A Question For The Weight Lifters...

Does smoking pot actually increase the amount of estrogen in the male body while body building?
It didn't sound quite right to me but then again, I don't know a whole helluva lot about body building and nutrition.
I'm trying to learn though.
TIA

Gonna have to go with "no" on this one. Urban myth!

It's true. I used to be a hardcore smoking bitch but I quit and I formed into a man.

I don't know why you didn't just PM me.
The answer is no. Alcohol on the other hand....
You can smoke your motherfucking pot, it will maybe have a slight impact on protein synthesis, especially if you're mixing with tobacco, but nothing to be too worried about.
It will be hard to eat good meals on time when you're baked though. A pack of Oreos make much more sense when you're stoned than chicken breasts or a can of tuna.
Anyway bodybuilding is for faggots. If I ever catch you on the peck-deck machine or doing wrist curls I'm gonna hit you with a plate, butt pirate.

Fortunately for me, I don't snack on junk anymore. Celery sticks, raw broccoli and fresh spinach for snacks is good by me. I need as much fiber and whole grains as I can get right now.
For three years I've been sitting on my ass, not doing a god-damned thing and I'm sick of the extra 50 lbs. I've put on. Plus, quitting smoking didn't do much for my metabolism.
I'm not really looking to build my body per se; just cut the fat and tone what I've got. I'd like to have a bit more muscle too but nothing like Mr. Olympia. I like being able to wipe my own ass, thank you.
My wife and I joined Gold's Gym two weeks ago and it actually feels great to work that sweat first thing in the morning.
Thanks for answering my question Mullet.
Any other tips any of you guys can give me would be cool too. Thanks.

If you workout first thing in the morning, be aware that spinal compression and flexion can be extra dangerous because of the increased fluid content in the intervertebral discs in the first hour or two after waking up.
Just something you should know, safety wise.

I can't tell if this is a joke, but toning is all about diet. High reps with lighter weights is good for building up muscular endurance but that's about it.
Heavier weights will probably be better for toning. If you're on an caloric deficit trying to lose belly fat and shit, it will help you hold on to your muscle mass (assuming diet is in check).

Why would he want to lift heavier weights.
He is overweight. He should be more into the aerobic stuff.
You obviously know your stuff, but wouldnt putting on muscle mass
make him more susceptible to becoming obese latter on as he gets older;when he stops weightlifting etc?.

Hopefully, I'm not gonna stop. I intend to get to an ideal weight and look then keep it up.
I know I gotta get more whole grains, green leafy vegetables, and lean protein into my life. Can you guys give me any tips about diet?
What does a typical lean diet consist of for a whole day?

Well lifting heavier actually burns more calories
during lifting and
after. Your metabolic rate will be higher HOURS after lifting.
And it will not make him gain muscle mass unless he's eating above maintenance. What it will do is help him maintain lean muscle, which will help to increase his metabolism permanently.

It would maybe be a good idea to have a carb cut off hour.
Breakfast: Egg whites and a shake with oats, milk, apple or pear.
Mid morning: Quark or Greek yoghurt or some kind of fresh cheese.
Lunch: I know you yanks like to eat sandwiches for lunch. Around here it's normal to eat, I don't know, grilled fish with carrots, potatoes and cauliflower, and throw in some olive oild. Or octopus with rice or something. Since you're a pirate maybe you won't have a problem getting fish, I imagine.
5 PM meal: Maybe a tuna or chicken salad, or a protein shake if you want to spend money on that shit. You'll probably look like an idiot eating that at work at that time. How about a dark bread sandwich? Throw some tomato, lettuce, chicken...be creative.
Dinner: Turkey steak with broccolli or spinach. You'll want to avoid carbs like rice and pasta after 6 PM.
Before bed snack: Cottage cheese or quark (or a protein shake).
That's about it. Like you said, go for whole grains, green vegetables and protein, specially from fish and white meat. Red meat is good if you wanna bulk up but since you want to lose body maybe you'd like to avoid it...
I never really had to go on a diet to lose body fat and I'm not a specialist so take it for what it's worth. The juggernaut is probably more into this.
Edited to finish the post.

No toxins (if you must, pot is better than booze).
Lots of cardio
Workout first thing in the am on an almost empty stomach (bowl of oatmeal and an orange is fine)
Include in your lifting some circuit drills.
If you get really ambitious, Plyometrics as well.

I agree about plyos, also great for general athleticism.
What do you think about barbell complexes? I been wanting to give this a try to improve my conditioning, DeFranco style.

