So lucky.
Toronto places closer Corey Janssen on DL with lower back strain. Sergio Santos to fill in as closer in his absence.

Mattingly say's Kershaw will need a minor league tuneup, possibly two. "He's going to need some time."
Hate LA all you want ( and should ), I want Kershaw back 100% and soon. The Cy battle between he, Wainwright and Fernandez this season will be legendary. We all know what Kershaw and Wainwright can do, add Fernandez to the mix and it could go to all three of their last starts to pick a winner. I'm not talking like Scherzer's bullshit victory over Darvish either.

LA - Kershaw, Kemp, Beckett, Brian Wilson and Alex Guerrero on the DL, memories of starting last season. Haven't seen Beckett pitch for a few years now. I'm sure his check still keeps the lights on.
Miami Marlins - Leading the NL East! Go Fish! They will not finish last, gonna be a better team.

I've been hearing a lot of people picking them this year exactly as you have. I don't know if that's just an underdog pick or what. Having Fernandez and Stanton does help.UtahRatt wrote:I'm going with Wainwright and hoping the early shit with Kershaw will pay of late in the season.killeverything wrote:Mattingly say's Kershaw will need a minor league tuneup, possibly two. Seattle has started off playing well. There has been a couple errors ( and bad reads in the OF ) that if they don't get that in check it's going to destroy them, but holy shit if those kids and prospects keep playing like they are, then I could see them making a serious run.
Zduriencik ( a recent punching bag too ) has been under a lot of flack recently, because his rated farm system has failed to produce at the level needed. Add in the Pineda trade, Fister trade, and losing seasons the guy is on the hot seat. This is the guy that built the Milwaukee team. Drafted Braun, Fielder, etc. So he's got a rep as an asst. GM.
I still think they need to upgrade to OF defense because as it sits it's ceiling is league average. Although certainly better than last year ( worst ), and adding another RHH would certainly be helpful. Right now they're relying heavily on switch hitters which is pretty risky.
With the injuries around the division ( Texas, Oakland ) and Anaheim's thin starting pitching, the M's could get a stronghold on the lead. I'm not calling them to pull an A's style coup or anything. Just don't be surprised if they go down swinging for the wildcard though. Getting rid of Eric Wedge has done magical things in Seattle....one of them ONLY cost 10/240m.

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
I usually have to wait at least a month before I give up on a season, but yeah...wow. The Angels looking fucking terrible in that series. The joy of Trout's extension is long gone and now I'm left with the prospect of another dismal season.

25 years ago today Ken Griffey Jr. made his mlb debut in Oakland. He hit a double off Dave Stewart in his first AB.
Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
Griffey!
He never should have left. I lived in Seattle around the Griffey leaving Alex taking over time. Today I don't recognize Alex as a Mariner but still view Griffey as a Mariner. Those teams were great.
Ken Griffey Jr and Alex Roidriguez....There were other factors but they did a lot in Seattle, won division titles but if they would have won a series I wonder if it would have changed things? Playing in the KingDome wasn't baseball either, it sucked they built a new castle but forgot to bring the team.
Seattle couldn't afford a new Stadium, Griffey and A-Roid at the same time.

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
That was one of the reasons he asked to be traded, because he knew they were going to try to keep Arod. That and he lived in FL and would fly a couple times a week to see his kids, St. L is closer, he grew up there, and his dad was the coach. It's also speculated that he and Arod saw the size of Safeco's OF and knew they'd never break Aaron's record there. That's just speculation though.UtahRatt wrote:Griffey!

Randy Johnson pouted his way out of town too because of money. That's why they traded him to Houston. The irony is the owners of the M's ( Nintendo ) has money and a lot of it. They only care about turning a profit ( Safeco is profitable ) and nothing about the team's record. Griffey broke down when he turned 30. It was always said he didn't stretch or anything. He was such a sheer, natural talent he felt he didn't need to.
That's all fine and dandy at 19 years old ( real quote: "lions don't stretch when they catch prey, why should I" ), but when you age? He broke down soon, because he didn't properly prepare for it. Still sucked seeing him in Cincy. I was at his Seattle HOF induction this summer and it was incredible. I plan on being at Cooperstown for his induction there too. I get my degree at the same time so.
Now onto today's Oakland victory and what I fear will happen a lot more. The homeplate ump was from AA. There was no consistencies with balls and strikes, a 5 minute delay for a review ( 5 fucking minutes?!? ) in which McClendon was forced to pull Elias after 80 pitches, a 3rd strike on Crisp called a ball ( which scored the tying run in the 8th ). They apparently have 3 more AA umps ready to go.
The A's played a good game, but the game should have went to the top of the 9th tied. I hope the media backlash carries over and Barber ( ump ) is sent back to the kiddie league. He also fucked Oakland's pitchers on a few too. Bullshit.

