Dodgers finally reel in the Giants to take the west and make it a race. With the help...

July 4th, Kershaw dominates, extends scoreless streak, Dodgers ace unscored upon in 36 innings after two-hit outin.

DENVER -- DJ LeMahieu singled in the third inning Friday night, and you almost expected the game to be stopped, the ball retrieved and sent directly to Cooperstown with his bat, spikes and cap.

It was the Rockies' first base hit off Clayton Kershaw in 13 innings, which included his June 18 no-hitter against them. And LeMahieu's was the only hit Colorado got until the seventh, as Kershaw pitched a two-hit shutout for eight innings, riding home runs from Yasiel Puig and Scott Van Slyke to another masterpiece victory, 9-0.

That extended Kershaw's scoreless-innings streak to 36, third-longest for a Los Angeles Dodger behind Orel Hershiser (59) and Don Drysdale (58). And the win extended the Dodgers' lead over the Giants to a season-high 1 1/2 games.

Schilling has a case from his postseason stats ( the same one that pre-PED knowledge Pettite had ), plus his work with Congress and MLBPA to rid baseball of roids. He does have a chance eventually.

Glavine was part of the Big 3 so I think he gets in before Schill, right or wrong.

Nope, back to .5. The extra inning walkoff changed that. The injuries to Pagan and Belt really fucked SF, but Belt is back and maybe they'll turn it around. Gonna be a helluva race, wait. I'm from there, when in Rome. "It's gonna be a hella race." Heh.

It's hard not to see LAD going all the way this year though. Aside from Kershaw making baseball history, the other guys on their pitching staff are kinda alright too.

Do you really wanna fuck with a Kershaw, Greinke, Ryu, and a rejuvenated Beckett ( always will be a fan of the guy ) staff in a short series? Shit, you don't want anything to do with that in a long series. Terrifying.

Glavine's being inducted this year, actually. Heck, even postseason aside (and I could care less about steroids in general), Schilling had about 20 more fWAR in 1100 fewer IP than Tommy.

Schilling averaged 211 Ks per 162 games, pitching in quite an offensive era in some great hitters' parks.

Forgot about Glavine. Schill won't go in until after Johnson, who is eligible in 2017 ( I believe ).

I just meant that Schill will get in eventually, but not before so many inarguable first ballot guys coming up will.

The All Star winners were announced with Oakland representing the most with 6.

Moss, Doolittle, Kazmir, Cespedes, Donaldson, and Norris.

That's fantastic, from COORS field I watched many games 15 rows up from the 3b side eying Beltre. Then I watched him have his best years ever only to leave the team. When a monster player does that to your team you feel like it's treason. Hate builds.
I think if Beltre went somewhere else then Seattle he'd have better numbers, he never seem to like to stay in one place for too long.

In 98 LA had: Mike Piazza, Gary Sheffield, Adrian Beltre, Raul Mondesi, Eric Karros, Paul Konerko and Eric Young on the roster along with Nomo and Ramon Martinez.
If only that group could have matured together. Instead LA broke up the team, gave a kabillion dollars to an old Kevin Brown and extended billions to a never once healthy Darren Dreifort.

Still, with Gary Sheffield, Adrian Beltre, Raul Mondesi and toss in Pedro I can't imagine a coach who could have kept all those heads together.

Never have been a fan of Buck, but he hits the nail on the head here. Lackey is out of line to comment on PED use, since he was once a member of the Red Sox

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter responded to Boston Red Sox pitcher John Lackey's loud "no comment" on slugger Nelson Cruz after Saturday night's game, telling ESPN Radio on Sunday that "everybody needs to make sure that their own backyard is clean" when it comes to performance-enhancing drugs.

After the game, when asked to comment on Cruz's big game, Lackey made a not-so-veiled comment on the Orioles slugger's past suspension for PEDs.

"I'm not going to comment on him," Lackey said. "I've got nothing to say about him. There are some things I'd like to say, but I'm not going to. You guys forget pretty conveniently about stuff."

Sunday, when asked about Lackey's comment, Showalter said on ESPN Radio's "Mike Lupica Show" that he didn't read Lackey's comments but was told about them.

