Do you gamble (bet money) on sports?

Post by Woosh »

Maybe you gamble like a real man, and you're connected with somebody who's connected.

Or maybe you have an office pool and you pitch in ten bucks and somebody wins the whole thing the next Monday.

Or maybe you wager with a buddy while you're playing Call of Duty and your wives are finishing up the dinner preparation.

Point being: do you gamble on sports? If so, which sports do you prefer? What got you started? What keeps you going? What skills would you say, in your opinion, are paramount to being a good gambler? Is it really as simple as a Kenny Rogers song? What was your biggest winner's purse? Just talk about anything gambling you want. Remember to depersonalize everything you write. that you way you have no reason to be dishonest. You could even talk about SWIM (someone I met), if you catch my drift.

I bet on MMA fights using a bookie, but usually only if the money lines are hugely skewed and I really love or hate the underdog. I've won over $3K on fights when the underdog pulled off a win. My next bet will be on Miesha Tate. Last I checked she was at +500, so if she wins, I'd win $500 for every hundred I bet.

No. Rooting for the redskins is stressful enough I'd be a fucking mess if I had money on the games.

Gambling isn't my cup of tea. Except for when it comes to humiliating sludge sig bets.

Thank you Mazerati, and would you mind, and this is entirely up to you, explaining how you got started? Did you have a cool uncle who took you to the tracks? Or did you figure out stuff as you went along? Is there a "rush" that comes with winning? Just whatever 'gambling related' wisdom you could share.

To be honest, and give you full disclosure: I know jack shit about gambling. I don't even understand over/unders, or anything like that. I'm not interested in getting started, but I am curious and would like to understand the ins and outs, and what draws people in.

Thanks caroline, it means a lot to me (real talk, I know it's easy to sound sarcastic on the internet) that you responded.
You mentioned underdogs. Would you say that, most of the time, you're emotionally invested in the fights as well as monetarily invested? Do you prefer underdogs usually?
Would you be willing to share how you got started?

I've been doing a lot of asking without much telling. Well, there's a reason for that.

The most "gambling" I've ever done entailed taking 15 dollars out of my paycheck when I worked at a grocery store and putting it into a Nascar pool every week during the season. I never won one time in the two seasons I participated, so I was like "quit taking my money and putting it in the pool without asking me. I'd rather throw the money out the window on the way home, that way, at least I could feel the cash in my hands first.

6 years ago, I drove to New York. We pulled off i-95 and I can't remember if the stop was in Virginia or Maryland (pretty sure it was Virginia, but I wouldn't gamble on it, lol), but there were all kinds of slot machines in this gas station type place, so while we got gas, I noticed this machine you put money in, in the hopes that it will be the quarter that pushes other quarters and/or prizes out of the machine into your hands. I got two dollars in quarters, and walked out with 28.50 (ten dollar bill in a false gold clip and a shit ton of quarters) and a gold watch. I was this close to an iPod, and this is when they were not as ubiquitous as they are now. Not just anybody had one. I guess that''s the closest I've ever felt an "impulse" to keep going. But the clock was tickin' dude, and all I know is: I set someone up to win BIG TIME.

Then a few years ago, the lottery came to NC. So, of course, as a North Carolinian you gotta love Ric Flair and they came up with these Ric Flair WOOOO tickets, and I bought a couple as a novelty. I justified it as "Hey, it's the education lottery. Surely good things will be done with this money!" I won ten dollars. Which was cool, but I had no idea what to do next, as I'd never won a thing before in my life. My friend was like " You idiot, you just take it back into the gas station and tell them you've won!" I figured I should stop while I was ahead. And that's my life as a gambler.

When it comes to sports, my bets are usually more like "if your team loses, you have to speak with a lisp for a week" or something silly like that. I've never put money into the equation. I'm just curious how the other side does things.

i got started gambling because my dad was a racetrack announcer here in Chicago starting in 1973 until he retired from it in 2001 and he also owned a couple of race horses with my uncle...he would take me to work with him when he called races so i was born into it lol

as for gambling on sports my dad got me into that too but i've become a much bigger addict than him recently lol

yea for me there is a BIG rush...like this morning for instance its the monday after a big weekend that was loaded with games to bet on in every sport and right now i'm bored as hell because there's not much going on and i miss the rush

as for unders and overs...for example lets say in Hockey the Hawks are playing Pittsburgh..they usually make hockey over and unders 5 1/2 goals
so if you expect a alot of scoring you would play over 5 1/2 and if the two teams combine for more than 5 goals you win if the game ends say 3-2 or anything under 5 goals you lose

I love to bet on games I just don't do it for money anymore. I ended winning two $400 dollar bets with my friends ( 2004 ), this was when we we were all students so $400 was a lot of fucking money. It ended up sucking because I knew both of their financial situations and since we were friends it was no fun. After that I still bet on everything with friends, but it's who pays the tab, etc.

