Weaver - mediocre at best now
Richards - potential ace
Wilson - fuck me, he's our #3
Santiago - potential to be a good #3 type
Shoemaker - streaky, but should be good for a .500 record and around a 4.15 ERA.

Given how the Angels offense has shut down since the ASB, that ain't good.
Dude, with how Seattle is starting to play up to their potential can you imagine a one game playoff with Richards vs. King? That would be amazing.
Tin00can wrote:Is there any team that hasn't lost at least one pitcher to TJ surgery this year?
TJ surgery? Yes, big time pitching injuries? No.

I remember it being discussed, or the question asked "what about the rise in TJ surgeries?" I can't recall precisely what the conclusion was and should look into it. Maybe the rise in injuries and rise of pitching dominance is related to all the breaking pitches.

Then again what about the first time pitching ruled in the Gibson, Koufax days? Surely this has been researched before by SABR or Bill James, I'm going to check into this. It will give me a project to fuck with on the side waiting for fall term to start.

What LA player didn't fuck Alyssa, I forgot how the introductions began but I believe it started Mike Piazza. Maybe she was hired by The Dodgers as an incentive prize. I'd strike the fuck out of Trout for a shot at her.

I'm sure he'd understand....Mr Trout, I'm a huge fan, you're a guy and I'm a normal guy. We're talking about Alyssa Milano, it's for charity!
If that didn't work I'd stick him with a shot of morphine or threaten to burn his house down.

*edit, quick search - Carl Pavano, Barry Zito, Brad Penny, Mike Piazza

Mike isn't listed but I remember when they went out for a brief time.
He probably introduced her to Penny from there.
Alyssa went on record after dating all three pitchers in a row that she's done with athletes and how much shit she got for it. I get a crap yet players like "Derek Jeter gets away with dating starlet after starlet"

Physical contact is part of the game, so is getting hit. Always has been, should always be. If Nolan Ryan was on the mound he would have killed him.

Of course there's a chance. I haven't ever heard his name mentioned before, but anything is possible. If he did anything it would have been the use of greenies because of the time period he was in. When his career continued to his later ages I doubt he would have had any desire to use PEDs.

Ryan's resolve is the stuff of folklore. Especially with how much of a badass he was in his 40s, a couple of no-hitters and Robin Ventura? The guy was an actual cowboy in real life. Wrestling steers and shit in the offseason. Any later evidence of him using PEDs to extend his legend would suck.

Texas benefited heavily with him at the helm and now with him joining his son and Jeff Luhnow in Houston, the Astros will too. Nolan Ryan is really something of a legend and I couldn't see him using that. Canseco ( who was right about everyone he wrote about ) was around Ryan when he had dealing with the Rangers and Nolan's name was never mentioned.

It's funny how Jose fucking Canseco apparently speaks the truth.

King Felix extends his scoreless streak of 7IP with 2 runs allowed or less to 16 consecutive. While sporting a 1.95ERA and tightening his hold on the AL Cy Young into a death grip.

Oh shit  whoops.

Kansas City takes 1st from Detroit. Verlander lifted in first with sore shoulder. He's heading for MRI tomorrow. The Tigers can still contend if he misses time, but man, I don't think anyone saw them looking beatable.

I was ready to hand them the WS trophy before the season started. With the addition of Price they're technically even better. Wild.

*edit*
Felix Hernandez now leads all mlb in WAR at 6.3. The HR he gave up to Batista is going to fuck with his FiP a little bit, but that's pretty impressive for a pitcher.

Doubt it with possible exception towards the end.

I've mentioned I have a friend who played at ASU with Bonds then was drafted into the rangers farm team as a pitcher before having Tommy John then converted into a catcher.
This was before the public PED talk and the mlb steroid congressional hearings. One of my questions was about pitchers and steroids because after my experience I felt PED's would hinder pitchers rather then help.
Throwing has more to do with tendons, ligaments, elbows, shoulders and joints when steroids builds muscles that puts more stress on those joints and tendons and probably increase injury.

He's words, there was basically two lines, one for pitchers and one for the rest. He said he knew pitchers who experimented but not many that stuck with PED's because they would bulk up, lose velocity and mess with their delivery.
In his words, most pitchers didn't dabble with steroids and when they did it was shot term.

Then later on PED's became more refined and more pitchers started coming up positive, pitchers like Mike Hampton.....Who was guilty just by looking at him.

Looking at Ryan's history and record then at what he did in the late 80s at the age of 40 and 42...
I'd say Ryan didn't mess around with steroids but wouldn't be surprised if he mildly juiced at the end when PED's was ramped. With that being said, with Ryan, I'm just going to say no. Because he's, Nolan Fucking Ryan.

Ryan didn't take steroids, Nolan Ryan took Advil.

I'd say Ryan was beyond reproach. He certainly didn't LOOK like a guy who was juicing. Didn't have that Clemens/Bonds "juice bloat" thing going.