Very good.
However, I think that guy is a little premature.
It's hard to tell with his wardrobe, but he doesn't look like someone who's been at it for a long time.
The reason I bring this up is because every single lift in that example presents an injury risk in itself, and the risk increases with each motion he moves onto.
You have to make damn good and sure you have damn good muscle/stabilizer strength/endurance, plus be in great cardiovascular shape, before you fuck with that kind of thing because it's amazingly easy to get tired out quickly and tired = sloppy = injured.
Stick with circuits, basic supersets (21s are about as crazy as you should get in terms of volume for a while) and finishers for at least 6 months before attempting to add this as part of your core workout. Devoted to cardio all along the way goes without saying.
If you have enough hours during the week, if you can mix in plyo as well, that will do nothing but help.

Well DeFranco deals mostly with athletes so strenght and contitioning is their main goal.
About the complexes, starting out with an empty barbell would probably be a good idea, and build up from there. Of course you have to make sure you have perfect form but that goes for any exercise and especially squats and deadlifts.
You're probably right though, a noob will most likely experience some form breakdown pretty fast doing those complexes.

Well, it all depends what you're doing ie what do you consider working out ?
Myself, I do one part per day over 5 days.
On my "off days" I do general maintenance stuff, no heavy lifting.
You shouldn't lift any more than 45 minutes, 1 hour at the very very most.
But then, you can technically do heavy lifting twice per day if you're loading enough recovery, which I assume you're not and won't be, so forget that.
It's hard to give you any specific direction because I don't know your body type, your genetics, your athletic history, your injury history, your range of motion etc. So it's hard to give specific instructions, not to mention dangerous.
Let me just say this - if you're a fat ass, or are even trying to lose weight because you feel like you're fat, cardio first thing in the am, on as close to an empty stomach as possible. Don't eat garbage. Don't eat any portions larger than your fist. Avoid all things white (except chicks, and even then....). Oh, and make sure you go 12 hours without eating when it comes to bed time. If you get up at 6 am, eat no later than 6 pm.
Sugar is your enemy, glutamine is your friend.

Juggs you seem pretty set on plyo's, is there any reason. Average joes dont have a need to train fast twitch muscle fibre, so do you just like them as a cardio thing or what.

You'd be surprised how often the average joe might need fast twitch fibers.
I do them because I am trying to stave off speed loss as long as possible.
As for average joe applications of fast twitch, well, there are lots but the #1 option that comes to mind is if you have a kid and he starts running toward traffic, you stand a better chance of catching him with plyo training than without.
That is an extreme example, of course, but the one lesson I took from my time in the boy scouts was "be prepared".
Plus, it allows you to perform better at sports and, even if it's merely rec league, you perform better = you are in better shape and vice versa.
So, if you have kids, you can keep up, teach them properly without tiring out etc.

Thank you Juggernaut and Mullet.
One of my biggest problems is the whole not eating for twelve hours. I'll be starting that tomorrow. No more food after 7:30pm.
I did my freebie one hour training session the other day and most of it was cardio. I've been trying to repeat it since. A lot of jumping jacks then push-ups then back to JJ's. Punching the body bag for a minute then inclined wide spread push-ups then back to the bag and other stuff. Lather, rinse repeat. A few exercises with 25 lb. dumb bells too.
I've been pretty good about not having too much to eat before training. Half an apple and a glass of Noxipro. That stuff is awesome! You almost don't want to get off of the treadmill! After I'm done I have a granola bar and a protein shake. I'm using Casein. Lunch is usually a salad with chicken or a chicken sandwich, snack is some trail mix and fruit then another salad for dinner. Sounds healthy to me but I'm thinking my portion control is out the window.
A little about my form. I'm 6' 5" and weigh 250. Three years ago I was 204. I had a physical job that kept me on my feet for 8-14 hours a day, six days a week. I didn't really need to go to the gym unless I wanted to tone up but never did. Just quit smoking in September so my heart's slowed down along with my metabolism. When tested with the hand-held fat-o-meter at the gym, I think I measured 27%. Yeah, I'm a fat ass but nowhere NEAR Lickety. As soon as I've got some extra money, I want to get a trainer. In the meantime, I'm relying on friends and knowledgeable acquaintances so, thanks again guys.

Funny I just recently started to incorporate sprints into my routine with that same goal. First time I tried I couldn't believe how much speed I lost since my early twenties, it was pathetic.
Regarding your advise of 12 hours without eating, you don't think a small portion of protein (casein for example) before bed would help to maintain lean muscle mass without contributing to fat gains?

Of course.
However, it depends on what your goals are.
If you are trying to lose weight, stick to water, maybe some protein in the water.
If you are trying to bulk up, it solid protein with some glutamine.
Regarding speed loss, in my early 20s I peaked at 4.48 in the 40 and 10.84 in the 100. In my early 30s my peaks were 4.41 and 10.76.
I just was timed this past summer and the times are now 4.53, 10.91.
Sucks to be aging, but then, I also weigh 55 pounds more than I did in my early-mid 20s so that's how I rationalize it.
P.S. I pretend to myself that it is not age, in spite of the fact my times improved as my weight increased, before they started to drop off.
