The Appalachian Trail just wow..........

Post by tym »

So I decided to go down another rabbit hole, and wanted to know what that was all about. Holy shit that is beyond some hard core fucking hiking. If you were to walk it from start to finish, and yes, every year some do. Its about 8 months and they say about 10 grand give or take to do it.

I just finished "when you find my body". A lady got lost walking the trail, kept a diary, and a dude took stuff from her diary, along with what so many did to try to find the woman and told the whole story. She just made so many mistakes, as do allot of others. Fear just takes over and people do stupid shit when lost. Happens all the time. They pay for it with there life.

In the end, it took two years to finally come across her remains. She was only 800 yards from the trail. She never took any wilderness survival classes, if she had, she would of made it out alive. She just missed so many simple things . Made so many mistakes Like waking uphill to try and find a cell phone signal instead of walking down hill to help herself. Crossed a stream and didnt follow the flow down the mountain. They figure she walked 10 miles only end up 800 yards from the trail. She simply broke rule number one, when lost. STOP and try and stay where you are. Easier to find. She stopped in a wooded area and search planes couldn't see her.

Really was a great read. Had no clue people could walk such a short distance from a trail, get turned around, and never get found alive. Fear, it just makes people do things that make no sense. Being lost and afraid really does some fucked up things to a persons mind. Every year, people walk this trail, and some people get lost. They say there is a 98 percent chance they will be found in 24 hours. Amazing read.
I'm finding it difficult to masturbate to this. I'm trying, I just have so little to work with...

My daughter did the Appalachian trail in 2012. It didn't cost even close to 10k for her to do it. Started the last week of February just north of Atlanta and finished August 9th in Maine.
She sent out packages beforehand to various places along the trail, who actually accept and hold for thru hikers. Shoelaces, socks, batteries, snacks, compass, and other items. There are also residents who look out for the thru hikers, supplying Gatorade and water, occasionally cooking meals for them.
She also hooked up with a group of 4 other hikers 4 days in and no one ever got lost or strayed from the trail.
Common sense is a must if someone is going to attempt the trek.

Well, he was smart enough to not leave his trailer and go someplace which required "common sense" to remain alive.

Had not heard of this book until your post. I’m now about a quarter of the water through it.There is a lot of AT videos on YouTube I’ve been watching recently. Obviously, it takes a ton of prep, planning and fitness to pull off.

I thru hiked the AT in 2017. It was the most wonderful and brutal endeavor I will ever experience in this lifetime.

From hiking the last 500 miles with a torn rotator cuff, to finishing my morning instant coffee and finding a slugs at the bottom of the cup never a dull moment!

The kindness of people to hikers definitely gave me some faith back in humanity.
I started March 27 and finished September 25.

A man from where I live is hiking the AT again to try and reclaim his record of oldest person to hike the Appalachian Trail ,he is 90 years old!!

Wow! That's awesome!
I hope you aren't permanently damaged from that trip. A torn rotator cuff is no joke!
I love hiking, but I don't like camping. I hike a few hours, then go home to a jacuzzi bath and a soft bed.
But I really admire people who do stuff like that.

On the West Coast we have the Pacific Crest Trail ('PCT') from Mexico to Canada, another epic thru hike.

I know a guy who did it, we met him at the Onion Valley campground above Independence to resupply/party with him. Another guy I know went with him for the Oregon/Washington portion but dropped out (it's BRUTAL, and the guy had a crazy pace, like 20 miles a day or something)

Navigation skillz are super important, read up on how to do it old school with a compass and topo map. It's saved me more than once!
It's good to be bad
It's the best time you'll ever have
What the hell is this ultra sad
Pray for your cool and work on that ass!
