RIP Deacon Jones 1938 - 2013

They say if they counted sacks when he played, they'd still be chasing his record. I never got to watch him play, but he was one of my favorite NFL characters in retirement.
"When I see guys huddling up after the game, to pray, that's what scares me about the game. I'm a Baptist, but I'm also a quarterback killer, and I ain't praying with you. But I will give you 30 seconds to ask your Lord and master to keep me from killing you." -- Hall of Fame defensive end "Deacon" Jones on what aspect of the modern game most upsets him.
RIP, Secretary of defense.

While he was an all-time great character and did indeed cause much havoc, I did tire of his constant complaining about his uncounted sacks. The headslap, which was illegal when they began counting sacks, was involved on just about any of his highlights that I've seen. Take away his now illegal move . . . what would his sack count be? The modern players that will never threaten his totals aren't allowed to hit lineman or QBs in the head and they can't hit the QBs low anymore either . . . Carson Palmer was never the same after his Kimo-therapy. Big money in protecting those QBs so comparing eras is damn near impossible.
R.I.P.

Love it. I think he was just trying to be politically correct.
I have a co-worker who played DE in the 1970s...and in the offseason Deacon Jones personally taught him the head slap. he was psyched. And then they banned it before he got a chance to use it.

When they had that Football life show on NHL network about the Fearsome Foursome.
Deacon: "We hated Fran Terkenton."
Merlin: "No we didn't hate him."
Deacon: "Well, I did."

That's some funny shit right there, I don't see how anybody couldn't be entertained by listening to him tell stories, some of those old guys were just hilarious does anybody remember the old white NFL player that was always on Letterman he was a riot too.
R.I.P. Big Man.

Did he invent the term sack? I remember him saying something about wanting to put all 11 guys on the opposing offense into a giant sack and beat the bag with a baseball bat. That is a guy you want on YOUR team.

Yep, he got credit for terming a qb tackle, a "sack."
They'd kick this fucker out of the league now.

For ramming his huge hand into linemens' forehead on every down, in an attempt to cause brain damage?
Yeah, they might kick him out for that.
Why is that a bad thing?

No, for slapping heads and talking about killing qbs.

Oh. Yeah, Mike Webster could have told you that head slaps were harmless.
If he hadn't been drooling and tasering himself to sleep in the last years of his life.

Back when the printed Sporting News, I remember like a four page feature on Mike Webster. That was a huge amount of words for that mag back then. Every interview with family/friends/people in his town spoke with huge sadness on what a drunken, homeless mess he was post football. CTE wasn't even a thought back then. Everyone just thought he was depressed and an addict. If we knew back then what we know now about concussions he may still be alive today.
