Yeah but with their prospect rankings adding Cespedes isnt going to hamper their competitiveness. Going against Texas ( who has the top ranked farm system, is that even legal? ) and Anaheim they're gonna need it.

Missing Haren for the season kind of fucks them this year, but with his return along with top prospects coming up, I could see them putting together a run next year ( Choice, Cole, Parker, Green, etc. ). The way theyre structured the payroll shouldnt be an issue. Along with Jack Z's Mariners the AL West just got a hell of a lot more interesting.

Good for him. Seems like a great guy to play for.

Former Giants pitcher Livan Hernandez's wage garnishment with the Nationals will be essentially transferred to the Astros through a series of court filings, according to the Washington Times, which reported paperwork was filed Tuesday in Miami-Dade County, Fla. Circuit Court.

Hernandez owes SunTrust Bank $469,387.22, covering two debts plus attorney's fees and other costs.

The writ of garnishment as it pertained to the Nationals was dissolved Jan. 31, court records indicate, as Hernandez had signed a minor-league deal with the Astros.

My first childhood hero, Gary Carter, has passed away. RIP Kid. :(

Just posted by his daughter:

February 16th, 2011
Hello to Team Carter,
It has been exactly 4 weeks since the last journal and that decision was made as a family. I am deeply saddened to tell you all that my precious dad went to be with Jesus today at 4:10 pm. This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to write in my entire life but I wanted you all to know.
He is in heaven and has reunited with his mom and dad. I believe with all my heart that dad had a STANDING OVATION as he walked through the gates of heaven to be with Jesus.
Thank you all for loving my dad and my entire family. I will still share with you all the last four weeks with my dad because they were incredibly special.
I am thankful that many years ago, my dad accepted Jesus Christ to be his personal Savior because I know He is now in NO pain and is the most beautiful angel. He is now in God's Hall of Fame.
We praise you, Jesus and thank you for giving my dad to us for 57 years.

...but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:31

Yankees trade Burnett to Pirates for 2 minor leaguers.
Yankees pay a good % of his salary and the deal is pending on a physical and league approval.

You know what's funny about that? He nixed a trade to Anaheim prior. There he had a chance for the post season, even if it was sitting on the bench in relief. 80m for that guy. Good lord.

Awesome. Once again the Yankees get bailed out of a contract blunder. What the fuck are the Pirates thinking? He's not good. And yeah, have fun in Pittsburgh, AJ. Glad you had a no-trade to the Angels. Seriously.

Seriously. Everyone said Theo was a genius for winning after tweaking Duquette & Hoyer's teams. Cashman does this shit all the time. Remember, he was also able move Sheffroid? Unbelieveable.

That was some of my latent aggression for the Angels being the idiot team last year that traded for Vernon Wells. That was a similar move to this one, except that it didn't involve the Yankees and Toronto didn't pay any of Wells' salary.

God, what a horrible deal that was.

It's also one who's trying to find someone to purchase the team. Im sure its a lot more appealing that after potentially spending a billion dollars on the purchase, the new owner doesn't also have a high payroll to adopt too.

It sucks but it makes sense.

Just like Ian Kennedy for the DBacks, I can imagine a scenario where
A.J. does very, very well as a Pirate.
His "stuff" will translate well in the weaker hitting NL.

Without A.J., the Yankees may not have won the WS in 2009
Last year A.J. pitched a heck of a game at Detroit in the playoffs.
In between A.J. was an overpaid SP who did not earn his paycheck
month after month.

Mariano yesterday strongly hinted that 2012 will be his last season.
One of his quotes was:
• “Even if I save 90 games. Even if they want to pay as much money as they want to, any team, (it won’t change the decision).”

IT'S FINALLY OVER!!!!!

The Boston Red Sox have acquired pitcher Chris Carpenter and a player to be named later from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for a player to be named later.

The trade finalizes the compensation the Red Sox received for allowing Theo Epstein to join the Cubs as president of baseball operations.

"I am pleased that the Cubs and Red Sox have resolved this matter," said baseball commissioner Bud Selig in a statement. "It has always been my preference that clubs resolve matters like this amongst themselves, as they understand their unique circumstances better than anyone else could."

Selig had threatened to become involved if the teams could not work out compensation terms.

"Though the matter required time, both clubs demonstrated professionalism throughout their discussions, and I appreciate their persistence in finding common ground."

The 26-year-old Carpenter made his MLB debut with the Cubs in 2011, posting a 2.79 earned run average over 10 relief appearances. The right-hander also combined for 32 games between Chicago's Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa clubs last year, going 3-4 with two saves and a 5.91 ERA.

Originally selected by the Cubs in the third round of the 2008 draft, Carpenter has a 21-19 record with two saves and a 3.62 ERA in 96 career minor league games (60 starts) in Chicago's system.

The Red Sox also placed right-handed pitcher Bobby Jenks on the 60-day disabled list as he recovers from back surgery, which took place on December 30.

Jenks went 2-2 with a 6.32 ERA for Boston last season. He was limited to just 19 games due to three stints on the disabled list.

Im happy the Theo situation was resolved, it was getting ridiculous and the compensation IMO is sufficient.

What Im most excited to talk about today is Eric Wedge's announcement that Ichiro will bat third in the lineup. He's already preparing a new batting stance, and this is a chance to see if Ichiro really does have untapped power. Theyre putting Figgins back in leadoff where he played when he didnt suck and Ackley at second. Jack Z has such an early decade Billy Beane's A's farm system built up, I expect them to be pretty competitive soon.

The AL West is really starting to rival the East in sheer talent. Like last year I think were in for a hell of a season.

Yankees have signed Raul Ibanez and Eric Chavez today to
1 yr deals.

Roster is taking shape.

Ibanez is set to be the DH vs righties & occasionally back-up LF/RF when necessary

Chavez will back-up 3B and a little at 1B when necessary.

The Cubs got away with murder. I'm stunned they didn't get a Brett Jackson or a Trey Mcnutt out of it. A guy that was sent down mid season for a GM that brought not one but 2 WS to Boston?

The sports media around here are ripping them apart.

The problem is "how do you judge a GM?" Its not like comparing a set of skills, although because of this situation I expect to see this written in to future contracts. While Id love for Chicago to have to take Lackey, etc. it's just not realistic.

Especially since Theo himself has stated he's moving on from the team at the ten year mark.

The Yankees have signed reliever David Aardsma to a Major League deal worth $500,000 plus incentives. There is an option for 2013.

Aardsma had Tommy John surgery in July, and Brian Cashman said he’s looking at this primarily as a move for next season. There’s a good chance, though, that Aardsma could pitch in this year’s second half. He’s about a month behind Joba Chamberlain, but the Yankees don’t have a great feel
for how far he’s come in his rehab. The value of next year’s contract depends on this year’s production.
