Fuck New Jersey and their jughandle turns and asshole full-service-only gas attendants.
I would so pay extra for someone else to pump my gas.
Yes, I fully agree with you! It would be idea if all states had attendants to pump gas and I love Jersey for that. Unfortunately, Oregon, the only other state that had this privilege, did away with it recently.
On the topic of culture shocks while visiting other states, the eastern side of the Cascades is quite interesting. I often visit the pacific northwest for hiking/mountaineering adventures and the drive down 97, while offering stunning scenery, has some interesting areas. One peculiar sight in Crescent OR stands out: a home adorned with numerous tacky signs. Check out this google street view link to see for yourself https://www.google.com/maps/@43.4530691 ... It's not that, I understand the convenience aspect - when you open the door to get out, they yell at you like they're the cops and you're about to rob the place. You're also at the mercy of their efforts (or lack thereof). That's been my experience anyway. FWIW, gas prices in Jersey are actually pretty decent.

Fuck off! I do enjoy the "novelty" of pumping my own gas every now and again though
I have some time off soon so I'm road tripping from home in NJ to Charleston, WV > Blue Ridge, GA > Savannah, GA > Great Dismal Swamp, VA > NJ. I'll follow up.

I remember full service gas stations back in the day.
What I don't remember, was opening the door to get out. They weren't convivence stores back then, just gas stations.

I love the PNW. My BFF lived in Oregon for many years and I've been many times.
I've been to Seattle only once a couple of years ago, but it was fantastic! I've love to go back when it's not February. The ideal time would be August or September, when it's unbearable in The Valley.
I went to Lynchburg Virginia once on a business trip a few years back.
I laughed my ass off at the Christmas redneck accents in the animatronic dolls.
I walked a few blocks over from my hotel. I saw a pawn shop that sold guitars. Since I play, I bought a 12 string acoustic for a pretty good price.
But walking down the street after I got out of there was like stepping back into 1974.
Everybody was wearing very old and dirty clothes and had hairstyles like 1865.
I would say Hello as I passed by and they'd give me the 'We know by your clothes that you're not from here' stink eye like it was still the Civil War going on.
I went to rent a car the next day. I was told no problem. They called me back an hour later and asked 'Where ya'll from again?'
I told them NJ and they replied 'We're sorry, but we're gonna have to reneg on that rent deal. We don't have any cars left'.
It was a very weird experience. I don't think I'd go back there again.
