Raiders to release Russell

Reading his list of accomplishments is comical.

The Oakland Raiders are preparing to release quarterback JaMarcus Russell but have to await the final word from owner Al Davis before they can do so, according to sources.

Russell is on the books for $9.45 million this season, including $3 million in guaranteed money. Since trading for former Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell on Saturday, the Raiders have studied Russell's contract and tried to figure out ways to release him to save the organization some money.

Russell JaMarcus Russell has been paid more than $5 million per win, more than $2 million per touchdown pass and more than $100,000 per completion.

If he gets the $3 million (and sources expect that he will), Russell will have been paid $39 million since going to the team as a first-round pick in 2007.

The Raiders showed their confidence in Campbell by extending his contract through 2011, giving him a $4.5 million deal that season on top of the $3.14 million he is owed this season.

The Raiders have a minicamp Friday and it's possible Russell could be released before then. If Davis doesn't give the go-ahead to release him before Friday, Russell might attend the minicamp, but the team might not let him practice, fearing that he would suffer an injury and leave the team liable for the entire $9.45 million in salary.

Russell, who will turn 25 in August, has won only seven of his 25 starts as the Raiders extended an NFL-worst streak to seven straight seasons with at least 11 losses in 2009. He has completed just 52.1 percent of his passes in his career with 18 touchdowns, 23 interceptions, 15 lost fumbles and a passer rating of 65.2.

That means Russell has been paid more than $5 million per win, more than $2 million per touchdown pass and more than $100,000 per completion.

Russell's tenure in Oakland got off to a rough start and never got much better. He held out in his first season, and did not sign a contract until after the first game of the regular season. That made his rookie season almost a complete loss, as he started only one game.

He showed some signs of progress in his second season, especially in winning the final two games of the year against Houston and Tampa Bay.

But the problems with his work ethic and weight never disappeared, and his third season was an utter disaster. He was fined for being overweight when he showed up at training camp. He then put together one of the worst seasons in recent memory for an NFL quarterback. He completed 48.8 percent of his passes, with three touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 50.0 passer rating that was the lowest since Ryan Leaf, Bobby Hoying and Craig Whelihan all finished below 50 in 1998.

This is why fans should run teams.

I don't know a single person that thought drafting him was a good idea. Yet, they did it anyway. Serves them right.

Sooner or later the NFL should adopt an NFL Rookie salary cap.

Imagine if the #1 pick(Russell) only made a few hundred thousand dollars over 3 yrs. The amount of pressure for him to succeed, excel, live up to expectations would be much less.
Also, the player might have more motivation to work hard and play well, so he can sign a much more lucrative contract in the future.

The structure today is setting up the top picks for failure.
What the player does in college suddenly entitles the player to riches. Sometime more than an established player in the NFL will make/has made.
Very unfair!

There should be a hard slot in all drafts. Fuck guys holding out. Either sign or you're not eligible for the draft for 3 years.

Us Detroit Lions fans thank Alice for drafting him. That moron Millen would have taken him over Calvin Johnson.

Nothing would please me more than seeing everyone affiliated with that team burned in a fire.

This guy is lucky that he's not a gayder anymore.

Remember when Davis fired Lane Kiffen and mocked Kiffen for not thinking Russell was a good football player?

You're kidding right? the guy ate himself out of even being able to play his position, If anyone gives his fat ass another shot it'll be on the o-line, other than that maybe the guy can become a superstar in the next Nathans hot dog eating championship. Nothing great about a lazy glutton like Russell Who pissed his career away.

Yup, being a Raider fan I wasn't behind that pick from the start. Even his highlight reel didn't impress unless it was in practice tossing missiles over a goal post.

Maybe we'll all get another exciting press conference out of this deal.

Russell remindes me of Shawn Kemp. Minus the talent and the kids Kemp produced.

Hahaha!!! I seem to remember Mel Kiper saying that Russell had skills comparable to John Elway, and that he'd end up being an elite QB in the NFL. Wrong & wrong.

I agree with not paying these college schmucks tons of money until they have proved themselves, but only if the money saves goes to reduce ticket prices for fans.

These billionaire owners don't need to save money.

Kemp at one point was my favorite player right behind reggie lewis at the time, You're right the difference is Kemp at least put his talents on display before fucking it up, Russell better catch on somewhere and win some games or he'll shoot right to the top of the NFL all times biggest bust list. I don't see it happening reports are the dude is 300+ pounds, it's obvious the guy has no discipline.

A good ending to this story is Russell being out of the league by 2011.

The problem is he has all the money he needs. He was paid as if he was a pro-bowl caliber NFL QB.

Let him get up to 400 lbs. Who gives a shit!!!

If he gets released I can't see a team picking the guy up even for cheap, who wants a 300 pound 3rd stringer who'll more than likley get even fatter after he's released? The only way the dumb ass gets another shot is if he gets his waist way down and impresses a team, than he can carry a clipboard.

Hardest thing to judge on a player, heart at the next level. J-Russ has the heart of a KC Chief fan and just as stupid.

The Browns wanted him too. Phil Savage was enthralled and enamored with him. Words can not express my joy that Phil Savage is now gone.............

ESPN's "Outside The Lines" is doing a story on Raider fans hatred of Russell this Sunday morning. The write up is hilarious!

There were plenty of people who thought that was a good pick, they just won't admit it now. he basically got picked by having a huge bowl game against notre dame. everybody killed their defense that year and the last 5 years. What he did in that game was nothing special.

To think he got picked before Joe Thomas, Calvin Johnson and Adrian Peterson is unreal.

Was there a line of teams that were salivating at the chance to pick Russell?
Not sure, but those who were obviously have been let go of their jobs
since
He has already been paid 36 million. Will the Raiders keep him on the team so they can pay him another 6 million?
The Raiders are the one team dumb enough to do exactly that.

How would i know that? How would any of us know that? I do know that most teams would love a guy who can throw the ball 75 yards on a rope. Look how many chances Jeff george got.

The fact is, the Raiders weren't the only team interested.

Just like ryan leaf, Tony mandarich and Heath Shuler has other suitors. I think Utah said it best. It's obvious the kid has no heart.
