ESPN 30-30 ELWAY TO MARINO NFL Draft 1983

So much shit happened in that draft and as a kid I still remember it more then any other. This segment sheds a lot of light. Everyone had a shot at Elway...Seattle..Dallas...You name it but one things for fucking sure. The Colts fucked that whole draft up for everyone except for one thing, so many great players came out.

Al Davis believes the NFL obstructed his deal to get Elway and that's a fact backed up by "Marvin Demoff" "Dan Marino and Elways agent" but so much other shit happened in 1983 it was mind boggling looking back. Great show for anyone who remembers. I still think Elway was a douche for demanding where he was NOT going to play but this show pretty much changed half of that.

"You know, I kept a diary during the entire Elway process." He then began telling stories from that diary. Unbelievable stories, like how John Elway nearly became a Raider, what Hall of Fame quarterback was almost traded to make room for him, and the reasoning behind Elway's public claim that he would only play on the West Coast.

Darrell Green was probably one of my favorite players not just from the draft, but on my all time list....And I don't really care for the Skin's, it might be my hate for the Cowgirls. Fuck what anyone says, Darrell ran down Dorsett like a wounded duck.

Pittsburgh passing on Marino was painful but Terry Bradshaw talking shit on Elway in those clips was great then to have Bradshaw go down for good a few games into the following season, DOH! SF even tossed the idea of trading Joe Montana for Elway.

What a beautiful mess the 1983 draft was.

Here's a funny little piece of trivia concerning Elway. Stanford tried to recruit Billy Beane ( A's GM, Moneyball protagonist ) to replace sophmore QB John Elway. Beane chose to take the NY Mets $125,000 signing bonus instead. Beane failed at the MLB player level, but went on to enormous success as a scout and GM.

John Elway turned out to have a nice career too. You know like one of the greatest QBs of all time kind of career? That story makes me chuckle. Stanford's original choice for backup really had proven them wrong in that assessment.

Dan Fouts was also being tossed around! Fouts was in a contract dispute that off season, the team was hurting and the Chargers owner and Don Coryell made a few calls behind the scene tho the Chargers owner would never publicly admit it "crazy coot wouldn't go on record for anything" it was confirmed through the agents and GM's that Fouts was involved and brought up.

Elway and "Jim CRAZY FUCK Irsay" change the course of history and that 30-30 program touched on so many unseen story's that affected hall of famers and dynasty's....If you wanted to point the finger at one person start with Elway refusing to play for the Colts because behind the scenes reality "wanted a player coach not a disciplinary and the rumors of the Colts moving" made Elway and his dad demand another team.

Can't really blame Elway now, the colts sucked, they was a shit team and moved to Baltimore a year or so later.

Fuck Elway. I've always hated that arrogant prick, and this documentary solidified that. There's a reason there's an NFL draft. Players shouldn't have a say on where they are drafted. That's not how it works. He should have been grateful to have been the #1 pick and gone to work.

But I'm sure as hell happy he did what he did, because if Elway ended up a Colt, we would not have ended up with the greatest QB of all time, Peyton Manning in 1998. So that was a real blessing for the Colts in the long run.

Yeah I was pretty shocked to hear that too. But in the end, as Accorsi stated, Walsh realized he just couldn't trade Montana. He was frustrated with Montana at that moment, but he came to his senses pretty quickly and realized he could never trade him.

Kind of similar to Irsay stating that in 2004, Bill Polian wanted to trade Peyton Manning because he thought it would be impossible to meet his contract demands and he was frustrated with negotiations. In the end, that scenario would have never panned out either.

According to the segment and obviously known...Walsh was always looking 4 years down the road but yeah, as much as he wanted he just couldn't pull the trigger on Montana. The 49er's won in 82 and took the west in 83 I think, an off year for Joe but still won the division "have to recheck"

Another little known fact, in 1992 the 49er's had on the board to trade Steve Young to the Raiders for their #16 draft pick and the Raiders backed out at the last minute leaving the 49ers openly pissed during the draft.

Young went on to win another Superbowl along with 7 straight pro bowls from 1992-1998.

The Raiders drafted Chester McGlockton who went on to draw more penalties then Marty McSorley and Charles Oakley combined.

The Colts were a disaster and he wasn't just your regular top prospect. Stanford was complete and total crap and he made them almost watchable. It's just like Eli and San Diego being a shithole. They were the rare few to be in a position to say no.

Sounds like excuses to me. Most teams that have the first pick aren't exactly in great shape, that's why they have the #1 pick. When the Colts drafted Peyton Manning in 98, we were coming off a 3-13 season and were less than a model franchise. Yet Peyton had no problems coming to the team and going to work.

Elway and his Dad just thought that they were such hot shit that they could buck the system and force their way onto any team they wanted to. Fuck them and anyone else who pulls that.

And there is very little doubt among anyone who knows football: Peyton Manning>>John Elway.

Agreed......6 halls of famers in the first round and Richard Dent in the 8th. Then tons of all pro's deep like Mark Clayton in the 8th, Tim Krumrie 11th, Karl Mecklenburg in the 12th, Anthony Carter 12th.

Greg Townsend, Charles Mann, Leonard Marshall, Darryl Talley, Roger Craig, Henry Ellard....Gary Kubiak.....Among others deeper in the draft.
