Currently halfway thru "It" the tv adaptation from Stephen King.

Supposedly getting a big screen makeover soon.

It Follows - 7/10

Just got home from seeing this...

Set in the suburbs of Detroit, a chick has a sexual encounter with a guy only to find out she's just had a sinister "follower" passed on to her that only she can see. I wasn't sure what to expect going into it, but it has an unsettling feeling throughout. She spends the movie running from the follower and trying to pass it on to someone else. Lots of eerie vibes and creepy music and sounds. There's also a good amount full frontal nudity (bonus). I love horror movies and I'm pretty picky when it comes to them. This one mostly kept my attention but it also dragged at times. It was different, so I give it props for that.

Moon In The Gutter (1983)- 8/10 Fantastic Jean-Jacques Beineix film starring Gerard Depardieu in a surrealist depiction of the port city of Marseilles (or Houston, or Shanghai, or Dover, etc) and his romantic intrigue with very naked Nastassja Kinski and Victoria Abril. The Women of The 1980s are the best. Every director in the 80s stole from Beineix even though they never admit it.

Ticket To Heaven (1981)- 6/10 a Canadian film about religious cults starring the very underrated Nick Mancuso as well as future stars Kim Cattrall, Saul Rubinek, and Meg Foster as the Big Bitch Cult Leader. It's supposed to be based on The Moonies, although they seem to have dropped these practices after the early 1980s.

The Hobbit - 6/10. Don't really remember Lord of the Rings well enough to compare, but this was about the same, I guess. Don't give a fuck about CGI quality, as if I understood shit about that, or "being true" to a children's book, but the characters were for the most part a bit less gay and annoying.

I re-watched Savages again last night. Perhaps I was drunk/stoned when I saw it the first time about a week ago and foolishly raved about how good it was. It really, really, sucked. WTF was I thinking?

And don't even get me started on the ending . . . We should all avoid any film narrated by Blake Lively. She has another one coming out April 24, so head's up!

And on that note, something good . . .

Furious 7 - 9/10 Always had a weakness for these films. They've always been consistently good for that particular genre. This one doesn't disappoint . . . lots of explosions, kick-ass fights, including a nasty cat fight between dyke Michelle Rodriguez and some Russian cow. Very good and fans of these films will freakin' love this one.

Sidebar:

When I went to see It Follows last night, there was a line waiting to get into the theater for Furious 7. Meanwhile I was literally the only person in the theater for It Follows. I think that's the only time I've ever had the entire theater to my self for a movie.

They used to show that on Showtime when I was a young teen. I haven't seen it in years and I imagine it looks pretty dated now, but I enjoyed it then. I still remember the part where the one character goes undercover in the cult and gets pulled out by another guy (private eye maybe) who explains how they were being fed a low protein diet to be more susceptible to the cults brainwashing.

Yeah the guy who pulls him out is part of the deprogramming team hired by his family.

There's another really good movie about cults (which almost seems like an American remake of Ticket To Heaven) that came out a year after called Split Image. It stars the kid from Caddyshack, Peter Fonda as the cult leader, and James Woods as the deprogrammer. I've never seen it on TV and it's only been released on VHS, even though it was high budget and was directed by the same guy who did Rambo.

Digging up the Marrow: 8.5/10

I thought it was a lot of fun. The monsters looked great; it was a cool story. Maybe the reflexive nature of the film will annoy some but I like Adam Green, like his movies, thought it was great.

China Girl 9/10 Abel Ferrara's Romeo and Juliet story between an Italian-American boy and a Chinese-American girl. About as bloody as you've come to expect from Ferrara, but there's also an amazingly tender love story in this film. Great movie and glad to see it hasn't aged badly at all since the first time I saw it.

Bird man ...it wasn't terrible. Really like Keaton and Norton together. Emma Stone can stop showing up in everything anytime soon and I wouldn't be mad.

Prolly 90% of Whiplash. I bet I enjoyed it more as a musician than anyone with no training. Those poor people prolly think Simmons was just a dick. My mother was a classical piano teacher and there were millions of times Id come into the house while she was playing and if she made the slightest mistake shed yell "NO"! To herself. I wonder if it's possible to be great at something and not be like that.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. 4/10

The most recent installment of the PA franchise expands to a chicano apartment building where a young man and his friends start exploring the murder scene of the "witch" downstairs. They uncover a basement where rituals have been performed and take a souvenir black magic book with them. After performing one of the rituals, they start to experience the type of stuff we saw in the previous installments. Main character starts to exhibit strange behavior and inhuman powers. Turns out he was marked before birth to be part of the "coven" of witches that we started to see in PA4. This one sort of came full circle with the original PA at the very end but still left too many questions unanswered. Overall left me feeling unsatisfied.

Mother Krause's Journey to Happiness (1929) - 9/10. Classic silent movie about proletarian life in Weimar Republic era Berlin, conceived as a tribute to the work and life of legendary painter/caricaturist/photographer Heinrich Zille. This is invaluable shit if you're remotely interested in that time in history and/or vintage cinema.

Buttnoid, check that out if you have a chance!

The Postman (1997) - 5/10. I actually like Waterworld so I thought I'd give this a chance too, but it's definitely the worse of Kevin Costner's flopped post-apocalyptic epics.
