A rookie vs a 1st team Defense w/ blitz packages and schemes.

I don't understand why Carolina drafted Newton. They should have moved down in the draft and started stocking up their lines, tanked 2011 and grabbed Luck next spring, and then filled in around him with the rest of their 2012 higher draft choices. And then with the low finish that would have been expected for 2012 for a rookie QB they could have finished getting the pieces in the 2013 draft that they needed and then had a nice 5 or 6 year window to be competitive.

They already tanked the 2010 season. Another year of that and they might run Jerry Richardson out of town. Besides, Cam Newton might be the least of their problems. Defense looked pathetic in the preseason.

Oh, and they didn't move down in the draft because nobody wanted to trade up for the #1 pick in a draft where there was no clear cut #1 player.

Pretty much this.

Nobody wants to trade up anymore because they pay the number 1 pick too much. Hopefully that now changes with the new CBA.

Watch how many teams want to trade up this year to get Luck. If there is a player worth taking then teams want the pick. Even though there wasn't a clear cut #1, Carolina probably could have traded the pick this year if they were willing to drop far enough down. Newton should not have gone #1 in any case.

Shocking...and with 400 yards to boot! Still need to see consistency for 15 more games.

I wouldn't go carving that bust for Canton just yet. There are Pop Warner QBs that could put up 400 yards on that AZ defense.

lol....Im a Panther fan who didn't care for the Cam draft. So no kool -aid drinking here and yes this was just Arizona. I know.

2-14 last season. Just skeptical with a revamped team in 2011.
Rookies NORMALLY dont do well and he looked awful in pre-season.

Maybe it was just the Cardinals defense not pressuring him, but Newton looked pretty poised for his first professional game.

This. He never looked rattled or uncomfortable in the pocket. I still don't see the Panthers winning more than 5-6 games this season, but I am excited for the future.

ETA: Just heard on the radio that it took the 2010 Panthers five games to rack up 422 yards passing.

what hall of fame quaterback had a better 1st game then Scam?

I underestimated Cam. HOF'er? Not going there. But he looks pretty damn good for a rookie thus far.

Made a few rookie mistakes, but that's to be expected. I didn't want to draft the guy, but so far he's proven me wrong.

Yep. And like Peyton, they've got him throwing it 40 times a game. Usually with an empty backfield. So there's gonna be some picks.

D'Angelo and Stewart combined for what, 10 carries yesterday? I can't remember but it was something crazy like that. Can't believe how much they're having Cam throw...even if they're playing from behind, still it's pretty crazy.

Cam set the Panthers franchise passing record for a game in his second game!! 2 back to back 400 yard games has only been done 6 times period in NFL history and he did it in his first 2 games and against Green Bays Defense! Not saying this kids a HOF player already but if you're not at least sipping on the kool aid by now then give it back. Mine is being sipped on pretty hard at the moment. Kid is a baller!

Newton has had 2 very good games. But let's see what happens now there is film on him and defenses start game planning for him. How he adjusts after that will say a lot about what type of QB he will be.
