Former Steelers coach Chuck Noll is dead
23 years with the Black and Gold brought a record four Super Bowl wins for the team.

Chuck Noll, the only coach to win four Super Bowls, has died.

Noll, 82, has been in ill health for a number of years with Alzheimer’s, a heart condition and back problems. He died in his sleep Friday night at home in Sewickley. He has lived in both Florida and in Sewickley since his retirement as Steelers coach after the 1991 season.

He coached the Steelers for 23 years, starting in 1969. His first team went 1-13. His fifth won the Steelers first NFL championship in Super Bowl IX. They would win four Super Bowls in six years, culminating with a victory in Super Bowl XIV.

Noll’s record was 209–156–1, including the post-season.

Joe Gordon, who took over as Steelers public relations director in 1969 and worked into the 1990s, said he talked to Noll’s wife, Marianne, Friday evening and she said he was doing fine. He went to bed and when Marianne Noll checked on him later, he was unresponsive.

“He was a hell of a man,’’ Gordon said last night. “He was special. He was not your typical football coach, that’s for sure.”

As stated the ONLY coach to win four Super Bowls, yet he is rarely mentioned when the greatest coaches are discussed. Probably because he was never a self promoter and shunned the spotlight.

He isn't famous for a system like Bill Walsh, he's famous for having a team with an awesome defense. And he didn't exactly put those teams together by himself.

He's in the Hall of Fame, that should be enough. But no, he doesn't belong in the discussion among guys like Joe Gibbs, Landry, Walsh, Parcells...guys who either built innovative new systems, won with different guys, or both.

Lol, what a dumbass you are. The defensive system he designed was the primary reason they won those super bowls. The NFL changed the rules because of that defense that allowed Walsh to open up more offense.

Jesus Levi. By all accounts they weren't talking about him as a coach as much as a person. Don't take a dump on the grave of someone that everyone apparently than you was universally liked as a coach and father. Everyone loved the guy.

I don't know if he made every pick, but he was in charge. He picked Joe Greene with his first ever draft pick, and it legendary how the team wanted to pick Stallworth, but Noll said, no pick Swann and get Stallworth later in the draft.

John, what the fuck are you talking about? The OP asked why Noll isn't regarded as one of the top few coaches ever, and I gave an answer. Am I supposed to change my opinion on that because he just died?

I'm sure he was a lovely old man, but that isn't the topic at hand.

Bill Bellicheat hasn't won a Super Bowl in about a decade... when his defense went away.

Jimmy Johnson went to Miami, couldn't win shit.

Don Shula, won in the 70s, couldn't win shit with Marino.

The one guy I can think of to win with different players was Joe Gibbs. And as good as he was, I don't hear him talked about with Landr, Lombardi and Shula. Maybe because he won in both strike years.

So there really is no correlation between winning without your core guys and being known as one of the best.

No joke, that's my genuine feeling. As Barry Switzer proved, any coach can win a Super Bowl with Troy Aikman.

Try doing it with Joe Theisman, Mark Rypien, and Doug Williams.

And as good as he was, I don't hear him talked about with Landr, Lombardi and Shula.

And that's an absolute crime. Joe is usually mentioned in the top 10, but that's not good enough. Only one other single coach has even won a super bowl with TWO different QBs. And Joe did it with fucking THREE, not a single hall of famer among them.

Even when he came back - far past his prime and with an awful roster - Gibbs managed to take the Redskins to the playoffs twice in four years - still the best coaching record of any coach under one of the worst owners in NFL history, Dan Snyder.

And yet Gibbs doesn't get near the respect he deserves as the best coach in NFL history.

When Joe Gibbs dies, I'm gonna post something to that effect. And then someone will disagree - as is wont to happen in ANY discussion about sports history amongst sports fans.

True - they weren't scrubs. Doesn't change the fact that winning SBs with three different QBs is a one-of-a-kind accomplishment. Doesn't change the fact that Doug Williams' career was basically over by 1987, but Joe Gibbs saw something special in him.

I'd say their very similar. Both had good defenses, ran the ball to set up the deep ball and won.

And neither one left their imprint on the game like Lombardi, Landry or Paul Brown. And that's the problem.