"There's so many insinuations, quite frankly, about people in every club. You usually don't hear those comments after a shutout or something," Showalter said.

But the manager added that Lackey might want to rethink commenting about other players unless he knows for sure that none of his teammates have used PEDs.

"He might want to be careful," Showalter said.

Mariners DFA John Buck

The Cy Young race in the AL is looking great this season. Tanaka is more Yu Darvish than he is Dice K, Darvish is Darvish, Price is putting up absurd numbers, and the King is pitching like the King.

In fact I believe Felix will go all the way this year. Since May 18 Felix has held batters to a .170BAA, 1HR, 45H and 11 walks with 85K. That's out of 279 batters faced.

The NL Cy has no room for discussion, because Kershaw is making history.

Looks like D. Ortiz has a few things to get off his chest. Poor guy. That "free pass" he received doesn't quite satisfy him.

David Ortiz has defended himself in the face of rumors and innuendo about performance-enhancing drug use in the past.

On Monday night, the Boston Red Sox slugger went for the jugular.

Ortiz, in response to a segment he said he saw earlier in the day on MLB Network, called the network's commentators out for their analysis about recent comments over Orioles outfielder Nelson Cruz, after they said Ortiz might have gotten a "free pass" in MLB's Biogenesis investigation because he had been on a list of players who apparently tested positive in 2003 MLB survey testing.

Cruz was voted into next week's All-Star Game less than a year removed from a 50-game, Biogenesis-related suspension.

"In this country, nobody gets a free pass," Ortiz said, according to WEEI.com of Boston. "He wants to make it sound like I got a free pass because nobody can point fingers at me directly. But the reason why I got that fake [expletive] free pass that he's saying is because they pointed fingers at me with no proof.

"It's easier to do it that way than having something that they can say, 'Yes, you did this, you did that.' My [expletive], I call straight up bull. Let me tell you. You don't get no free pass here, especially a guy like me. I don't get no free pass. That free pass B.S. that they want to talk about over there, they can shove it up their [expletive]."

Ortiz's teammate, pitcher John Lackey, made his feelings about Cruz fairly clear over the weekend, saying, "There are some things I'd like to say, but I'm not going to. You guys forget pretty conveniently about stuff."

It was in talking about the Lackey and Showalter comments that MLB Network commentators apparently brought up Ortiz.

"What pisses me off is the whole thing about, why does my name got to be mentioned in that? What did I have to do with that? I saw on MLB the guys talking about it, and then they brought my name up, and one of the guys said that I got a free pass on that," Ortiz said. "It was the Lackey and Showalter thing, going back and forth. Showalter didn't say anything about me."

Ortiz continued, having his say in a 317-word soliloquy to WEEI.com.

"That's reality," he said. "You don't use the words that I get a free pass. You don't get a free pass on this. MLB don't play that B.S. MLB don't play that. There's a reason why I've been drug tested like eight times and we're not even at the break. Is that a free pass? There's a reason why I've been tested like 40 times since they approved the policy, the drug policy. Is that a free pass? They can get that free pass and shove it up their [expletive]."

Hey dumbass, the 2003 test wasn't specifically for steroids. A lot of players on that list turned up positive that weren't using banned substances ( think Gio Gonzalez and Biogenesis, used them, not for PEDs ). Ortiz stated numerous times show me the results and what I took that triggered it. Funny how he hasn't been popped since. In fact there are some players on that list that never were on it to begin with. Not Arod, of course, but others. Idiot.

Man, the A's are fucking tough this year. You gotta kinda root for em'. Perennial underdog with no budget and a genius GM at the helm. Them winning it all wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

Tanaka was roughed up for a career high 11 hits and 5ER today. He is a lot better than I was expecting him to be, but ( without basing it statistically ) I was thinking around the ASB is when teams will start to figure him out. I still agree with the projections that have him as a #3. He gives up a HR every game, I think that's going to start happening even more consistently.

Josh Beckett went on the DL with a hip strain. I was pleasantly surprised to see Beckett have a good season. Fuck LA, but I will always be a fan of that guy. 2003 FTW.

The final spots for the All Star game are starting to close and finally a deserving player ( Chris Sale ) is in the lead. The other selections are the usual most popular, but less deserving. Capt. Gold Gloves is starting at SS of course.

Holy shit.

Masashiro Tanaka heads to NY to have MRI on right arm.

Do you think it's a public relations move? Like "Tanaka was lit up, so there has to be something wrong."
I hate seeing injuries to any player ( even MFY ), but the timing seems fishy to me.

Brandon Phillips out "a while" with thumb ( ligament? ) injury.

I didn't see the Brewers being so good this season. Everyone saw it except me apparently  , anyways these two DL stints for Cincy and St. Louis basically promises Milwaukie wins the Central.

Great piece about Yu Darvish's interpreter, Kenji Nimura; the article touches on several aspects of Japanese players in MLB:

http://grantland.com/features/yu-darvis ... japan-mlb/

Loved this bit:
In Whiting’s 1989 book You Gotta Have Wa, the definitive history of American ballplayers in Japan, an entire chapter is filled with foibles of interpreters and their athletes. One interpreter knows so little about baseball that he mistakenly believes “take a pitch” means “swing away.” Other interpreters act as spies for the team, reporting back on the late-night activities of the gaijin (foreigners). Censorship is a constant issue. “If a gaijin says something like ‘I don’t give a fuck!’ well, I say, ‘I’ll try harder,’ instead,” one interpreter tells Whiting. “It avoids trouble.”

Tanaka has a partially torn UCL!!!

Will rehab for 6 weeks, so no TJ ( yet ). Remember how well avoiding shoulder surgery in favor of rest has worked so far ( Schilling 2008 ).

Clayton Kershaw's scoreless inning streak ends at 41 with a Chase Headley HR in the 6th.

Herscheizer: 59
Drysdale: 58
Kershaw: 41

Kershaw had his ERA dropped down to .175, Pedro Martinez in 2000 was at .174. I thought for sure we would never see something like Pedro again. The context is slightly different, but what Kershaw is doing is amazing.

King Felix vs. Adam Wainwright for Allstar game starters.

Wainwright is a great pitcher and the NL manager ( St.l mgr. Matheny ) gets the pick, but does he deserve it over Kershaw?

Two of the King's competition are out. Price didn't get enough rest and Tanaka's on the DL. The King is dominating the AL in almost every category so I believe Farrell would have had him start anyways.

*( trivia: King Felix is the first Venezulan pitcher to start the ASG. Venezulan catcher Salvador Perez is his batterymate )

I'm kind of a Wainwright fan, but Kershaw is setting mlb records this year. Do you think his selection was Matheny's team loyalty or do you think they're so close in ability it doesn't warrant discussion?

Who'd you pick?

Two years in a row Kershaw was overshot. 41 scoreless innings, a no hitter and more strike outs in 42 less innings.
Kershaw.... 11W - 2L 1.78era SO 126 WHIP .83 Innings 96
Wainwright 12W - 4L 1.83era SO 115 WHIP .91 Innings 138

Harvey was a sympathy pick last year at least Wainwright is a valid debate.

Aside from Matheny being the manager where he kind of has to pick his boy. Wainwright has pitched in five more games than Kershaw, giving him 42 more IP. Considering how close their numbers are it's pretty impressive.

Anyone other than Wainwright's coach as the NL mgr. I would pick Kershaw. The scoreless streak, the ERA, the Koufax/Pedro-esque season. I would have to go Clayton.

There is no wrong choice between the two though.

------------------------------------------------------------

Puig was 0-7 in the derby. A lot of people predicted him to win it too.
The derby has a tendency to fuck with a hitter's timing, so I'm not too fond of it personally.

Anybody care to predict how MLB will honor Jeter tonight?

Heard that for each at bat Bob Shepherd will be announcing Jeter

Heard another story that in the top of the 1st only Jeter will be standing on the field so the fans and players can applaud for him

Also heard that Jeter will be asked to play all 9 innings as a tribute but that
seems very unlikely.
