Yankees retired Mo's #42 yesterday.
AMAZING!
Well deserved as well.
Having his number retired before the player has actually retired.
Only happens to the greatest closer of all-time.

Epic destruction of Buster Posey's bat in the 9th if you can check that out. Odd that Giradi went to him in that scenario but he has had him in there in a ton of late. 5th or 6th time in the last few weeks that he has been in as early as the 8th. They also said after the game that he was coming back in for his 3rd inning of work if the Yankees tied it in the bottom of the 9th. The man is amazing.
Incredible ceremony prior. I think he requested some guys be there, including Nelson for whatever reason. They retired Mariano's number to monument park while he is still wearing it-unbelievable. MLB and the Yankees have really embraced this as they should with all the positivity he brings to the game in comparison to so many other stars of this era. I've just never seen anything like today, or this whole season, but then I've never seen anyone like Mariano Rivera either.
I said it after the all-star game and it certainly applies today. Just staggering that he can set aside the emotions of a day like today and roll out there and pitch the way he does. Again, nearly 2 innings today at nearly 44 years old with all that emotion of the day.
He nor Pettitte got a win today but it certainly wasn't due to their efforts as they both showed up huge.

I saw the ceremony replayed though. Fitting tribute for an incredible man and player.

Manny Machado carted off the field with knee injury today in Tampa.
He was running to first, his foot or spike caught the corner of the bag
and his knee twisted in a very violent manner
Remained on infield, near 1st base for a good 5 minutes before stretcher
arrived.
My guess is a dislocated knee cap or a fracture of the knee???

Manny Machado was carted off the field with what is apparently a pretty serious knee injury. That sucks for the O's who are still in the playoff hunt....well maybe not anymore
CC Sabathia was shut down for the remainder of the season with a hamstring strain.
Joe Mauer is done for the season with a concussion.
*edit*
Machado beat me to Machado.

Alex Rios hit for the cycle tonight.
Cincinatti locked up a playoff berth.
The Pirates made the playoffs too. First time since 1992.

Someone reminded me today how
Mariano has always wanted to play CF for at least 1 inning before
his career is over.
He just might get that chance during the 3 games series vs the Rays or
the 3 games series in Houston.
Sounds exciting!

If they get eliminated, I think they should let him play a whole game out there. Get his bats in and everything. Maybe do a double switch and let him close at the end as well. Wouldn't be the same in Houston as the Stadium (plus, doesn't Houston have that dumb hill in center?), but they obviously won't and can't have him doing anything but pitching while still in contention, however unlikely the playoffs are.Machado wrote:Someone reminded me today how

Saw Roger Clemens and Joe Torre will be doing something in Houston for him. I am wondering if Torre is there on behalf of MLB doing something with one of the season ending awards (the new Mariano Rivera Reliever of the Year for example) or just catching Mo on the last stop.
Pretty cool for Pettitte as well that his last 2 starts were in New York and Houston.

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
That would be cool if they let Rivera play a little bit of OF. The MFY's playoff hopes are basically gone, he screwed up his knee shagging flys last year but is about to retire, so why the hell not?
CF huh? I bet it's cause he loved watching Griffey Jr. too.
Manny Machado's recovery time is expected to be 4 - 6 weeks which will place him ready to go at the start of next season. I hate seeing young players go down, while I have no love for Baltimore the O's run was a good Cinderella story. Here's hoping for a full recovery.

Machado caught a break. Reports were obviously the worst last night. Or should I say speculation was the worst.killeverything wrote:

I saw the footage and assumed he busted up his knee cap or dislocated his knee cap, as well as torn ligaments.
Orioles third baseman Manny Machado got some good news: He has a torn ligament in his left knee and could be running again in six to eight weeks because his ACL and MCL ligaments are fine.
An MRI on Tuesday revealed Machado has a torn medial patellofemoral ligament. The Orioles hope he can recover without having surgery.

No shit. That looked like a career ender or something that relegates him to bench duty. Here's hoping for full recovery, Baltimore made the East fun this year.
Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
Last night Roy Halladay was pulled from the game after only
throwing 16 pitches. His fastball topped out at 83 MPH
From 2008 to 2011, Halladay averaged 242 innings per season and posted a 2.59 ERA
Is this the end of his pitching career????

There is speculation that the guy has some kind of illness. He has lost a ton of weight and always looks gassed when he's on the mound. He claims it's a hereditary diet condition.Machado wrote:Last night Roy Halladay was pulled from the game after only

Confrontation last night between Carlos Gomes and McCann
These 2 teams have history.
Difficult to decide who is to blame, who overreacted first and who should have been thrown out of the game.

Cano and Jay Z seeking a 10/305m contract
Holy shit. Let the Yankees or the west coast Yankees give it to him. Unfortunately the only GM stupid enough to is Zuerednick in Seattle.
Considering what a bust Pujols, Arod and Hamilton are I think Jay Z's gonna get worked over harder as a sports agent than he did as a rapper when he tried to battle Nas.

The Dodgers are definitely dumb enough to give him that.
I hear he asked for the extra five million to help him pay his taxes.

No chance Yankees are going to give him 10 years or 300M.
If that is what Cano really wants, then he can walk. Cano is 31. If he was in his mid 20's, maybe a 10 year contract makes sense.
After the ARod contract and now the Pujols contract, teams have to shy away from a 10 year deal because the back end of the contract is a certain disaster and waste of $$$
Would not surprise me if the contract negotiations last through December.
Is Cano the #1 FA on the market? I think so. I can't think of another player that would rank ahead of him

Selig has to stick around a little longer, I'm wishing for a BCS bowl alliance playoff series like college football or maybe a NASCAR system.......Halfway into the season the 13 best teams start the playoffs.
Selig is da man.

He also needs to get Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame; pull the Rays out of Tampa, and put a team back in Montreal (OK, or someplace else); get rid of inter-league play; come up with a schedule where you don't have a team that has played 96 games vs .500+ opponents (Tampa) competing with a team that has played 76 games vs .500+ opponents (Texas) for a playoff spot; and ensure you don't have fiascos such as the 2013 Houston Astros every year!Machado wrote:Wolf
