They had both been flirting with each other since the beginning. James just triggered something with that remark is all. She was participating in it with him to that point.

Exactly, they had this banter going on and the rape comment struck a nerve. He did apologize and it seems as though he's got some other problems in addition to his sex addiction. They mentioned that he was kicked out of school at 9 and it shows as far as his maturity level.
