When you retire: Your last day of work

What’s going to happen?
I am going to retire in about 3 years, so I’ve actually been giving it some thought.
Of course everyone is going to say I’m going to say FU to my boss, but in reality, you’re probably not really going to do that.
I have my own business, but I also work for a huge national company, so I’m am eligible to retire after 25 years. (I have 32 in)
Anyway, this is how I see my last day.
Not one person at my work means anything to me. Some are nice to talk to, and mess around with at work, but I can live without them.
I can retire online, so there is actually no need to inform anybody of what’s happening. My supervisor works during the day, and I work at night, so I haven’t seen him in over a decade, so no need to tell him.
I am going to walk in, punch in, do my job, punch out, and walk out the door, and never return.
Pretty simple for a long ass post.

and we give them the best years literally of our lives. I have worked the same job for 35 years. I worked here for 5 years, quit when I was young, cashed in my retirement. A year later my new job was failing and I needed one. I was the only licensed operator in our town that could do my job with the credentials at the time. I was hired back for 3 dollars on the hour more. Here you can retire at 27 years. I hit that mark last year this time. I forecasted out my retirement (KRS) and it wont make any sense to go past 3 more years unless I get a big enough raise to move the retirement mark further. I could retire and come back as a temp but I dunno. To be honest with you, this is really all I know. Of course I write, record and play music but was never able to do it full time. I have done that too my whole life. About 5 years ago i started writing a book about my time here and all the people (characters) that I have worked with all these years. Many are now deceased. I have funny stories and sad stories. I also have every day stories. I did leave out the torrid affairs that happen here as does everywhere but that's all. I am up to around 320 pages of stories and photos. I plan on mass company emailing it out when I am finished and retiring. It's not a "FU" book. Its just history.

3 years to go. Aside from the necessary administrative tasks I need to attend to with Benefits, I have no interest in happy hours, goodbyes, or that nonsense. I get along well with my coworkers, but I don't want to socialize with them outside of work. When I left the place I worked at for 27 years, from college graduation until 2015, I gradually emptied my office. On the last day, I walked out without a word to anyone, like leaving a normal day. That is my retirement plan. I can ship my laptop back or drop it off at tech support on the last day.

Worked the same dead end job for 22 years. Had a side hustle flipping tickets including a covert ticket office right on site. Then they sold the small family owned business to a corporation / consolidator. They brought in rules, which were basically almost a foreign concept. Anyone who worked for a small business knows that often as long as you show up, do your job and not vomit on the equipment (a rare firing) you can get away with anything.

I smiled, helped with the transition, made an early decision to quit. Gave my notice and they actually asked me to stay longer (something the previous owners would never do) to help finish out a very complicated transition (basically merging our system with theirs). Doubled down on the side hustle which actually surpassed wages the previous year. Then walked out of there with a new desk and stereo receiver used just for hold music they let me keep. Never told anyone what I was doing, never applied for another job. Someone did call me a few weeks later to ask a question and hint strongly they wanted me back. Asked me what I was up and just chuckled and said just chillin and waiting for the next thing to come along.

Which was basically the opposite of what everyone expected. People would joke I would be there for ever and that they would never fire me because I would come back and shoot everyone. Which is funny because I was marginally competent, was so depressed to be non-functional for years at a time (which I somehow snapped out of) and scared to death of moving on to something else.

That's my "retirement" story. The ticket thing kinda fizzled and got a lot harder so I am pretty much just pretending to be retired.

A couple weeks ago the owner called me up and said the company was out of money but they hoped to have it rectified within a month, but they couldnt pay me. I said ok, i'l hold on (and not work).
The following week, all my accounts just stopped working. been hard getting HR or anyone on the phone.

I woudnt say im retired. but maybe I am, since i'm never gonna work an 9-5 again.

So that's was the exciting way my W-2 income life ended.

I've still got +10 years to go so I'm not even thinking about this subject, baring a lottery win, but I like my job as I'm actually helping people rather than just selling sprockets.

These are great posts so far! I’ve also been working the same job forever but it’s a small business. Once the owner retires, it’s probably over. No idea where I will go next.

As someone mentioned, yes….we give them the best years of our lives, so I’m careful to not grow too old! Make sure I’m still healthy and able so I don’t look like a broken down car when I go out looking for a new job!

So for me, I think it will end peacefully. No blaze of glory. No big celebration. I’ll just ride off quietly into the sunset.

I'm fortunate to have a career that aligns perfectly with my personal interests. It's my hobby and my life, I love my work. Most of my waking hours are spent completely immersed in it. I have no plans to ever retire, there is no end in sight, I'll be working until the day I die.

That would be a fun career, however, I am not good enough to rock climb for a living. Outside of my professional life, the passion has been in high altitude mountaineering (which involves rock and ice climbing) and it's something that I frequent regularly to find a new perspective and recharge.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, my profession is in a rather nerdy domain: a physicist specializing in nanoscale phenomena, with focus spanning disparate fields, including quantum phenomenon, condensed matter, nanophotonics/integrated photonics, sensors/actuators, MEMS/NEMS, to name a few of the active areas. I am genuinely most grateful that collectively over the years some of the works have been commercially successful.

I actually enjoy working and staying busy. Yes, I could also get a hobby, but it wouldn't be the same.
Work provides a good dose of accomplishment in life.
So, as long as they'll have me, I'll keep working.

As for me, I'm on track to retire when I'm 50. Although I need to work out a plan for after retirement. If I don't have one, I could work a bit longer. As TravisBicklesMohawk said, work does give you a sense of accomplishment. I have yet to find a hobby that gives me that same sense of accomplishment.

As for my last day, well I'm mostly working from home these days. And most people I liked in the office have either left or are also working from home. I'd imagine there will be some sadness and reflection when I hand it my notice. But also relief that I finally made it to FU money.

Unfortunately, I do physical labor.
At 59, it’s already getting hard to climb up on 3 story roofs for ac repairs, paint all day in the heat of AZ.
I’m hoping I can do it for 2 1/2 more yrs to get a meager ss check.
All about decisions made earlier in life.
