Major League Soccer 2012
Season 17
One day away from CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals with Toronto hosting LA Galaxy and Santos Laguna at Seattle. I wouldn't be surprised if Toronto upsets LA. Every team in MLS improved over last season and we'll see who has improved the most. Seattle is also pretty strong and they face a tough Santos squad, but Seattle isn't scared. This league isn't second rate anymore . . . there is a reason MLS players move into EPL teams and contribute almost right away where players from other leagues usually take awhile to adjust to the roughness and speed of play. In Major League Soccer the quality and level of play has slowly increased every year for about a decade . . .
. . . A decade ago, I thought season seven would be the last one. They had just contracted from 12 teams in 2001 down to 10 teams owned by only three men in 2002. Robert Kraft had New England, Lamar Hunt owned Columbus, Kansas City and Dallas and Phillip Anschutz(Anschutz Entertainment Group) took on the leagues six other teams. MLS had one Soccer Specific Stadium in Columbus and that was only three seasons old.
Now? There are 19 teams with 18-1/2 owners and plenty of locations lining up to join the league. AEG sold four of their six teams and 1/2 of another to a group led by Oscar DeLahoya. AEG now owns only half of Houston and all of the Galaxy. Lamar Hunt sold off Kansas City and after he passed, one son took Columbus and the other took Dallas There are now 13 Soccer Specific Stadiums with a 14th scheduled to open this season in Houston and a 15th scheduled to open next season in San Jose.
Last season MLS set a record for attendance with 17,872 average which placed them above the NBA(17,319 in 2010-2011) and the NHL(17,126 in 2010-2011) for the first time ever. In fact, they finished in the top 10 in worldwide attendance for soccer leagues through the 2010-2011 season.
1) 42,690 German Bundesliga
2) 35,283 English Premier League
3) 29,128 Spanish La Liga
4) 25,837 Primera Division de Mexico
5) 24,031 Italian Serie A
6) 19,843 Primera Division Argentina
7) 19,650 French Ligue 1
8) 19,116 Dutch Eredivisie
9) 17,872 Major League Soccer
10) 17,651 Chinese Super League
11) 17,388 English Championship
12) 15,797 Japanese J-League
13) 14,976 Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A
14) 14,539 Bundesliga 2
15) 14,058 Turkish Super Lig
I expect that number to grow for several reasons . . .
1) Montreal coming into the league with a newly revamped stadium
2) Houston's new stadium
3) Portland opened up a couple more thousand seats
4) Seattle opened up the Hawk's nest for all matches
5) Seattle is opening up access to the entire stadium when they play Vancouver and Portland
6) MLS took away the balanced schedule giving more opportunities for the growing number of away fans to see matches on their side of the continent
7) Level of play and speed of play has continually increased
8) More and more people are following soccer in North America than ever before
Welcome aboard and discuss.

I hope it keeps growing. America should be involved at the very top in soccer, it's the worlds largest sport, FFS. Montreal would probably be closest to me, but even then it's a couple of hours away.

Re: Major League Soccer 2012
Excited about the Impact finally joining MLS. They were a pillar franchise in many of the lower tier leagues in North America, and with the ethnic make-up of Montreal, soccer has always been very popular here. We've had great crowds for International friendlies, U-20 world championships, the Montreal Manic of the long defunct NASL, and even the Impact have even been able to draw 12,000-13,000 playing in "lesser" leagues.
The first few Impact games will be played in Olympic Stadium, and huge crowds are expected. The revamped Saputo Stadium with be ready shortly after that. It's as nice a soccer-specific stadium as there is in North America.
On the field, the Impact will be scrappy, and will likely be in most games, but they don't seem to have much in the way of offence. The future is bright though - great, committed ownership, good coaching, and a somewhat established fan base. I think this community is a good add for the league.
Looking forward to learning even more about the game and being active on this thread this year.

I just read that Arne Friedrich is going to "Chicago Fire", whatever club that is. He's probably got a couple of great years left in him, good for them.

I thought that was probably just a peanut butter brand name or something, and that MLS clubs were sold back and forth between cities on a monthly basis like in those other American sports leagues where all the black folks make money.

