Greatest Sports Moment?

So Woosh turned the tables in the "Pentacle Of Sports" thread and tossed in the question of the greatest sports moment. Good idea for a separate thread and I'll let him toss in his suggestion.

I'm honestly going to have to give this one some thought.

This is interesting for a topic. Your personal moment? There are quite a few, I'm from SF so recently ( even years have been awesome ), anytime the Yankees lose, or LAD misses another pennant, etc. Dick Sherman's tears in the Superbowl....

I think the universal or most important moment in American sports was when Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier which started civil rights.

Jesse Owens winning Olympic gold or Jim Thorpe's dominance.

On a related note, I would buy an audiobook of Vin Scully telling Jackie Robinson stories...

For me personally there are a few.

Dave Roberts steal in the 2004 ALCS.
Larry Bird coming back from the dead in the playoffs against the Pacers in 91.
Bird stealing the ball on the inbound pass against the Pistons.

I'll keep it to things I got to see as they happened:

-1980 US Hockey Team
-Douglas KOs Tyson
-Kirk Gibson's home run off Eck
-Ohio State over Miami

As for all of history, I think Owens and Robinson would be up there.

Said it before, I'll say it again: survive and advance. 83 NC State championship team.

Miracle on ice..........Cant be beat.

88 World Series - Kirk Gibson Home Run game 1 = best moment in history. Orel Hershiser shut out going the distance in game two then the WP in game 5.

------------------------------------------------------------

49ers 28 Cowboys 21
Joe Montana led his team to an 89-yard game winning touchdown drive connecting to Dwight Clark in a play known as The Catch...

Super Bowl V, X, and XIII. Jackie Smith - The sickest man in America!

Totally forgot about Montana. My favorite 49er moment was Superbowl XXIII, with Montana connecting to Taylor with like seconds left to beat the Bengals.

I was talking to some Boston friends after the Hawks loss and they were going off about how Brady is now the GOAT QB. Nope.

I like Brady, but it took him 6 SBs, a bunch of picks, and tow losses to a Manning....a fucking MANNING to accomplish what Montana did in four ( with no interceptions ). Get the fuck outta here.

As for my personal favorite, Mavericks vs Warriors. 2007 Western Conference Playoffs. The crowd at Golden State stood the entire second half and left Steve Kerr in awe. Eight years later and he's got that team on the cusp of greatness.

Personal favourites focussing on NZ.

Grant Elliot hoisting a six off the second to last delivery against South Africa to put the Black Caps into the 2015 Cricket World Cup final.

Jonah Lomu steam-rolling Mike Catt in the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

New Zealand winning the America's Cup in 1995.

Again, it's subjective but what if Montana:
1. Played in two more SB's? Who is to say he wouldn't have had "a bunch of picks"? Not sure 4 picks in 6 games is "a bunch" but, whatever.
2. Played in the salary cap and free agent era? He didn't make it to
any SB's after '89.
3. Hadn't gone one and done four times including three in a row? 4-7 record when not making it to the SB.
Greatest or not, Brady IS in the conversation.

Well one of mine has to be winning the rugby world cup in 2003 against Australia in their own back yard!

Brady, 4 SB wins and 6 Conference Championships
Montana, 4 SB wins and 4 Conference championships.

There are ways to argue Montana is better, but the "He never lost a Super Bowl" line doesn't work.

I would take Elway or Marino over either one of them.

For me it has to be Walter Payton passing Jim Brown, and the Bears winning the superbowl.

Back then I hadn't experienced 'winning' as a sports fan. Then the Bulls happened, and between those titles, and the recent Blackhawks titles, I'm still riding their coattails.

Come on Cubs...
