yankees away-Which turned out great because the Yankees were able to look at Colon and Garcia.
Aside from the 10-1 season Aceves had with the Yankees, he is a journeyman pitcher that is very inconsistent.

Now Giants general manager Brian Sabean is targeting Marlins outfielder Scott Cousins, who inflicted the damage on Posey last Tuesday.

According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, Sabean told Ralph Barbieri and Tom Tolbert on the San Francisco-based KNBR this afternoon that Cousins was “malicious” in launching himself at Posey. And it gets much harsher:

“If I never hear from Cousins again or he never plays another game in the big leagues, I think we’ll all be happy. He chose to be a hero in my mind, and if that’s his flash of fame, that’s as good as it’s going to get, pal. We’ll have a long memory. Believe me, we’ve talked to (Mike) Matheny about how this game works. You can’t be that out-and-out overly aggressive. I’ll put it as politically as I can state it: There’s no love lost and there shouldn’t be.”

1. Fuck Brian Sabean. If Johnny Fucking Bench comes out and says the hit was clean, then you just ought to shut the fuck up and deal with it. Talked to my sales rep the other day, he said the phone calls and emails have been getting waaaaay out of control. One of the Giants' own fans nearly got beat to death, and now they want to send death threats to Scott Cousins and his family, who are from the area. Fucking morons. The Giants PLAYERS said it was clean too! Fuck!

2. This losing streak and not scoring RISP thing is really getting old. And the Fish have a MONSTER schedule ahead, and it's only just started. :?
Fuck sigs.
