I rememeber watching this film when I was about 10 and I didn't care for it then. I figured I would give it another chance as an adult. Especially as I really like dystopian films.

Visually it is impressive and gives off a great dystopian vibe. And Roy Batty is a great villain who has some classic lines. Ford does a decent job as Deckard, and the acting overall is stellar.

But the film is kind of boring and slow.

Also, why do they only get one Blade Runner to catch 4 of the replicants? Especially as they are stronger and more agile? And why doesn't the creator have any security considering he knows he will be visited by Roy Batty!

I really wanted to like this film, and watched with an open mind, but it just doesn't do it for me.

Did you watch the version with narration or without narration? The Final Cut and Director's Cut versions don't have narration. The version with narration is available on all pre-DVD home video versions as well as a bonus feature on the 4 disc special edition DVD and Blu-Ray.

Despite the trendy modern re-evaluation of Blade Runner as a better film without narration, the version with narration is the one that is responsible for the cult status it achieved to be re-evaluated in the first place. The popularity of the International Theatrical Cut (which was available on VHS, shown on cable, and released letterboxed by Criterion Collection in 1987) was what made Warner Bros allow Ridley Scott to make his Director's Cut without the narration.

The version with narration is a better film because it explains the complicated future world to which the viewer is being exposed, as well as sets the 1940s noir atmosphere that allows that viewer to suspend disbelief over the acts of the characters. There are a ton of philosophical questions posed by the film, and you can't engage those questions if you don't know what the fuck is going on and why Character X is looking for frozen eyes.

The version I watched the other day had no narration. But it does sound a lot better. I'll check it out with narration another time for sure.

I can't recall the first time I watched, but my favourite film back then was probably Aladin or TopGun so it probably wouldn't have made a difference!

Yeah, you can get the 4 disc Collector's Edition on DVD for like $10 used. I'd give it some time and then watch the narrated version in that set. It really is among the 100 greatest films ever made and easily in the Top 5 science fiction films ever made.

Anyone who enjoyed the deeper psychological themes in Blade Runner should check out the Westworld series on HBO, post haste. It's not perfect, but really, really good.

A Dangerous Method (2011) - 5/10:
Not a typical Cronenberg, and not very entertaining to me. It's a story about Freud and Jung, mostly over the latter's treatment of a hysterical patient, played by Keira Knightley, who got a lot of shit for it, although I think she's pretty good. Vincent Cassel is wasted, just like this premise.

Cloverfield (2008) - 7/10:
I don't know why, Sci-Fi creature shit sound super annoying to me, but I liked this. I blame Lizzy Caplan.

The Magnificent Eleven (2012) - 4/10:
I'm being generous even. Without Irvine Welsh as a writer, nobody would ever watch this. It's kinda a shitty Soccer themed version of The Magnificent Seven, only that it has nothing to do with the original. It's got a couple funny lines and soccer and drinking, so it's not unbearable, it's just not good in any way.

Lady Chatterley (2006) - 6/10:
Million hours long French adaptation of D.H. Lawrence. It's certainly better than the soft pornos, and the actors are great, but it just drags on and on and nothing happens and the ending could have come at any point in time. Marina Hands isn't even that naked in it.

Yeah, I've been watching that. I felt like it was kind of just alright until about the 6th episode. Then it started getting really interesting.

Picnic at Hanging Rock is a beautifully shot film but boring as FUCK.

Virgin Suicides isn't the most dynamic film either but I guess I like the Todd Rundgren tune.

Picnic bored you? That movie tripped me out when I was 5. So eerie. Saw it again in my mid-20's in a film class and I had the same feeling. Just a mind fuck film.

Hell Or High Water

7/10. This movie is actually rated higher on IMDB, but I thought it was just another typical bank robber movie with all the clichés, but still decent and entertaining enough. Great cast : Jeff Bridges(not his best role), Chris Pine and Ben Foster were great as the brothers, and Gil Birmingham did a great job as well.

Man Bites Dog / C'est arrivé près de chez vous (1992) - 9/10:
First time I watched this without dubbing (even the English subtitles seem not very good), hands down the best "found footage" movie ever. Benoît Poelvoorde is absolutely brilliant in this role. This mixes humor with shocking brutality on a level only rivaled by Michael Haneke. It's like a black comedy version of Gaspar Noé. I didn't remember this being so awesome.

The Remains of the Day (1993) - 7/10:
Pretty decent way to cover the WWII subject from the view of a bunch of Empire servants. Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson can act.

My Night at Maud's / Ma nuit chez Maud (1969) - 7/10:
Pretty nice, but seems quite overrated to me. I even liked the dialogue (this movie is nothing but), but there's only so much you can get out of fucking discussing Blaise Pascal. Françoise Fabian is strangely hot in it.

Stargate (1994) - 6/10:
I think I found it ridiculous when it came out, when I was actually totally into Sci-Fi/fantasy type stuff. Now I kind of enjoyed it in all its trashy 90s glory. I'd never bother with the franchise, but the premise is not even that terrible and it's refreshing to see the sand niggers not portrayed as savages and terrorists. Ah, the good old days.

The Thing
The Empire Strikes Back
2001: A Space Odyssey

Sci-Fi films as a general rule are bad to mediocre, so it takes a high bar to name them as good films worthy of discussion and praise. Nobody is going to be talking about Gravity, The Martian, and Interstellar a decade down the road.

Empire is one of my favourite films of all time. And The Thing is a Sci-Fi/Horror classic. I somehow have not got around to watching 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris. I mean, I only watched Shawshank Redemption for the first time two months ago!

And I have to admit, I did like Interstellar quite a bit.

I'll tell you right now, Solaris and (to a lesser extent) 2001 are difficult movies for most people to enjoy. If you thought Blade Runner was even remotely slow, then Solaris will be a chore for you to get through. But I think you will like Blade Runner (with narration) and I think you'll probably like 2001 as well. One of my old English professors always said "appreciation is progression", meaning that you can't go from reading a Jughead comic to reading Fyodor Dostoevsky. Film is the same way. There are films I tried to watch 15 years ago which bored me to tears, that I've watched later and loved. Experience, knowledge and maturity can open your mind up to more difficult and complex works.

I hated 2001 when I first saw it. I thought it was boring as fuck.

Now I think it's great. Not my favorite Kubrick by a longshot but it's pretty fantastic. Just visually, it's pretty mindblowing.
