CBS gets rights to Thursday Night Football, sort of

CBS will televise Thursday Night Football starting next season...sort of. They got the rights to simulcast 8 games. CBS announcers will work those games, but do pregame along side NFL network folks.

NFL Network has a slate of other Thursday games that will not be simulcast.

I think this is wonderful news for those of us who did not get the NFL Network. Especially nice for those of us who are fantasy football junkies as we now get to watch Cleveland vs. Jacksonville to see if our 1 guy does anything.

It's also great news for everyone who hates the NFL Network announcing team.

It's bad news for anyone like myself, although probably in the minority, that HATE Thursday night games.

The Thursday games would have happened regardless of where they were broadcast. This just paves the way to the inevitable full slate of Thursday's on network TV.

The Thurs night games are terrible match-ups. The marquee teams are not scheduled for Thurs night games. Those teams are scheduled for Sun/Mon night.
Soon the NFL schedule will have games on
Mon, Thurs, Fri, Sat & Sun

So much for the health of NFL Players. The owners don't care about concussions and the players care more about devastating knee injuries as opposed to head/brain injuries.

I'm with you on that. I've always hated Thrusday night games. Even when I catch a Thursday game I didn't like the NFL coverage be it the film or announcing crews.

So maybe the CBS coverage will be a better option. I know a lot of elderly who don't have cable or satellite who would watch.

Not nearly as bad as NFL Network's Mike Maycock telling us how "chippy" everyone is being every three minutes.

Yeah, I don't mind Phil Simms one bit. And I think Greg Gumbel is quite good.

Understood.

But, I have never liked the Thursday night game.. I also don't like the addition of a 3rd Thanksgiving game either..

Out of the big four American sports, no one gets the shaft quite like NFL players. They're nearly treated like cattle for the sake of tax free revenue. The day people quit watching is when things will change. Hopefully for the good.

Phil Simms and Gumbel are tolerable. There are far worst on the air.

CBS gets to air games in 2014 and there is an option on the table for 2015.

I read today in week 16 + 17 Saturday night games will be scheduled.
FUCK!!!

Injuries are already at a high rate. More games will less time off in between will result is many more injuries.

More reason to expand the game day roster for over 50 dressed players.

So I get to hear Phil Simms gems like "In order for it to be a forward pass the ball must travel FORWARD" on Thursdays now.

Great.

Simms seems like a nice enough guy and he knows a lot about the game when I hear him in interviews. But he's TERRIBLE at calling a game on the fly. He actually said this about Brady 2 or so weeks ago.

"Sometimes you can throw the ball so well and it goes farther than you want it to".

Pick a lane Phil. Are you telling me if I overshoot a receiver it's because I made a great pass?

I love the Maycock and Nessler

down to earth, no frills, quiet kinda broadcast, sorta reminds me of Summerall.

a nice contrast to some of the blabbling broadcasters these days

So I'm watching a replay of last year's SB47 right now over lunch.

And in 5 minutes of casual viewing Simms has dropped these classics:

"Jim, that last play to Crabtree worked because he split the double coverage and he caught the ball. He caught the ball."

"That punt was so bad, they really got it where they wanted it."

"That's not the play you want to call down here. That's not the play I would've called." (Following a Frank Gore TD run where he goes untouched)

These guys have to talk 4 hours. Sooner or later they'll all say something stupid.

Except Howard Cosell. A god among men.

Seriously? Owners don't give a fuck?......This isn't the 70's.

They've invested so many millions into players you're fucking high if you think they don't care, they care about their money so they care about players. Why do you think there's so many rule changes and protocols each and every year? Less time between games gives teams less time to prepare and jet lag. This injury shit only affects a couple players trying to come off the IR or nurse a hangnail. Multiple game a week isn't a big fucking deal.

I guess Baseball, Hockey and Basketball should only play once a week so it wont increase MORE injuries!

The NFL is already looking into adding knee shot rules so it will be all chest league. You read too many magazines without every having played.

Add a game or two and take out some preseason.

*edit*
Should stop multi-tasking

Injuries go in waves, rule changes, timing, bad luck or whatever. You can go through several games injure free then hit a few were everyone gains a limp. Concussions this year was just one of those years. Pretty soon we'll see John Beebe helmets passed around. Fuck Concussions, with the rules in place they'll start to go down.

Do you feel that players will soon be using tampons for their vaginas?

Sludge posters use tampons. Professional athletes use Roca-Pads!

Did Deion Sanders, Brian Jordan or Bo Jackson worry about playing multiple games a week. What about two sport athletes in college or multi sport players from professional all the way down to High School? Traveling and time to get a team prepared for the next game is more of a problem. They have 50+ fucking players on their roster.

Have you played two game in a week?

I believe the NHL would like to have a shot at that "shaft".

True. Owners do not give a fuck. Since when did Owners begin to care about the health of their players?
Adding more games to the schedule certainly means the Owners don't care.
Having 4 pre-season games also is proof the Owners do not care about the players.
The bottom line wins. If having that extra 1 or 2 pre-season game at home, charging fans full price for exhibition games and extending the reg season by at least 1 week, the players are paying the price.

You say more than 1 game is not a big deal? Tell that to the players who have to play Mon night and then again on Sunday. It's a big deal.

WAKE UP!

Time and preparation is harder on the staff then the players being sore.

You've never played and have no clue what it's like and this isn't the day's of Darrell Green, players are not 42 years old anymore.
50 man rosters with 100+ total plays per game...Break that down to how many plays your Center and some lineman get slammed on. You're beat up and sore the next day but big fucking deal because in two days you're doing drills, in the gym, watching film or getting your feet rubbed.

Traveling sucks but theses guys have trainers, pedicures, massages, whirlpools, hydrotherapy machines...

Try playing those games a "couple" times a week, stay in shape and keep a full/part time job then travel in buses on weekends and "you" can tell me how hard it is. Try playing closer to 70 to 80 plays in a game or two games back to back then we'll talk.

Do you think football players who get in on 20 to 30 plays a game and do drills the rest of the week are beat up more then anyone who labor's 12 hour a day jobs 5 days a week? What about the guys who do both?

You don't know what you're talking about. Go back to sleep.

I'll cop to liking Mayock. Just a no nonsense guy who focuses on the game itself.