Manny Machado sprained his right knee while hitting a broken-bat grounder and left the game in the Orioles' 11-3 win over the Yankees.
The team described the injury as a right knee sprain and said he would undergo an MRI Tuesday. Manny has been on a terror up till this point.

Talk about a blooper reel in the Orioles Yankees game. Keystone baseball.

But hey it all ironed out in the wash. Yanks are 7 games out now.

I don't think his credibility went out the window, although the guy is a buffoon everything he said was true. He wrote that book to get back at baseball because no team would hire him to limp to 400 HRs. It was his own doing.

IMO, Canseco has told the truth more often than Bud Selig since the book was released.
I'm glad Canseco wrote that book and named names.

I'm with ya on that, Machado.

Justin Verlander to miss 1or 2 starts, MRI reveals no structural damage so no DL stint.

King Felix ( 6.2 ) and Hisashi Iwakuma ( 2.6 ) lead mlb in combined fWAR (8.8 ).
Robinson Cano ( 4.8 ) and Kyle Seager ( 4.4 ) have the highest fWAR in mlb among position player teammates ( 9.2 ).
If Seattle makes the playoffs ( first time since 2001 [116 wins] ) there is a good case to be made for King Felix to win the AL MVP. I know it's rhetorical to some for a pitcher to win the MVP, but it does warrant discussion in some cases. This possibly being one of them.

20 years ago today, the Expos were for all intents and purposes killed off. This was the mortal wound, and they slowly bled out for the next decade:

For anyone who hasn't done so, you gotta read Jonah Keri's Expos book... if for no other reason his essay on why Tim Raines must be in the HOF.

I support Tim Raines induction too. Unfortunately he just falls short of the requirements.

I always supported Jim Rice's induction who also just fell short. The problem is is when Rice was finally inducted it opened a can of worms, so to speak with the Hall Of Fame becoming the Hall Of The Very Good Fan Favorites. I now think Rice shouldn't have got in.

While I still support Raines inclusion, it's a slippery slope. Because of lowering the Hall standards we have guys like Chicago fave Ron fucking Santo in the Hall. He was a fave and an All Star ( which means he was popular ) and that's it. If the standards are lowered to an All Star game popularity contest then every single player that has played for the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Braves EVER will be inducted.

It's a catch-22.

*edit

How many times can you use "induction" and "inducted" when talking about the Hall.
I'm up to 3. Thesauruses are for suckers.

If you, or anyone, reads Keri's essay you'll be convinced. It's centered around a bit of a Billy Beane, small ball, mentality. Basically, if a walk is as good as a single, and you factor in is insane amount of walks, he's easily a "3000 hit" guy. He also speaks to his safe stealing percentage, which is better than important HOF'ers, and may be the best in history.

An excerpt from an old blog, but he goes further in his Expos book:

Raines’ worthiness has been documented at length. He’s the best pure base stealer of all-time, swiping 808 bases at an 85% success rate — easily the highest rate of success for any base stealer at or near that frequency. He also reached base more times in his career than Roberto Clemente, Tony Gwynn or Lou Brock. Replace 400 of Raines’ walks with singles and he has 3,000 hits and strolls into the Hall. Or just replace, say, 600 Raines walks with 400 singles and 200 outs — he’s an inferior player at that point, but he still has his 3,000 hits, and he’s in...

MLB owners set to vote between MLB COO Rob Manfred and Red Sox chairman Tom Werner to replace piece of shit commish Bud Selig. It goes down to those two unless the vote is deadlocked ( which is a really cool way to say "tied" if ya think about it ).

I remember the rumors that Dave Dombrowski ( Tigers President, CEO, & GM ) could possibly replace Selig. I was all for that. Werner was part of the Red Sox new ownership in 2002 with Henry and Lucchino. To my knowledge Werner was more responsible for the PR aspect with Boston. You gotta admit his time there has been pretty successful, but I'm not sure how that would translate into commissioner.

I don't know enough about Manfred to have a viable opinion on him yet. I do know this though, he WILL be better than Selig.

*edit

I'm going to edit this throughout the search for a new commish.

Manfred receives 22 votes falling just one short of election. The committee has taken a break currently. The discussion is if Werner's supporters can rally enough behind him. Manfred was considered the "heir apparent" to replace Selig.

Manfred worked with Selig previously so I'm kind of down with not having ANYTHING of Selig remaining when he leaves.

*edit II
Rob Manfred elected new mlb commish.
The original 8 teams originally opposed were Boston ( duh ), Toronto, Oakland, LAAAAAA, Washington, CHW, Cincinnatti, and Arizona. It is unclear which team ( teams? ) changed their vote to elect him. Hint: I promise you it wasn't Boston

I find it funny that the Cubs weren't opposed to his induction. I'm not sure if the election process only concerns team owners, because if the GM and Presidents have any say then why didn't Theo and Hoyer ( both of who worked with/under Werner for years ) support his election?

That's pretty telling IMO.
