31 years ago today the US college kids made sure Lake Placid wasn't calm at all. Nothing like that will ever happen again.
This quote says it all. RIP Herb Brooks.

"Their eyes were bright, their eyes were burning, It was team." - Russian hockey player Sergei Makarov, on the US kids after they beat the Soviets

Miracle is the only movie I went to see in the theatre more than once.

As a 12 year old I had seen a couple of Hartford Whalers games, but never took an interest in hockey. That Olympic run was must-see TV. "Do you believe in miracles!?" I have never believed in miracles since then, except for Bret Michaels amazing recuperative powers...

I was 8 and it changed my life.

I was at my grandma's house, and I will never forget the smile on her face. I will take that to my grave.

I actually prefer the HBO Documentary to the movie.

I wonder if HBO plans to re-air the documentary again this week

The doc is awesome. It's morr about the players, while the movie is more about Herbie.
You should read The Boys Of Winter. It's better than both. I read it once a year.

I love the doc too.

I can't remember if that's the interview where Mike Euruzione levels with the interviewer and says "after the Russia game, we were celebrating and Herb walked in and said - if you lose tomorrow (against Finland) you'll take it to your fuckin' graves"!

Awesome, and that was surely the truth.

The 1981 made for tv film "Miracle On Ice" played on Sportsnet the other night.Other than Karl Malden looking nothing like Herb Brooks,it was an ok film.I wasn't even all that put off by Steve Guttenberg's portrayal of Jim Craig.Doesn't compare to "Miracle" by any means though.

That was Rizzo. I liked when he told about his buddies fucking with him about the lucky bounce he got on the game winner:
"Two more inches to the left, and you'd be painting bridges."
Funny how he was maybe the least skilled player on the team, and Brooks still made him captain.

Read the book, Wolf.

I have the game on DVD and I watch it a couple of times a year. It never gets old.

Goose bump city. The best part, we had a Finnish exchange student living with us and got to watch the US beat the Finns for the gold.

I still can't believe that at one time and place this entire country gave this much of a shit about hockey.

Probably had more to do with the cold war than the sport.
