Why would an NFL player(Favre) have surgery in mid-May?

So Favre got hurt in January and waited until mid-May to get his surgery. Don't most guys go under the knife in March so they can be far enough along to participate in training camp? That is if they care enough about their team and teammates to show up. Having the QB skip out on camp is a great way to help the new guys learn the offense. Just another episode in the selfish me-first legacy of good old Bert.

Of course the dork is selfish.
The Vikings were on record as saying that Bret could take as long as he wants to make up his mind about wanting to play in 2010.
The moron took until mid-May to finally decide he wanted to play.
The goof believes the NFL revolves around him.
Very sad and unreal that he would put himself over 52 other players, coaches, front office personnel, etc...

Mankato MN, where they have training camp, is a shitty town. It would suck even worse to have to stay in the dorms at the college, which is what they do. Having surgery now, will give him just enough time to be good to go for the season, yet miss training camp.

So he's above everyone else on the team and is "too good" for training camp. How does Brett get away with this, but Allen Iverson is still scoffed at over his "practice" remarks?

The town shouldn't matter. They aren't there to goof around, they are there to get ready for the season. Even if Favre knows the offense inside-out he still has new teammates that will benefit by him being there so they can get on the same page. Brady and Manning - two of the better QB's over the past decade or so with 6 SB appearances and 4 rings between them - always stress the importance of mini camps and training camps and will stay late to give teammates extra practice reps so they can be ready when the season starts. But Favre won't even give his receivers and running backs the benefit of normal pre-season reps. Selfish prick.

Oh I definitely think he thinks he's above everybody else too. But it was that exact same senario last season, and mgmt let him get away with it. Unfortuneatly, we're so desaperate for a ring, we'll let him do it again this yer.

Brady has never missed a camp except for the year he was recovering from an injury. And even then he was still at camp but just not able to fully participate until the end.

He was working out in California when the team was in Foxboro.
Then there was the skipping out on practices to be with his family in a desperate attempt to repair his image.
