They're in the same position as Seattle in where they have a bunch of young, good, cost-controlled players coming up. Maybe not this year, but they should be set pretty soon. It normally takes 5-7 years to rebuild a team so it's about to turn around.
Then we'll see if Epstein is the "boy genius" or was in the right place inheriting an already built system. The rebuild in Houston and the Cubs are fascinating to me.

2013 National League Central Final Standings!
St. Louis Cardinals 97W 65L games back
Pittsburgh Pirates 94W 68L
Cincinnati Reds 90W 72L
Milwaukee Brewers 74W 88L
Chicago Cubs 66W 96L 31.0
On a good note, the Cub's finished the year only 8 games back of the Brewers and only three teams lost more games then the Cub's, that's something?

Cubs fans have heard about these great young players ever since Dallas Green. I know eventually the law of averages has to come around for them, but I'll believe it when I see it.
As far as Epstein, until he wins something somewhere other than Boston, he's the guy who tipped in Dan Duquette's shot.

Asking fans in their 70's and 80's to be patient after 110 years of not winning is a tough pill to swallow.

Jake Arrieta took a no hitter into the 8th against Boston today. So there's that.

I will say the standing O the Sox fans gave Arietta was pretty classy.

Here's an interesting article on the Cubs from Rob Neyer:
"If Arrieta's for real, the Cubs might be closer than we thought."

Don't go giving us
that much credit.
Half of them were Cub fans and the other half were applauding that Drew got a hit.....not to break up the no-no but that he actually got a hit.
Good thing they signed him, though. That defense really makes a difference when you can't score more than 3 runs a game.
Idiots.

He could turn out to be a nice return for half a season of Feldman. Strop hands out a lot of free passes but can be a nice bullpen piece as well.

It was weird, the CUBS tart tasted like it was 100 years old while the Dodgers was still fresh.

The worst average among the Cubs "Core 4" is hitting .351. But he has 28 HRs, so there's that I guess.

But that article is a bit misleading, IMO.....for the season, 2 of those guys are hitting below .270
My guess is Kris Bryant is the real deal......the other 3, not so sure yet.

Albert Almora Season: 72 games, .266 batting average, 3 home runs, 37 RBIs.
Javier Baez Season: 75 games, .240 batting average, 11 home runs, 47 RBIs.
Jorge Soler Season: 13 games..........................

Doesn't matter now. Theo killed it sending Hamel and Jeff Smardzjia to the As for another goddamn shortstop.?

Russel is considerably better than Castro, who is still a good SS. Theo now how some room to make some more trades. Remember is was not long ago that Castro was untouchable.
This trade made both teams better. Oakland right now, Chicago.....next year

Who is worse?
2009 Mets, finish .400 the year after they almost win NL east
2003 Red Sox, can't win for a 100 years and lose to yankees in game 7
2014 Chicago cubs ?

The 2003 Red Sox is a poor example. It was 85 years and they lost to a team they were better than, have a multi-billionaire new owner, and are almost bringing the same team back next season minus the ( you know they are ) superstars to be added.
Plus as the MFY found out, Josh Beckett was going to roll all over them. So they were better off not winning that in the long run.
I would say the 2009 Mets. They didn't look like they had a farm built or hope for the future. Plus Epstein and Hoyer weren't at the helm, Omar Minyana was.
Chicago ( and Cubs fans have heard this for decades ) have what looks to be a solid, solid core developing in the minors. Plus with the Smardzwhatever trade adding Addison and Straily does make them look like they're right on the cusp. Remember Smardzwhatever turned down an extension. He was leaving anyways.
Theo made his exit profitable. Epstein hasn't done something right since he claimed Ortiz off waivers in '03.
The Mets OTOH sucked in 2010. Sucked in '11, '12, '08, '07....see a pattern? Pick a year.

The Mets didn't suck in '08 or '07, though. Missing the postseason ≠ sucking.

Geez, I didn't even know this happened until I checked espn.com and saw Smardzjia won his debut with the A's last night.......guess I was living under a rock this weekend.

Cubs fans are sick of hearing it.
We have the best farm system in baseball according to Baseball Prospectus . Blah frigging blah.

I'm so sick if hearing how good they're going to be.

Huh? Really? The last rankings ( currently ) that I recall had Boston at #1. Then with what Luhnow is doing in Houston, the Astros are supposed to the alltime greatest. Didn't SI even say that? I know it's Sports Illustrated, but still.
As I've said it before I think Chicago is the make or break for Theo. Boston was Duquette and Henry's money. In fact Theo had more fuckups than successes in FA with the Sox, in fact look at the clusterfuck he left there. So he really has to succeed in Chitown to be legendary. If he does though can you imagine? He'll be folk hero status.
The Samardwhatever trade on Chicago's part looks brilliant.