23,433 in Seattle
47,658 in Toronto
As MLS becomes more financially viable, I could easily see more players from the elite European leagues making their way to MLS. Players born in Italy, Spain, Germany and England don't normally have to move to a foreign country to make a living playing football so their lower leagues are all stocked with domestic talent. MLS is almost at the point of being able to compete with those clubs for fringe players.

Yeah, he's solid . . . if healthy. He's coming off of spine surgery and walking into a fast and rough league. Michael Ballack is rumored to be heading to MLS . . . I hope they both can last long enough to leave a good impression like Thorsten Frings. The last high profile German that came to MLS was Lothar Mattheus and he pissed off almost every person he dealt with for his one "season".SebastianLeeDanzig wrote:I just read that Arne Friedrich is going to "Chicago Fire", whatever club that is. I think he pissed off almost every person he dealt with for every season he played anywhere. Loddar is adorable.Rageman wrote:The last high profile German that came to MLS was Lothar Mattheus and he pissed off almost every person he dealt with for his one "season".
But Friedrich is far from being such a dope. And he's at an age where he could definitely reach the top of his form again, while being experienced enough to guide and help out younger team mates.

If he can stay healthy and help teach his younger teammates only half as much as Frings . . . I'll be thrilled. TF was yelling at/to his teammates trying to get them in the right place and was always putting in dangerous crosses . . . He cares about his team and it shows.

He played for Berlin in the first German league for eight straight years, most of which time he was captain, and he could still have made great money over here now, so I doubt he's switching to just phone it in without a genuine effort to advance the team.

Re: Major League Soccer 2012
Pretty fun opening weekend . . . wasn't real crazy about spreading out the games over three days when three teams had the week off but it was still pretty fun seeing teams go at each other for real again . . . and no . . I don't plan on doing these long ass posts every week.
Colorado 2-0 Columbus . . . 14,746 - Columbus looks like they will struggle. Colorado still solid.
Vancouver 2-0 Montreal . . . 21,000 - Going to be a long season in Montreal. Sorry, Wolf.
DC United 0-1 Kansas City . . . 16,314 - Stoppage time winner for Eastern Conference favorites
San Jose 1-0 New England . . . 10,525* - Good match between 2 evenly matched teams
Los Angeles 1-3 Real Salt Lake . . . 27,000 - Defending champs looked tired from Wednesday's Champions League match. RSL looked sharp as always. The Barcelona of MLS so to speak.
Sunday
FC Dallas 2-1 New York . . . 20,906 - NY's plan for MLS looks awkward. Dallas looked quick with tight passing.
Chivas USA 0-1 Houston . . . 14,464 - Stoppage time winner for defending Eastern Conference champs.
124,955 total
17,851 average and that will go up after tonight's match in Portland v Philadelphia on ESPN2. Not bad considering Seattle wasn't involved in week one and they usually blow up the average quite a bit.
*San Jose plays in a temporary stadium until their new one will be built for the start of next season so they will have a low attendance for the entire season
Dallas will most likely struggle with attendance because their stadium is way out of the way and half of the season it will be 300 degrees. They had a good showing on today's NBC Sports Channel match because it's opening day and Thierry Henry may never play in Dallas again because of the new unbalanced schedule.
Chivas USA will also struggle with attendance for many reasons.
1) They came into the league with a "Mexicanos versus los Gringos" mantra and it came off as rather offensive to many people. Most MLS fans wish they would re-brand.
2) They kind of just jumped into the league and "decided" that their stadium plan was to piggyback with the Galaxy and their new stadium. That didn't go over well with other cities and potential ownership groups that were denied entry into the league because they didn't have a new stadium in the works.
3) Sharing a stadium with the Galaxy doesn't mean their fans come with it.
4) The main owner(Chivas de Guadaljara owner Jorge Vargas) barely puts any interest into it at all as he's pre-occupied with his main club and they are in free fall. 8 seasons in and the USA version are just now starting to look for a stadium in the SoCal area.
5) Like all MLS teams they've improved but, the last few seasons, they haven't been too particularly fun to watch.

It's OK. They're an expansion team, with little in the way of offense. It is what it is. Too bad the defence had lapses. They still may be a .500 club. From what I hear Vancouver is a much improved squad over last year.Rageman wrote: Vancouver 2-0 Montreal . . . 21,000 - Going to be a long season in Montreal. Sorry, Wolf.
45,000+ tickets sold for the opener, at Olympic Stadium, on Saturday. Should be rockin'.

I like going to the games, except in the middle of summer.
Seattle and Portland have one hell of a following.
Time to fly the team since the new season just started!

All of the European designated players asked David Beckham what the league was like before they signed up and Thierry Henry asked the first ever French player in MLS, Youri Djorkaeff, what it was like in America. Considering that Youri settled in New York after retiring, it was an easy sell.
Now that you add a French speaking city into the league, that should help with international appeal of MLS. Instead of every European or African that is hoping to come to MLS and saying "I want to play in NY or LA", like they almost all have said, maybe you'll see Montreal added into the list due to the comfort level for the French speaking players.
Pretty excited about what Montreal can possibly bring to the league as the most European-esque city in North America. I would go after older French speaking designated players like Didier Drogba, Eric Djemba-Djemba, Florent Malouda or Luis Saha to build up the profile of the club then pursue younger designated players down the road.MONTREAL -- The Montreal Impact has added 2,000 seats at Olympic Stadium in a bid to break the city's attendance record at its Major League Soccer home opener against the Chicago Fire on Saturday.
The team hopes to top the 58,542 who turned out in 1981 for a playoff game by the defunct Montreal Manic of the North American Soccer League, also against Chicago.
The club said 46,500 tickets have been sold thus far for the match. Work to install a synthetic surface at the stadium began Monday and is expected to be finished ahead of an open house for fans Thursday evening.

As of this evening there are 54,000 tickets sold for the inaugral home opener in Montreal on Saturday. IMO that is pretty impressive.
They'll be a huge dropoff after the initial game, but the Impact are going to do well here.
Now sign a freakin' striker already!

Less than 5,000 walk ups needed to set a new record. That's awesome. Good luck against Chicago. They're a pretty tough, under the radar type of team and have tons of speed.WOLF wrote:As of this evening there are 54,000 tickets sold for the inaugural home opener in Montreal on Saturday. MONTREAL -- The Montreal Impact hope they have found the experienced striker they've been looking for in Italian veteran Bernardo Corradi.
The Major League Soccer expansion team signed 35-year-old Corradi after he trained with the team for two weeks on a try-out. Terms of the deal were not released.
He can't play until his international transfer papers come in and he may also need to continue work on his fitness, so he is unlikely to see action in the club's first MLS home game Saturday afternoon against Chicago.
Corradi scored 68 goals in more than 250 games in Serie A, including time with Chievo Verona, Lazio, and most recently Udinese. He has won a European Super Cup and an Italian Cup.
more in the link above
Even, though you are from Montreal and not Toronto, congrats on Toronto FC knocking out the Galaxy in the CONCACAF Champions League. LA had plenty of chances to win the match and just flat out choked. If they were as good as advertised . . . it would have been 4 or 5 to 2 in favor of the Galaxy
Major kudos to Thorsten Frings. He played with a ton of heart and put out a lot of fires. That team is starting to become . . . a team. I'm glad that Aron Winter was given time to build his squad after that horrendous first half of last season. I like how he said "Fuck You" to the standard style of MLS play. He put in a three man attack and stayed with it, although he's been forced to experiment with the defense because they've been generally pretty weak.
I started this thread saying that I wouldn't be surprised if Toronto upset LA . . . but there is no way I can say they'll beat Santos in a two leg tie. I'll be rooting for them like a motherfucker but Santos is one strong club. They demolished Seattle and Seattle is one of the top 3 or 4 MLS squads.

Montreal 1-1 Chicago . . . 58,912 - Chicago becomes spoiler on record breaking first match on a wafer field
San Jose 0-1 Houston . . . 21,816 - Houston has whooped SJ's ass since stealing their team, and SJ came back as an expansion team.
Dallas 1-1 Portland . . . 12,203 - My beloved Timbers come back and secure a crucial road point against a tough squad
Kansas City 3-0 New England . . . 19,777 - KC proves they are the class of the East. NE, not so much.
Real Salt Lake 2-0 New York . . . 16,738 - Poor NY gets two of the toughest teams in the league to start the season and both are on the road. Ouch.
Seattle 3-1 Toronto . . . 38,709 - Seattle bounces back from blow out in Mexico with impressive youngster David Estrada picking up his first three goals in a hat trick. Not bad for a midfielder filling in at forward due to injuries up top
Chivas USA 0-1 Vancouver . . . 7,723 - Vancouver is a vastly improved team with no weaknesses in the starting 11. Depth could prove to be a bit of a problem.
Sunday
Philadelphia 1-2 Colorado . . . 19,074 - Colorado moves the ball well and always has depth at striker
Los Angeles 3-1 DC United . . . 18,466 - Too little too late from the Galaxy. Could've used some of that on Wednesday

