Ali caught TONS of shit from the old school, white press back in the 1960s. He was almost universally reviled. One of the ONLY high-profile guys who stuck up for him was Cosell, almost everyone else thought he was a loudmouth and a traitor, and were thrilled when his title was unjustly taken away from him.bane wrote:There is a lot of revisionist history on Ali. He wasn't revered nearly as much then as he is now and he did get his fair share of "shellacking". The main difference is that Ali was the champ. Sherman hasn't won anything yet.Rainbow Bright wrote:If Ali was dominate today, he would be getting the shellacking that The Nature Boy Rich Sherman got on Sunday.
Ali didn't become revered until the 1970s, when a) his underdog dismantling of George Foreman made him a true boxing legend, and b) the old-school white sports press guys started to die off at the exact time as public sentiment on Vietnam shifted overwhelmingly to Ali's side.
Plus, I think a lot of it is also what I call "Sludge Madonna Syndrome." Whenever someone like Lady Gaga comes up around here, you have tons of old school hair metallers - who no doubt LOATHED Madonna back in the day - coming to Madonna's defense, claiming she was a groundbreaker and all of the modern pop women are just "ripping her off" etc.
When you've been around long enough, you win the respect of people who used to hate you. Especially when you remind people of their youth.
