Please, can someone brief the president on the unemployment rate?

"When you look for a job, you can’t find it and you give up, you are now considered statistically employed. But I don’t consider those people employed.”
— President Trump, remarks to CEO town hall, April 4, 2017

The president made these comments as he described the method of calculating the unemployment rate as “ridiculous.” Since no one at the White House, apparently, has explained to the president how the unemployment rate is calculated, here’s a quick and easy briefing.

Spoiler alert: It’s exactly the opposite of what Trump said.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is part of the Labor Department, details the process at length on its website.

The data that makes up the unemployment rate comes from a monthly sample of 60,000 households, or about 110,000 people, from 800 geographic areas across the country. Each household is interviewed for four months, so each month about one-quarter of the households are changed. Census Bureau employees interview the households to determine whether people ages 16 and over have jobs, are seeking jobs or are out of the labor force.

Here are the basic concepts used by the BLS:

• People with jobs are employed.

• People who are jobless, looking for a job and available for work are unemployed.

• The labor force is made up of the employed and the unemployed.

• People who are neither employed nor unemployed are not in the labor force.

In other words, a person working some period during the week is considered employed. A person who was laid off and is seeking a new job is unemployed. And a person who is a stay-at-home parent or retired is not in the labor force.

Trump thus has it entirely backward. If you can’t find a job and have given up looking for work, you are considered not in the labor force. You are not considered “statistically employed.” However, within the “not in labor force” category, you would be listed as wanting a job but either discouraged or marginally attached to the workforce. You are considered unemployed only if you are actively looking for a job.

Donald Trump Kicks Off Sexual Assault Awareness Month By Defending Bill O’Reilly
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/don ... 7d347635f9

President Donald Trump said he doesn’t think Fox News host Bill O’Reilly, who has been accused of sexual harassment by several women, did anything wrong.

In an interview with The New York Times on Wednesday, Trump defended O’Reilly after the Times reported that O’Reilly or Fox News paid five women a total of about $13 million to settle claims of sexual harassment or inappropriate behavior over the years.

“I think he’s a person I know well — he is a good person,” Trump said on Wednesday.

“I think he shouldn’t have settled; personally, I think he shouldn’t have settled,” Trump added. “Because you should have taken it all the way. I don’t think Bill did anything wrong.”

“It’s very sad. Because he’s a very good person. I’ve always found him to be just a very, very good person. And by the way, a very, very talented person. Look what he’s done. So I feel very badly,” Trump told NBC.

I know! But then this is the guy who said Jeffrey Epstein was a"Terrific guy", while even acknowledging that Epstein liked 'em young. When you are an asshole about women, other men who are assholes about women look fine to you.

It's become a routine thing for the news to report something Trump says or claims and add the familiar notation of "citing no evidence". Damn near everything that plops out of his yapper.

But of course it's fake news. Is there evidence? No. But somehow it's still fake news.

Just assume everything Trump does or says is bullshit. It's so simple and so accurate a meter. Ooh, Donald gave $78,333, the first part of his salary, to the National Park Services! What an honorable guy! How about paying for the $18 million those personal trips to Florida are costing America through this weekend? Fuck you and your 78 grand, Donald!

Donald Trump Jr. talks about running for governor of New York
http://pagesix.com/2017/04/05/donald-tr ... -new-york/

Donald Trump Jr. wants to run for political office, telling members of an elite gun club that he could set his sights on becoming governor of New York.

Don Jr. spoke to members of the F6 Labs gun club in Hicksville, NY, and, when asked about his political ambitions, said he would love to follow his father, President Donald Trump, into office.

A guest at Tuesday’s meeting told Page Six, “Don Jr. said he is interested in running for office, such as governor of New York, but the position of mayor of New York would be less interesting to him.”

Don Jr. added that he didn’t want to be one of 100 Senators, nor a member of Congress.

Campaigning alongside his father made him think about his future, with him saying, “Do I want to be behind the scenes and be a mouthpiece and fight back against crazy liberal media? Maybe.” Don Jr. joked that he missed the intensity of the presidential campaign: “Going back to doing deals is boring after 18 months. The politics bug bit me.”

"The politics bug bit me.” Translation: There's insane money to be made in politics.

This guy sounds like he's looking to get into politics for some kind of excitement. Fight the media, business deals are boring, yada yada. Expected talking points with no mention of helping anybody. Truly his father's son.

Translation: I have no interest in being mayor of NYC because I'd get my ass handed to me. My father exploited rural areas and was elected President so my best chance is to do the same thing in the state of New York.

Tax Reform is DEAD!
http://www.businessinsider.com/tax-refo ... ump-2017-4
We have seen this movie before. President wants bill, president doesn't learn details of bill, president tells members of Congress they had better vote for bill or else, president says he never cared about stupid bill anyway, president demands Congress still act like it might pass bill, and so on.

This movie doesn't end with the enactment of fundamental tax reform. It ends with the president watching cable news and tweeting bitterly.

Yeah, that's a speed of light 180 degree head snap. I do hope that the gassing of the civilians actually really affected the POTUS. That would be a positive. How this shakes out, I do not know, and I'm not sure this was the right response. But wow.

If so, they're not going to be buddies anymore since Putin and Co. supplied Assad with those weapons, or at least turned a blind eye to Assad, didn't he?

At least people won't be talking about his domestic failures for a while. The hypocrisy is staggering, though. When 200 civilians were killed by US airstrikes in recent weeks, that didn't bother the righteous president. It wasn't a war crime of course. It didn't cause public outrage, barely made the news. Even better, now that he admits the Assad regime is attacking its own citizens, what's the rationale of rejecting Syrian refugees and letting them die in your war?

Good point.

My first thought, an obvious one that I didn't come up with, is that Trump desperately needs to boost his approval ratings. Wars do that. It's a very old political trick. One, I honestly don't believe that someone who has spent his whole life not caring about others suddenly developed a conscience overnight. Two, the interest and heat on the Russia scandal is never going away. *Ever*. Nothing else that comes up or gets introduced as a distraction will ever take eyes away from that subject permanently. So the first thing everyone needs to remind themselves of is the idea that Trump doesn't give a shit about Syria or Syrians. This is about something *else* for him and his administration. Then once that's established we can start to get at the *what* of it.

Trump has spent his whole life playing games with people that were within his control. I think with politics, he's finally playing a game that's too smart for him to win.

Uh no. Every military strike doesn't constitute "at war with." Especially when it mostly constitutes damaging the taxiway of the air field where the chemical weapon laden Syrian aircraft took off from the other day.
