Broncos release Andre’ Goodman
The Broncos announced today that they have released cornerback Andre' Goodman after three seasons with the team.
Goodie had been one of the first free-agent acquisitions made by Josh McDaniels and Brian Xanders in 2009, when he signed a five-year deal with $9.8M in guarantees. The 11th-year player was due to make $3.42M in 2012 and $3.96M in 2013, the final year of his contract; his original $6M signing bonus should mean he will count for $2.4M against the team's 2012 cap, which would translate to a cap savings of about $2.2M this season and $5.16M in 2013.
We had suggested two days ago that Goodman was a prime candidate for a contract restructuring, and the timing of his release (deep into free agency) tells us he likely turned down a request from the team to rework his contract. That's our pure speculation educated guess, at least.
Goodman was made expendable by the emergence of the undrafted Chris Harris last year, and the addition of Tracy Porter last month via free agency. Porter is likely to start across from Champ Bailey at the right cornerback spot, with Harris firmly entrenched as the starting nickel corner.
Beyond those three starters, Denver has Cassius Vaughn and Syd'Quan Thompson, along with Tony Carter, Joshua Moore, and Ramzee Robinson. Goodman's release would appear to increase the likelihood of the team drafting another corner two weeks from now.
According to PFF, Goodman graded out at minus-6.4 overall for his play in 2011.

Several teams interested in No. 4 pick
The Philadelphia Eagles and St. Louis Rams are among at least four teams interested in trading up to the No. 4 spot with the Cleveland Browns, according to league sources. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher has already identified the Browns are as a potential trading partner, and the Eagles want to move up from No. 15. Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill is a target for some teams interested in Cleveland's spot, but Southern California OT Matt Kalil, Louisiana State CB Morris Claiborne and Oklahoma State WR Justin Blackmon all could be targets.

Stat of the Week
This from the mind of the great Gil Brandt:
Amazing the bust factor at linebacker in the last 10 years. Brandt tipped me onto this, and he's absolutely right: Look at the top 10 picks in the draft from 2001 to 2010. Six have been linebackers (if you count Terrell Suggs as a defensive end). The six are A.J. Hawk, Ernie Sims, Keith Rivers, Jerod Mayo, Aaron Curry and Rolando McClain. One of the six has made a Pro Bowl -- Mayo -- and he's made just one. Rivers was traded to the Giants for a pittance of a fifth-round pick on Friday. Curry was dealt from Seattle to the Raiders for a seventh-rounder last year. The Eagles gave up a fifth-round pick for Sims in 2010; he's an unsigned free agent now. Hawk and McClain have been pedestrian at best in Green Bay and Oakland, respectively.
One Pro Bowl linebacker picked in a decade in the top 10 of the draft. Contrast that to defensive linemen: Twenty-six were picked in the top 10 of the draft from 2001 to 2010 -- obviously counting Suggs as a defensive end -- and those 26 have made 29 Pro Bowls.

Philadelphia Eagles CB Asante Samuel says he wants to remain on the team. The Eagles have cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on the roster as well, and Samuel's age (31) and 2012 cap number ($10.5 million) make him the most logical of those three to trade if they want to alleviate overcrowding in their secondary.

Eagles talking to the Browns

For the 4th pick, per espn. Who would they be targeting? From the sounds it might be pretty hard for them to move up that far though.
