Report: Former Bruins Coach Pat Burns Dies
BOSTON (WBZ) ―

Former Bruins coach Pat Burns poses with his wife Lynne during the NHL Presenters Welcome Reception at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 17, 2009.

Former Bruins coach Pat Burns died Friday, after a long battle with lung and colon cancer, according to the Toronto Star.

He was 58 years old.

Burns was at his home in Magog, Quebec and had refused chemotherapy treatment, according to the paper.

Burns, who won a Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 2003, won 501 games from 1988-2004.

He coached the Bruins from 1997 until he was fired in 2000.

He was forced to leave coaching because of the colon cancer, and when he was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, he opted against treatment.

They are now posting retractions in some places, but some sources are saying that they have confirmed he passed away.

Word around town is that he's not well (a huge understatement, I know) and that he's returned to Quebec to start saying goodbye to people. However, he's hanging in there.

Burns has called TSN, and the English and French all-sports radio stations in Montreal to let everyone know he's not dead.

From TSN.ca:
In contrast to several erroneous reports earlier in the day, former NHL head coach Pat Burns is alive,

Burns phoned TSN on Friday.

"Here we go again," said the three-time NHL coach of the year. "They're trying to kill me before I'm dead. I come to Quebec to spend some time with my family and they say I'm dead. I'm not dead, far (expletive) from it. They've had me dead since June. Tell them I'm alive. Set them straight."

A report on Thursday suggested that Burns' condition had taken a turn for the worse.

The 58-year old has returned home to Magog, Quebec to be with his family.

Bob McKenzie's blog from TSN. A very long read, but a great one:
