Larry Bird was way better than I thought

I was a bit too young to really remember anything except old slow Bird from 91-92, and hearing him being talked about so highly on sports radio made me hit the youtubes searching for highlights.

What. The. Fuck.

Bird's highlights are ridiculous. His passing alone is GOAT level and he isn't known for that at all. Hustle, rebounding, clutch, etc. I've always heard he was a great shooter, but after watching this shit that's just part of his greatness.

No wonder he's on the Rushmore of NBA greats. Could he play well today? I'd say he'd be just as killer. Pure basketball talent and he doesn't need uber athletic ability to clown everyone else. You still don't see many 6'9" players with his skills and feel for the game. Sliders all maxed on a custom player except athleticism.

No wonder he's Larry God Damn Legend.

Just think, his last 2 seasons in the league he was ridden with back injuries leading to an early retirement.

The best thing Larry Bird is that he was among the all time best trash talkers in the NBA.

He played so hard he's nearly a cripple now. He still insists on sitting in the stands with the fans at Pacer games. His back is so messed it takes him 10 minutes to make it to his seat. He's completely out of breath when he gets there.

Sure he had Mchale, Parrish, Johnson, Ainge and Walton (for a year, but what a year). Bird was a beast of a shooter, great with the ball away from the basket, a matchup nightmare for other teams as he could play 4 positions. And was criminally underrated defensively.

He made a lot of opponents look bad.

They've been running an '86 Celtics doc on the local CSN for the last year or so and it's awesome.
Went to a few games in those Bird years when I was still a basketball fan and I knew I was watching history.

hated the C's during those years. it was a given that team would hardly ever lose at home and Bird was going
to "Kill" you at the most crucial moment of the game. he was money. a 3 for him was like a layup.
Bird could also rebound the ball well. a lot of his defensive rebounds were quickly turned into fast breaks for the C's

just hated that guy. hated him and his UGLY AF

Why'd you hate the Celtics?

F Boston. F all things Boston in terms of sports. Hate the Red Sux. Hated the C's. Could care less now because I don't
follow the NBA like I used to.

I hate all things Boston, but you end up watching those teams almost the most because of the "hate". Those Celtic teams I hated but so much fun too see.

I hate Brady with a passion but end up watching most of his games

This I just don't understand. He's an awesome player. I'd kill for the Bears to have half a Brady.

I remember getting into organized basketball as a kid in like 1977 and then Bird and the 80s Celtics came along and I was all in. Everything Bird did was amazing but for me, his passing was insane.

Here is good video on not only why Laimbeer is a dick but why you didn't want to actually piss Bird off during a game. I mean, if trying to get him out of the game with an injury was your gameplan, then you better come through or this happens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jBWiol12SA

Of course, two years later... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtBSIni2P6Q

You fuckers got me all caught up in Youtube land!

Found this: What someone calls the 10 best NBA Fights, and over half involved the Celtics. The last one is unbelievable. Barkley has Bird in a headlock while Dr J punches Bird in the face. :D

best footage is the Dr J vs Bird fight? i remember that footage as if it was yesterday.
Tommy Heinson sure did make his feelings known about the fight. and he mispronounced melee haha

Heisohn is one of the best homer announcers because he's so wrong on so much of the English language. He's basketball Yogi Berra.

John
I recall hearing Tommy broadcast a lot of NBA games on CBS. I think they had a game of the week and
I want to see it was on a weekend? But you might have better info on that subject.
Of course the C's were on a lot and so were the Lakers. Then the Bulls and Pistons were the hot TV draw.
Anyway, Tommy was a big time homer and he didn't care. Cool footage to watch. I bet
NBA TV airs these games from time to time

I barely give a shit about basketball and even I got sucked in LAMF. It's weird, I had a phase in early highschool, meaning 10-12 years old when I was athletic but not into beer yet, and I was tall for my age, and everybody told me to check out the team. Of course, in Germany, you wanna play soccer first, but there were big names in the early 90s like Detlef Schrempf's early Seattle times made Basketball super famour here, along with Pippen/Jordan.

Anyway, now I wish I'd been around Larry Bird and Bill Laimbeer. Maybe I would have chosen differently.

Fuckin' Bird. Unreal

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_0g0FhSlWs

When Magic said "they'll never be another Larry Bird", he was right. Sounds like hyperbole, but truth.

The game has changed, and after watching all this shit on youtube and seeing Golden State chuck 3's everywhere 2 nights ago, the game has changed for the worse. The 80's/90's were epic!
