What's The Pinnacle Of Sports?

Getting excited about hoops and wondering what you think is at the top of the sports world.

March Madness?
Super Bowl?
World Series?
World Cup?
Stanley Cup?
The Masters?

I wish there was a poll option here but alas, $tevie doesn't have it together. So what do you think?

For me it's the divisional round in the NFL playoffs. I love that weekend.

Popularity wise it is the summer Olympics and football world cup.

Personally, NHL playoffs is the pinnacle of the sporting calendar for me.

You think so? I'd guess that the winter Olympics would be bigger. Certainly more interesting for me.

The last 20 games of the NBA season. The Western Conference is a bloodbath and you have to win nearly 50 games JUST to make it to the post-season.

I'll go with the Super Bowl but the Stanley Cup Playoffs, not necessarily the Finals themselves, are tough to beat.

The answer is going to be your favorite sport for everyone.

My favorite is the World Series and playoffs, and the College World Series in Omaha. Although I gotta say I dig the fuck out of watching the Premier League championships ( I'm not even sure of the correct name ) and World Cup. I hung out with some guys from England a while back that got me into watching it with them.

I'm going right off the board here but my favorite sporting event to watch is the World Snooker Championship from The Crucible in Sheffield.

Not really. While some may get excited for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, from an overall perspective, I don't think it can touch The Super Bowl...which I think may be the top event.

March Madness second, maybe? Everyone has a school they can identify with. I'm not a soccer fan but you'd have to put the World Cup up there because of the global appeal.

Personally, I prefer the college football national championship but it's not the top event.

Naked Racquetball

Where do you think the name came from?

Coming from a New Zealand perspective with this, but Acknowledging the Rugby and Cricket World cups are far behind the football World Cup.

Biggest event? Summer Olympics

Biggest and most popular single sport event? Football World Cup.

Biggest annual game? Super Bowl. Not that it's much more than a curiosity for most here, but it's hard to deny the scale of the thing.

Other events with a mystique to them: The Masters, Wimbledon, pre scandal Tour de France. Formula One title (Monaco Grand Prix within that), Indy 500 (see Super Bowl).

For me it's probably the Superbowl these days, although I love seeing New Zealand win at the Olympics, and the football World Cup is the only true world championship in team sports.

It used to be the Heavyweight championship of the world but those days are long gone.

Yeah. I thought about adding that, but then realised that it hasn't meant shit to most people since maybe Lennox Lewis (and that's being generous).

NHL playoffs for me too. Ice hockey is the greatest game on earth! Even if people disagree they can't argue that it's not the fastest because it is! Players skate up to 30 mph!

When I was a kid, I would've said the Stanley Cup playoffs. But I haven't watched hockey in years.

So I guess I'll go with the Super Bowl.

I would guess the most watched event in the United States would be the Superbowl, but it probably doesn't compare to the World cup on an international level.

I like this answer, even if I don't like the teams it's produced a lot of great moments.

Going for the gold. Miracle on Ice 1980 as a kid will always be etched.

17 years ago today my order from that list would have gone like this
Super Bowl - NFL RULES!!!!! 'murica #1!!!!!!
March Madness - There is just something about the drama of watching a coach see his financial future waving on whether or not a freshman makes this next free throw.
Stanley Cup Playoffs - Great action and effort for 2 months
World Series - Strategy, tension and lots and lots of home runs
The Masters - A tradition like no other. Whiteness in all it's glory.
World Cup - Fucking kickball tournament that looks like cross-country hockey played without sticks

June of '98, I fell in love with proper football. For me now it would be this order
World Cup - All-star games that actually mean something
MLS Cup Playoffs - Footy Mundo is alive and well in the US of A
UEFA Champions League knockout stage - Usually the best teams on the planet
World Series - Expanded playoffs add more to the post-season tension
March Madness - The "one and done" players have changed college basketball
Stanley Cup Playoffs - still great
Super Bowl - Only a 4 month long season . . . 5 months if your team makes the Super Bowl
NBA Playoffs - Since my Sixers have sucked, I don't care about the NBA post-season
The Masters - lost me years ago

Im going to take an interesting take on the question, and rather than simply say what I think is the greatest sport, I would like to share a great sports "moment".

83 NC State Wofpack: Survive and Advance. There's been a great 30 for 30 about how things looked so bleak for JimmY V and the pack. Until things were no longer, bleak. Now, Im a UNC fan, but you really gotta respect State, and the championship game fas the final crescendo that makes it almost seem pre-determined. Except, unlike pro wrestling, their wins were NOT predetermined (unless you count divine intervention.

Evem oif you aren't a huge bball fan, you'll be pretty nuts about how great it is at the end (all throughout, really) And there are other links on youtube, but ultimately chose the "official" youtube link, so if you don't like ads, I am sure there are a ton of copies without ads. Or get adblock or something maybe.

I just watched that 30 For 30 a few weeks ago. Good stuff.

But I think I'll piggyback on this idea and start a new thread for the question you posed.
