Concussion 7/10
Low score because the film was severely miscast. No reason for Will Smith to play Dr. Omalu. I'm sure his lighter
skin had a lot to do with that choice. Will Smith had a terrible accent in the film. That only helped take away
from his performance.
In conclusion, EFF the NFL and Goodell for not accepting that the NFL is failing at protecting their players.

"The Accountant" - 7.5/10
Good movie. Better than some critics are saying. This is kind of Affleck's Bourne, if Jason Bourne were also an accountant.

Cheap Thrills (2013) - 6/10:
Indy-ish movie about two losers hanging out at a bar and getting baited by a millionaire couple to do dares for cash. Not bad, but predictable as fuck.
Bad Timing (1980) - 8/10:
Somebody recommended this here as one of their favorite movies and I was surprised how good it was. Art Garfunkel and Theresa Russell didn't really strike me as serious leads, but this totally works.
The Grump (2014) - 5/10:
Finnish comedic drama about a backward old fuck who's a burden to his son's family, but then everything gets all heart-warming and gay.
Tough Guys Don't Dance (1987) - 7/10:
I had just read the Norman Mailer (who also directed this himself) book and found out about the movie. Actually, it's better than the book, which I didn't really like all that much. The movie is a mess, but it's awesome in a 80s trash way. Everybody is overacting so blatantly, it almost feels like scenes from a Lynch movie. Somehow, they also got Isabella Rossellini for this.

And while I'm here anyway, I'll just paste what I put in the documentary thread, because it's awesome:
Mali Blues (2016) - 10/10:
One of the most enjoyable films I've seen in recent years. It's a documentary about the music scene in Mali and how this wave of radical Islamism threatens the musicians of different ethnicities all over the country. You learn a lot about their ancient musical culture (Mali is actually where many modern instruments come from, including the banjo) and the land itself is beautiful. The documentary mainly follows four displaced musicians with some success abroad:
- Fatoumata Diawara (a singer/songwriter who's also hot as hell)
- Ahmed Ag Kaedi (a Touareg desert blues e-guitarist)
- Bassékou Kouyaté (a Ngoni (proto-banjo) virtuoso who uses distortion and stuff)
- Master Soumy (well, a rapper)
Even if you're not particularly interested in the different types of music, this is really eye-opening concerning how Islamic terrorism affects normal Muslim people and artists in their home countries, and how they're looking for ways to fight back and educate.

I literally laughed out loud at that. Just as you laughed throwing a Jew in the oven! So we can relate, humor-wise.

By the Sea (2015) - 7/10:
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as an estranged American in a hotel room on Malta in the 70s, where they speak French for some reason. Everybody's all jaded and depressed and nothing happens whatsoever. Mélanie Laurent looks like shit with bangs. I have no idea why I liked this, but I really did.
Cosmopolis (2012) - 3/10:
Cronenberg adaptation of a Don DeLillo novel I haven't read. So far so good. Robert Pattinson is the star and the whole thing takes place in a limousine and everything sucks. I didn't get it. Bummer.
A Perfect Man (2015) - 7/10:
French movie, played-out plot: writer steals manuscript, becomes big star, is blackmailed with truth, goes nuts and fucks shit up. Main dude is great, though, and Ana Girardot is hot.
Aloft (2014) - 4/10:
Jennifer Connelly and Mélanie Laurent in one movie sounds pretty cool, but I was bored to death. I honestly can't recall what the hell was the matter with all the characters, except for general deep-seated childhood drama. There probably was good reasons for everything.

"Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" - 4/10
Man, what a disappointment. I really liked the first one in spite of the changes from the (great) book. Zwick made a Reacher movie whereas Christopher McQuarrie *crafted* a Reacher movie, and I think that's the difference. I could see why they picked this book in the series, which is decent but not great, because it offers some emotional layers. But honestly, much like with "Batman vs. Superman," you need to wait a few movies before you begin to toss in those elements. One movie in is not enough lead-in for establishing some of the deeper aspects this story presents.
I felt that the two main female leads, including Cobie Smulders, were miscast, the action isn't very good and the bad guys were weak. And Cruise's character was insufficiently realized this time versus in the first one. A misstep for Cruise in his comeback phase. It's hard to believe this is the same director that once made the magnificent "Glory."

7/10. Even a cookie cutter Guy Ritchie movie is still a good movie. It would have worked better as a Lupin III film.

Yawn.
It seems like it was made just so they could create sequels.
Disappointed to see Samuel Jackson in a role like this.

Through a Glass Darkly (1961) - 7/10:
Another Bergmann classic, which wasn't so entertaining on the surface, and I'm not sure I get all the usual religious symbolism, but still worth it for the incest. So much sweet, sweet incest.
Palindromes (2004) - 8/10:
I'm a total Todd Solondz fan by now. He never made a movie that wasn't great. This one's up there, I just rate it 8 to leave some room on the scale for when he makes a perfect one. And Dollhouse was still better. This is even sort of a sequel with a bunch of recurring characters and lots of references.
I Shot Andy Warhol (1996) - 7/10:
I'm a fan of both Valerie Solanas, the radical feminazi (where the word actually fits for once) who wrote the Scum manifesto, and Lili Taylor who plays her here. The movie itself is not really good on its own, but if you have an interest in the true story, it's pretty cool.
St. Vincent (2014) - 7/10:
Bill Murray is playing the lovable old grumpy veteran who's got a hard lot in life, Naomi Watts is the Soviet hooker with a heart of gold, then there's a divorce child entering their world and changing everybody's outlook on life. Sounds like the most revolting piece of uninspired Hollywood shit of all time, but it works because the people involved are awesome.