Those are more fun IMO cause your hanging with your crew and talking shit to each other. I got the idea from my grandfather who loves to wager pizza and a pitcher bets. If it's someone I rarely see $20 here and there, but nothing stupid.

I got started 15-20 years ago when I was a big boxing fan. Having money on a fight made it more fun to watch. These days I only bet when I'm invested in a fight. Most often it's when I like the favorite and the spread is big. Then I bet against my favorite. My thinking is that if my fighter wins, I don't mind losing the bet, and if they lose, the sting of the loss is offset by winning a lot of money. Sometimes though, I'll bet on an underdog I really like. In those cases it's like I'm doing something to help them win. And yes, I'm fully aware that these two approaches are completely inconsistent. But it works for me.

Mazerati, your stories are crazy interesting too. Anything else you ever want to share or talk about, I'm all ears.
Thanks for explaining over/under, I finally "get it". Honestly, I hear so many people use over/under in a way that doesn't coincide with what you described (or odesn't make sense at all, really), so it's one of those terms non-gamblers have co-opted to mean whatever they want it to at the moment.
Your explanation taught me more and faster about over/under than a 14 minute Youtube video. You have a gift.

Sports betting is very big over here in the UK. Since it was deregulated a few years ago the whole thing has exploded.

There are bookies on every street that are open from 8am until 10pm where you can bet on horses, dogs, football, virtual roulette, virtual dogs, slots etc.

The betting market for sports is huge. You can bet on your phone, tablet, computer and you can bet in-play. Most of the big football (Soccer) are sponsored by betting firms. There is a growing problem with addiction.

Myself? I like a flutter on horses and soccer. First goalscorer bets, correct score and accumulators mostly. Around £40 a week.

Thanks for the links; those were informative, yet succint, reads. The infographic was especially nice.

I'm not sure how much you know about gambling in America, but do you foresee the UK gambling culture becoming a trendsetter of sorts, with this de-regulation and gambling boom you've mentioned? Or do you think of it more as an experiment gone awry that will probably get a stop put to it probably sooner rather than later?
I'm not up to date on my UK politics, but what is the attitude towards gambling over there these days as far as the government goes?

I've bet on sports most of my life dating back to Jr High school when we'd bet those NFL pencils? If I won I'd take your Denver Pencil and break it in your face.

At 17 after highschool I moved to Vegas and lived in the Sports Books. I'd fill out cards and have the local old seniors turn it in and give them a small kick back for doing so.

I've done local pools, parlay's, high stakes fantasy leagues. Baseball and Football. Tried Basketball but wasn't good at it, wasn't good at college football either.

1996 Super Bowl XXXI The Packers over the Patriots 35–21. Made hundreds, the point spread was insane and I just got in under the PUSH change the last day. I made the bet a day before the point drop.

Super Bowl XXIII January 22, 1989 The 49ers over the Bengals 20–16. Lost like $50 and ended up paying it with Pot. Was pissed as fuck. Hated the Niners and Montana for years. Cincy had that game.

Lost $100 on the Tuck Rule then won it back on the Pats vs Steelers game the next week.

1987 N.Y. Giants vs. Denver, cleaned fucking house with all the local Denver fans...Got so ugly I gathered my winnings and was forced to leave the party immediately before getting lynched. Picture being in a room full of rabid Denver fans and not only was you the only one not rooting for Denver, you took all their money. Had one big friend with me, only reason I didn't get jumped.

Over all I'm made a decent amount of money on the NFL, easily in the thousands.

I'm not up to date on my UK politics, but what is the attitude towards gambling over there these days as far as the government goes?

I was relaxed by the Labour Government of Tony Blair around ten years ago. Since then there have been multiple casino springing up in towns and cities across the country. You are bashed over the head with advertising:

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2013/n ... mbling-ads

1.39 million gambling adverts last year on T.V. Gambling addiction is the now becoming worse than drugs and alcohol for ruining lives.

We have the twice weekly National lottery, the Euro lottery, scratchcards, bingo, slot machine shops, bookies etc. I can walk into any bookie and bet on horse racing in Philadelphia or play the New York lottery. The slots have a £500 jackpot and on virtual roulette you can bet £100 every 20 seconds. You can even put your debit or credit card into them!