Not only is it growing, it has so much potential to take off even more. Here's something I pulled off of the DuNord siteMickeyG wrote:I hope it keeps growing. America should be involved at the very top in soccer, it's the worlds largest sport, FFS. Montreal would probably be closest to me, but even then it's a couple of hours away.

Re: Major League Soccer 2012
Bad day for Canadian MLS teams so far . . . two 2-0 losses with DC @ Vancouver later tonight but I don't think too many Canadians care as the Canadians simply outclassed the USA in Olympic Qualifying today. Major congrats, Wolf. You're not in yet but you guys are in the drivers seat for the first place playoff with the second place squad from the other group. Cuba has already been knocked out and it looked like they gave up before they even got here so you guys should roll against them on Monday. The USA now needs to beat El Salvador and then they will have to most likely beat Mexico in order to qualify for the Olympics.

I can't wait for it to warm up here so I can hit a few Sounders games. Up until this weekend the weather has been terrible, not conducive to having a good time at an outdoor event.

God, this will have be a long year for the Impact. I thought they would be able to hang in a lot of games, but this team seriously has ZERO finish. They give up a goal, and they're fucked.
As for Canada, it would be nice to finally get into the Olympics or World Cup. Our climate isn't exactly condusive to producing elite soccer players, and much of the resource $ are devoted to hockey, but a country such as ours should be able to put a decent squad on the pitch.

Re: Major League Soccer 2012
Just wait until the summer transfer window opens . . . that's when most MLS teams improve the most. This past off-season was by far and away the best that MLS teams have ever had at improving their rosters. When the summer window opens, that's when most players are out of contract and are willing to move so look for Saputo to invest big time in July. Until then, they'll have to try to hold out like besieged homesteaders until the cavalry comes in to save the day . . . yeah I just watched "A Bridge Too Far".WOLF wrote:God, this will have be a long year for the Impact. With the popularity of the Canadian MLS teams so high, a good run into the Olympics would do a lot to entrench proper football in Canada. They still need to beat Cuba and more importantly, the second place squad which is looking more and more like Honduras and they are very talented.WOLF wrote:As for Canada, it would be nice to finally get into the Olympics or World Cup. I'm pulling for you guys. I've always respected Canadian soccer. Craig Forrest won the Gold Cup MVP when they won the whole thing in 2000 and he deserved it. He was a monster in goal and I still call it the best performance by a keeper for an entire tournament that I've ever seen and that includes Italy's Buffon in '06 WC, Germany's Khan and USA's Friedel in '02 WC.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_CONCACAF_Gold_Cup
After that, Canada always played the USA very tough, including in '07, when we had our A team playing, Canada got robbed on the tying goal very late in a semi-final match with a horrible offside call.
Good luck, man

Re: Major League Soccer 2012
Holy fucking shit
Canada totally fucked up against Cuba and gave up a late tying goal thus opening the door for the USA to beat tiny little El Salvador who they've beaten every time they've faced them in Olympic Qualifiers . . .
. . . However . . . The USA fucked up against El Salvador and allowed them to score a late tying goal and instead of the USA being in the driver's seat . . . they are now out of the Olympics.
Looks like MLS will get all of those young Americans back a lot sooner than they thought . . . and for a lot longer than they thought, too

Re: Major League Soccer 2012
Sorry about the Olympics, Wolf. Your boys played tough but Mexico is just too deep. Big game on Wednesday with the Impact, though. They are probably playing the most balanced team in the league and it's in their house. They recently lost to Chivas at home so it's not impossible but the chances of them losing twice in a row at home are very slim. I thought they played great in New York but Thierry Henry was amazing. He is now in the top 100 scorers of all time in MLS after less than two full seasons.
