I watched it last week. I'm a huge Carolla fan and really wanted to love it, but it kinda fell flat for me. Lots of memorable nods to the stuff he talks about on his podcast, but I was just having a hard time buying him as an actor.johnk5150 wrote:Road Hard - 4/5
Not for everyone. Great job telling story of how miserable constant travel is.
I liked him better in The Hammer.

The November Man - 7/10. Decent flick. Pretty uninteresting dialogue, no Bond quips that I can remember. Decent plot, Olga Kurylenko (former Bond girl) looks fantastic. Worth a watch if you're a fan of Brosnan.

We Are the Best: Love seeing punk rock kids. Really sweet movie that filled me with youthful excitement whenever they'd pick up their instruments and make noise.

Focus - Will Smith as a con-man. Better in the previews, but not horrible. 5/10.

Seven Psychopaths (2012) - 6/10. Dark comedy with Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken, Colin Farrell and a bunch of other bitches. People seem to compare it to Tarantino a lot but I don't really see it other than there's lots of far-fetched murder and sassy dialogue. Tom Waits has a cool cameo, though. And Abbie Cornish is briefly super hot in it.

I've had this on my DVR for months but haven't gotten around to watching it yet. I'm having a hard time committing to watching movies these days.SebastianLeeDanzig wrote:Seven Psychopaths (2012) - 6/10. Jennifer 8 - Netflix streaming.
A blind Uma Therman is picked as the next victim as a serial killer because she is believed to be a witness.
Andy Garcia plays the serial killer obsessed cop that stops at nothing to catch his man.
Lance Henrikson plays the grizzled old cop that is loved by everyone.
John Malkovich does a great job as a total prick IA guy.
It was decent, a little slow.

Birdman. 7.5/10. A good movie, nothing more/nothing less. Keaton and Norton were great. Galifinakis was good too, wish him and Norton had more scenes.

8.5/10
This is in limited release currently, not sure if it's going wide or not. A pretty solid riff on John Carpenter's whole style, including the synthesizer soundtrack.

Love Always, Carolyn (2011) - 8/10.
Cool documentary about Carolyn Cassady (widow of Neal Cassady a.k.a. Dean Moriarty) and her kids and how they deal with the legacy of On The Road and the whole misty-eyed Beat Generation cult. Spoiler: she's bitter as fuck, which strangely makes for a great little film.
Even made me order the book with her side of the story, Off the Road: Twenty Years with Cassady, Kerouac and Ginsberg.

Re: Rate the last movie you saw
I've hardly seen any of the movies that have come out in the last 20 years, but I heard a lot of good things about Whiplash so I watched it and thought it was very good. Probably 8 out of 10.
After hearing Fletcher's explanation for his behavior at the Jazz Club I kind of felt for him and I believe what he told the kid. At first maybe it was a trap to get the kid to show up so he could embarrass him (which worked). However, when the kid tore off the solo Fletcher went from saying he was going to "gouge his fucking eyes out" to being won over by his great performance. That shows that he really was just pushing those kids to be the absolute best they could be, albeit a bit harshly. Great movie.

Dumb and Dumber To. 4/10.
I thought the previews had a few OK moments but didn't realize that those were pretty much the best parts. Horribly forced jokes. Luckily I rented it with a free redbox promo and watched it with my 11 y.o stepdaughter so considering the circumstances, it was ok. If I paid to see this in a theater I would have been super pissed.

Birdman: 6/10
I liked bits and pieces of this, but this wasn't the best picture of the year.
Keaton and Norton were good (has Norton ever been bad in anything?), and Stone also has her moments.
I also liked how they went for the single shot effect (which I haven't seen since Silent House... if anybody even remembers that movie) but just thought the story wasn't as good as some of the other movies I saw last year.
Gone Girl was way better. I even thought Planet of the Apes and to a certain extent Nightcrawler made for more compelling movie making.
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones: 3/10
Added nothing new to the series. I think they shot the proverbial load in 3 with mounting the camera on the fan.
Jessabelle: 3/10
Another less than mediocre horror movie.