The amount that you guys bet on the Superbowl is dwarfed each weekend by the betting on the Premier League soccer. That is each weekend for 38 weeks!

There are now calls for the Government to do something before it gets very serious. The Government obviously benefit from the big companies making millions so seem reluctant to do anything about it.

Fuck yeah! I remember that game. I was a little kid watching it with my dad, I remember specifically wearing my Montana jersey I got for Christmas that year. I had a $10 dollar bet with my dad's coworker/friend so I was sweating it out at the end. When I say I was a little kid, I mean still in grade school so ten bucks was a lot of fucking money to me.

Montana to Taylor and *boom*, I am rich. I won $10 more when they slaughtered Denver next year too.

Ronda Rousey defeated Miesha Tate by armbar submission in the third round.

Sorry for your loss, if you did lose.....Had to google the names just to find out what ya'll waz talkin bout.

You bet on that stuff? That's interesting, can I hit on you or put you in an arm bar sometime? How do you bet, where? I need to go back and read this thread to find out what I'm missing...I've never bet online but I'm not fond of the hour n half trip to the Nevada border. I know some one with a bookie but it would be a task to open connection lines to this person and his bookie.

Is there any online places that are safe and secure? I remember when they came out it was all off shore....I'm guessing it's still the same.

I didn't lose. Well, I lost the bet, but that was just my backup plan to make myself feel better if Rousey lost (I'd have won $1500). I'm happy to pay the $300 since she won.

I would prefer you not hit me, and my husband would prefer you not hit on me, but sure, you can armbar me anytime! Just don't break my arm. I need it.

I like betting old school, with a bookie. Online betting seems hinky to me. My brother hooked me up with him years ago. A few days from now he'll show up at my shop and I'll pay up. I'm always tempted not to pay just to see what he would do, but I chicken out each time.

A bookie would be nice, I've been offered a connection once but I've never dealt with a bookie on top trust issues. Basically he's a bookie for my GF's family, people I've never met so the introduction will be awkward and I'm not keen on up front cash with an unknown....Unless its like you, make the bet then pay or collect after the finish.

If that don't work, I've got no clue how to find a bookie. I've have so many connections from attorneys to the gutter but could probably find a uranium dealer before I could find a sports bookie.

Years ago a friend of mine was betting on baseball games daily and
for a lot of money.
Too bad his day job could not cover his losses.
One day his bookie and some muscle spotted him while on the job
and confronted my friend.
For about 10 months he was on a strict payment plan to cover his losses.
Never seen a person so depressed and beat up on a daily basis.

1 week after he paid off the debt in full, the bookie allowed him to continue betting.
And the idiot agreed. Unreal!

In 1992 I blew around $5,000 on a weekend in the Casinos. It wasn't all lost gambling and sure I was loaded with fun but it cured any addiction to betting I had. That weekend taught me a lesson I could have learned the hard way. Thank god I'm not that dumb. I've lost more to women then gambling.

I find it an amazing approach. When I passionate over sports I never bet on my favorite teams. Pouring salt into the wound almost made it personal so I stopped doing it when money got involved. I don't even like small bet's.

The Tuck Rule was rare and last time I bet on my team with one exception only. I always take bets with Cub fans vs the Dodgers. I've made a killing with them over the years. Not sure what the series records are but since the 90's it feels like LA hasn't lost one series vs the Cub's and if they have it wasn't when I bet.

Is the Tuck Rule a betting thing? I looked it up quick and just saw stuff about fumbles and incomplete passes.

And yeah, I know my betting strategy is weird. But I don't gamble to make money. I see it as paying for entertainment. It's why I play roulette in casinos. It's got the worst odds on the floor but it's fun.

The Tuck Rule came about after a game between the Patriots and Raiders. I believe he was referring to that particular game.

Was in Vegas for the first week of March Madness about 15 years ago. Won a few hundred on two games with small lines.

I usually don't bet on sports unless I'm participating.

Found out over the weekend. I officially can't find a bookie, my connections went cold. So I'm going to keep looking and sniff around online. I'll start with those two sites, do some research.

2001 AFC divisional playoff game
Raiders vs Patriots - Last seconds of the game Tom Brady gets sacked and fumbles the ball, the Raiders recover and the Raiders win! But upon further review and instant replay the REF's called it the Tuck Rule and gave the ball back to New England. New England kicked a FG to tie the game then won in over time.

I was pissed three shades of red and lost money over a fucked up call. The Patriots went on to win the SuperBowl when it should have been the Raiders. One of those calls that's now apart of history.
It still pisses me off, in a half joking I'll never let it die kind of way. But I will never bet on my favorite team again unless it's like you do. I like that.
