Star Trek (2009)
8/10
I'm an admitted sci-fi geek, but Mrs. SB isn't so much. So to get ready for watching the new ST movie, we had a mini-trekathon... watched original series episode "Space Seed" (which introduced Khan), Wrath of Khan, and Search for Spock. I figured that would give her enough awareness of the characters to get the new film a little better.
I went into ST'09 not having a bias about rebooting the franchise. I'm glad I did it that way, 'cause I really enjoyed it. Tons of nerd callouts to the original series and films, but you could still enjoy it without knowing all that. The actors filling the roles were all great choices, it really felt like young versions of the characters. Nero is not the greatest villain of all time, but he works for the story... and the story is just fine. It's the most modern, hi-speed fun Trek film ever made, so I can see how it would appeal to a larger audience. Lots of good laughs throughout, surprisingly one of the funniest to me is the first time Nero greets the captain of the Enterprise.
Mrs. SB really liked it, she commented it was her favorite by far of what we watched over the past couple days. She completely understood what was going on, but to be fair she had just sat through 5+ hours of old Trek beforehand. We both agreed it wiped the floor with the Star Wars prequels... very sad for me to say that, as SW used to be my entire world. If Lucas could have made a new film with half the heart/dialogue/fun of ST'09, I'd be much happier.
Lucky for me, the geek party is over, and now I have to hold up my end of the bargain for having Mrs. SB watch all this... next up is Funny Girl and Funny Lady back-to-back. As they say on Vulcan, "live long and Streisand."

Schmucks sucked! Had such great potential... but very few real funny moments.
"The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans" with Nicholas Cage was surprisingly very very good! Nicholas' best role in many years.
the new 'Rush' documentary was super good.
"The White Ribbon" - german film that won some awards at Cannes an Sundance a few years back... it was ok - watchable, but nothing special.
"The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans" with Nicholas Cage was surprisingly very very good! Nicholas' best role in many years.
the new 'Rush' documentary was super good.

The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser - 6.9/10. I wanted to like it more than I did, because I loved Bruno S. in Stroszek and I tend to love most of Herzog's movies. It's not bad, I just wasn't as invested in it as I hoped I'd be.

Completely agree on these two. Cage is at his off-the-rocker finest in that movie.wolf_blotzer wrote:"The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans" with Nicholas Cage was surprisingly very very good! Nicholas' best role in many years.

She's Out of My League - My wife hates the dumb comedies that I usually like. She liked this. I did not. I feel they used a clever rouse to cover up the fact that it's a romantic comedy rather than a gross out comedy farce.

Yes! Loved that movie. Bad Lieutenant and KickAss are the two best movies I've seen in the past year.wolf_blotzer wrote: "The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans" with Nicholas Cage was surprisingly very very good! Nicholas' best role in many years.
The scene where Cage talks the old ladies oxygen is freaking hilarious. When that door closes and he's standing behind it shaving? LOL.
I watched most of Pretty In Pink on TV last night. It's still a great movie IMO. 9/10

"Deep In The Valley" - 3/10
Lots of hot bitches and a decent premise, but for some retarded reason they tried to make it funny with the unfunniest actors I've ever seen and it's unbearable.
"Hot Rod" - 6/10
Danny McBride rocks, but sometimes it's just too nerdy and formulaic.

Kick-Ass - 6/10. I'm sorry, but it wasn't as could as it should have been for how built up it was. Even the soundtrack was predictable. McLovin was really weak.

Yeah, I was just all around disappointed. The girl was really good, but nowhere near good enough to carry it.IDIAMINDADA wrote:That movie has the weakest last reel in history...seriously, the end of that movie should have been so bad ass, and was completely weak sauce....without Hit Girl and Big Daddy that movie is DTV material at best.Bridget wrote:Kick-Ass - 6/10. Kick-Ass--7/10 I dug it. I never read the comic, so I couldn't say if it was true to it or not. Hit-Girl was awesome, and I thought the over the top violence was funny.
Youth in Revolt--3/10 Unfunny and lame. There were a couple of mildly funny bits, but Michael Cera just grates on my nerves.
The Tooth Fairy--6/10 My little girl is 9 and she wanted us to watch it as a family movie. All-in-all it was fine for a goofy kid's flick. There were a few snappy lines of dialogue, and the Rock seems to fit those kind of roles well.
Serpico--8/10 The movie itself it just okay, but goddamn was Pacino awesome in this. You can almost feel his anxiety as he gets into deeper and deeper shit. He should have picked up an Oscar for this.

7/10 Hot tub Time Machine
--The innacuracies bothered me because some should have been thought out better. The nerd in me caught:
- Poison were unknowns in 1986. They didn't hit big until Spring Break 1987. Why not use someone like say...Ratt instead? They were big in 1986 and affordable to portray in flick.
-- Sweet Child o Mine ia also mentioned,it wasn't popular until summer of 1988.
-- Rambo 3 did not exist in 1986. Poster is in room.
-- New Miller Lite cans used. Fuck you'd think they could get a dozen cans from the era off of ebay.
-- The film is in 1986,so when he goes back to form "Motley Crue" ...hmm...They already existed and Home Sweet Home was a hit in 1985.

The Born Losers--5/10 The first Billy Jack movie. It's pure stupid cheese, but I had never seen it so I had to. The main plot of the flick is that this motorcycle gang is raping all over the town, and it's up to Billy Jack to put a stop to it. Somehow this was rated PG, as well.

The Other Guys - 6/10. Not as stupid as I thought it would be (I had reallllly low expectations), but not great. And Mark Wahlberg didn't even take off his shirt, so.

We have my girlfriend's nephew for the weekend... Went out to see Sorcerer's Apprentice tonight.
7/10 - Fun flick, cool special effects, decent story. Better than I expected b/c it's not the type of movie I would pick.

Great movie. I remember all the hype about Daniel Day Lewis' performance when it came out...but he really fucking owned this role especially in the last 30 mins or so.

Best Seller (1987) starring Brian Dennehy and James Woods. James Woods plays a hitman who goes to a famous author, who is also a cop, to have his life story written, and to give up his crime boss. James Woods always comes off as like-able and cool. 7.5/10

Good grief, where to begin?? Lots of smut and hot bitches, but I could just watch porn if that's all I wanted. The 2 out of 10 is only because of the amount of nudity. I want my 85 minutes back.