Yesterday Gary Carter's family was here, as he was memorialized.
Today most of the 1994 team was here to be celebrated.
Beautiful!
The game itself kinda sucked (Morrow's Ks, even if against the Mets, and Cabrera's homer were cool, of course), but what an atmosphere and what a day.
Montreal Rays?

Ron Gardenhire earned his 1,000 career victory after 7-3 win over Cleveland.
The MFY place Mark Teixira on 15 day DL.
The pinstriped Dice K got his first win yesterday because Toronto's pitching staff can't hold a lead. 154m for that guy? Idiots.
Pirates extend manager Clint Hurdle and GM Neal Huntington.
Rays sign Yunel Escobar 2/13.

In the 1st inning against Tampa Bay today, Yu Darvish set an mlb record of the fastest to 500 K. He did it in 401 2/3IP.

The award for best reliever in the AL and NL has been renamed the Mariano Rivera and Trevor Hoffman award.
Ice Cube threw out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium yesterday. I fucking crap you negative that really happened. Hate the Dodgers all you want, but that was probably the coolest thing that's going to happen in mlb all year.

Losing Hudson was tough, especially how he looks in SF. Counting out the Braves is like counting out St. Louis.

You ever read any biographies on Hank? Some of the letters he received before breaking the record were horrific. He talked about how scared shitless he was rounding the bases after breaking the record because who knew what the people storming the field were going to do?killeverything wrote:40 years ago today "Homerun King" Hank Aaron hit #715 to surpass Babe Ruth as the all time leader. Yeah, I read one in 8th or 9th grade that discussed the death threats he was sent, and one ( using hillbilly arithmetic ) that said "it was easier to hit the ball out of the park in Milwaukee and Atlanta because the air is thinner there." Then it went on to say shit like "that's the only reason you got to a white man's record. The air helped you." Or something similar. Disgusting really.johnk5150 wrote:You ever read any biographies on Hank? Some of the letters he received before breaking the record were horrific. The Northern Yankees, Boston is all alone in last place leaving the Yankers on top.
Dodgers are tied for first! Saying it now, I don't think the Dodgers win the division unless they pick up help before the line. Jansen has as many Saves and Blown Saves "2". Dee Gordon should be tested, no way he's playing like he is without help. Check his bat, drug test...I know it's 9 games, but it's Dee Gordon. Josh Beckett pitched 4 gave up 5, fist time on the mound in like a year and a half? He should be in a Cub's uni.
Atlanta shouldn't have much to worry about in their division, I dig Miami but no ones going to give the Braves and their stupid chant a run. It's Atlanta's division to lose.

Seattle is heating up and starting to play really good ball. Beavan pitches tonight so I expect a loss, but tommorrow it's the King @ Darvish. I'm meeting up with some people after class and watching that one. I think it's 5:05PST if y'all are interested.

ESPN POWER RANKINGS APRIL 14
#1 Los Angeles Dodgers after a series sweep at Chase Field, L.A. is now 5-0 against Arizona and 4-4 against any other team. They get three more games versus the D-backs this coming weekend. Most pleasant surprise so far: 2-0, 2.04 ERA of Dan Haren or .405/.439/.541 of Dee Gordon?
http://espn.go.com/mlb/powerrankings
Power Rankings this week
1. Los Angeles Dodgers
2. Milwaukee Brewers
3. Detroit Tigers
4. Tampa Bay Rays
5. St. Louis Cardinals
bunch of other teams then
12. NY Yankees
13 Boston Yankees
The New York Yankees took three out of four from the Red Sox Yankees this past weekend. Boston's 17th in MLB with 44 runs scored due to an awful .190 batting average with RISP.
-------------------------------------------------------------
I wouldn't pick the Dodgers as number 1 but I'll take it winning without Kershaw, Billingsley, Wilson and with Kemp, Crawford and Ellis in and out of the line up while winning with names like Haren and who the fuck is Dee Gordon leading the way. Again.. .405/.439/.541 from Dee Gordon? I said last year I never wanted to see Dee Gordon again. If it lasts the end of the world is near.
Milwaukee Brewers on the other hand have been on fire....9 game win streak.
The Brewers ran their winning streak to nine by finishing off a sweep of the Pirates on Sunday. They have the best run differential in the game, due in large part to the fact they lead the majors in ERA. They've already faced three playoff teams from 2013 and will welcome another starting Monday when the Cardinals
